Kansas City, MO, Police Department Tiquana Pasco, 29, was charged with child endangerment after strangers rescued her daughter, who had been left alone in a stifling hot car parked in a strip mall.
A Kansas City couple pulled a dripping wet toddler from a sweltering car, where she was strapped into the back seat with the windows rolled down a few inches. It was more than 90 degrees outside.
For their trouble, they were attacked by the baby's mother, who came out of a GameStop store in a suburban strip mall and started screaming and slapping the rescuers.
Jeremy Welch said he and his wife had just finished dinner at a Chipotle restaurant when they noticed the little girl, alone in the car. They looked around, expecting to find a parent nearby, but there was no one, he said.
"Finally, my wife said, 'The little girl can't stay in there.' She opened the car and pulled the child out," Welch told WDAF-TV. A small crowd gathered. Someone brought over a bottle of water.
The child was so drenched with sweat her top was soaked. Welch called 911.
As the couple walked back toward the restaurant and its air conditioning, the child's mother showed up.
"She's like, 'Why are you touching my child, why do you have my child?''' Welch recounted. His wife told the irate woman they had removed the girl from the hot car for her own safety, and that police were on their way.
That's when the mom started swinging, Welch said, and he stepped between his wife and the fit-throwing mother.
Jeremy Welch says he rescued a child from a steaming car in Kansas City, only to be attacked by the toddler’s mother.
Tiquana Pasco, 29, was charged Tuesday with child endangerment for abandoning her 20-month-old daughter.
As they waited inside Chipotle for the police to arrive, Welch said Pasco kept on screaming and hitting him. The little girl threw up four times during the fracas, he said.
After police officers showed up, she demanded her daughter back. Instead, she was arrested and the child was turned over to a family member.
She was booked on a charge of second-degree child endangerment, a misdemeanor.
