Stuffed animals were placed in front of a West Monroe apartment by children who once played with Adeleen Forbis, 4, and Laila Forbis, 3. West Monroe police believe the girls were killed by their mother Saturday before she took her own life. / DACIA IDOM/THE NEWS-STARyan Dieck said his lifelong friend Ari Forbis is still struggling with the deaths of his daughters Adeleen and Laila.

The 3- and 4-year-olds were found dead Saturday. West Monroe police believe they were killed by their mother, Katelin Dulaney.

Dieck established an account on GoFundMe.com to help ease the financial burden for Forbis, who is just a few years removed from Louisiana Tech University and cannot afford the costs of burying his two daughters.

“You don’t plan for something like this. It’s so sudden and tragic,” Dieck said.

So far, the community has responded in a big way. Dieck’s site generated more than $22,000 in its first day.

Dieck said the fund has been helped by being spread across social media. It had more than 3,100 likes on Facebook late Monday.

“The support has been incredible. People we haven’t talked to in years donated and offered well wishes. I never thought it’d balloon like it has,” Dieck said.

Dieck said Magic Grill will give a portion of its proceeds Tuesday and Fieldhouse will donate a portion of its proceeds Thursday to Forbis.

Though the fund has received a lot of initial support, the site is still short of its $40,000 goal. Funeral plans are set to be finalized Tuesday morning.

Dieck said those close to the family are trying to understand how the tragedy happened.

The West Monroe Police Department responded to a call of an unresponsive person at about 12:40 p.m. Saturday at the Camellia Trace Apartments on Arkansas Road. Police discovered the three bodies and believe Dulaney murdered the children before taking her own life.

The bodies have been sent to Little Rock, Arkansas, for autopsies.

West Monroe Police Cpl. Jade Gabb said Dulaney left no note and police do not yet have a motive.

Gabb said police do not know whether Dulaney suffered from any mental or emotional problems, and the investigation is ongoing.

Forbis and Dulaney were never married and have been separated since soon after Laila’s birth. Dulaney had custody of the children, but Forbis visited on weekends.

Dieck said no one close to the family suspected the children were in danger.

“(Forbis) is a great guy. He loved his girls so much. We don’t know why something like this had to happen,” Dieck said. “He’s in good spirits, considering, but I know deep down he’s hurting.”
