Neighbors commenting on a shooting that killed a 9-month-old baby this weekend call the suspects “cowards” and police call the crime “insane.”
During a home breakin Saturday night, 9-month-old Kendarius Edwards was killed and the women who locked themselves inside a bathroom were injured, one critically, reports WSB TV. Police said the gunmen hunted them down before opening fire.
According to police, the baby was shot three to four times at point-blank range, says WGCL TV.
The shooting was part of a violent home invasion that put three women into the hospital, including the boy's mother and grandmother. Police suspect the attack was retaliation for the murder of Alexis Malone, 19. Investigators also suspect Malone's friend, Kayla Dixon is somehow involved in her murder and have issued a warrant for her arrest, the TV station says.
“It’s complicated,” said DeKalb Police Chief Cedric Alexander. “It’s insane. It’s insane.”
“Masked gunman came into the home. The three women took the baby, ran upstairs, tried to lock themselves in the upstairs bathroom. The gunmen kicked the door open and commenced firing,” Alexander said.
The victims’ names were not released. The women are 36, 23, and 21, police said. The 21-year-old is thought to have been the baby’s mother.
Detectives said at least five weekend shootings were connected. But the fight that started the crimes happened with a murder on May 3 when Michael Phillips, 29, was shot and killed during a party.
Police arrested Kemontay Cullins, 18, in Phillips’ shooting.
Detectives said they are looking for 16-year-old Cutrez Johnson and 19-year-old Oslushla Smith in this weekend’s shooting. Both are wanted for murder and are considered armed and dangerous.
Alexander said the home invasion came about five hours after authorities got an anonymous call saying that a woman’s body could be found on Agape Way in DeKalb. That victim was Alexis Malone, 19, who police said witnessed the May 3 killing. They are also looking for another possible witness to the fatal shooting.
Police said they do not know if a drive-by shooting Saturday evening that left two men dead and three other people wounded is connected. That case happened around 7 p.m. on Shamrock Drive, south of Decatur, where a car followed another car and then occupants of the second vehicle opened fire, the TV station says.
One man and two women were also wounded in that attack.
Anyone with information in the shooting is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477). You don't have to give your name, you could be eligible for a reward.

Suspect wanted in crime spree faces judge
Posted: 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, May 13, 2014
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. — One of the men arrested in a series of deadly shootings in DeKalb County faced a judge for the first time Tuesday for his part in the alleged crime spree.
Among the victims in the deadly shootings is a 9-month-old baby boy.
The series of incidents started at the beginning of May with a deadly shooting at a house party.
Three men are in custody for that incident. Police said those men, and a woman, then killed a witness to that shooting.
Investigators think the baby's murder was retaliation for those first two shootings.
Police said whoever killed the child is still on the loose.
Right now there is a concentrated effort from multiple law enforcement agencies to find the men who shot and killed 9-month-old Kendarius Edwards.
Detectives are pouring through evidence and hoping someone will call with the tip they need.
Channel 2's Ryan Young was in court Tuesday afternoon as one of the suspects, 18-year-old Kemontay Cullins faced a judge. Cullins is charged with two counts of murder in the May 10th shooting death of Alexis Malone and Michael Phillips.
Four were wanted in connection with the murders of Phillips and Malone.
Kayla Dixon turned herself into DeKalb police Monday night.
Just after midnight Tuesday, Atlanta SWAT team members pulled 19-year-old Oslushla Smith and 16-year-old Cutrez Johnson from a motel room.
Sources told Young that Johnson is at Grady Memorial Hospital getting treatment.
Police said Malone was a witness to the shooting of Phillips. Detectives said the four suspects wanted to silence her.
When she was killed, four masked shooters found the house where they believed one of the suspects lived and shot their family members, ultimately killing 9-month-old Kendarius Edwards.
Court dates have not been set for the other suspects just yet.
Grandmother's heart is broken
The grandmother of 9-month-old Kendarius Edwards is calling on the people who killed her grandson to stand up and admit they stole his life.
Erica Stephens talked to Channel 2’s Erica Byfield today and showed her here where Kendarius’ life was cut short.
Stephens said the 9-month-old died in his mother’s arms.
“My heart was just so ready to continue to be his grandmother and take him to the park, and watch him swing and say ‘Grandma, push me.’ I’m just … I’m going to miss him so much,” Stephens said.
Stephens’ son is Kendarius’ father.
Through her tears she shared her favorite stories of the boy with a bright smile.
“He just started walking,” Stephens said.
Police told Channel 2 Action News masked men with guns drawn invaded the Stone Mountain house on May 10, and killed Kendarius and shot his mother, other grandmother and a family friend.
For the first time on Tuesday Byfield saw how the shooters got in. A family member showed her the muddy foot prints on the back door. From there they we went inside.
Stephens said everyone hid in the bathroom. Investigators said it was a gruesome scene when they arrived at the home.
Stephens now wants answers. She said neither she nor her family will rest until the shooters are caught.
“They should have enough love for a baby to say, 'I did the wrong thing.'"
Police suspect the home invasion was an act of revenge for a teenage girl's death.

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. - DeKalb County Police have arrested two men they say are responsible for killing a 9-month-old baby in May.
DeKalb County Police Chief Cedric Alexander announced the arrests during a Thursday afternoon press conference at DeKalb County police headquarters.
The suspects, Marco Watson, 36, and Devin Thomas, 18, were already in the DeKalb County Jail on unrelated charges. They have both been charged with the murder of baby Kendarius Edwards. However, authorities are still investigating this situation and may be making more arrests.
Alexander said police believe Watson and Thomas were actually in the house at the time of the shooting. However, a trigger man has not been identified, at this time.
"If a body drops in this county, we will find you (those responsible), we will not tolerate this," Chief Alexander reassured citizens during the announcement.
An investigation into this situation is ongoing.
