Prosecutor wants more investigation into girl’s death

Detroit — The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office has requested further investigation from police in a case involving a 24-year-old Detroit mother and her 33-year-old boyfriend following the death of the mother’s daughter.

Police were called to Henry Ford Hospital around 9:15 p.m. Thursday on a report a 3-year-old girl died after suffering multiple bruises. The mother brought the girl into the hospital stating she wouldn’t eat, police said. The girl died at the hospital.

“Officer arrived and discovered a 3-year-old female had suffered some extensive bruising about her chest, head and arms,” said Sgt. Michael Woody. “A significant wound was on her head.”

The mother and her boyfriend were questioned and arrested, Woody said.

According to the prosecutor’s office, as the man was placed in a squad car he tried to flee but he was captured and re-arrested.

On Monday, Prosecutor Kym Worthy charged Clifford Daniel Thomas with resisting and obstructing police.

Police have been in contact with Child Protective Services as part of its investigation.

Prosecutor: More investigation required in death of 3-year-old Detroit girl; one jailed on unrelated charge

DETROIT, MI -- A 24-year-old mother brought her daughter to Henry Ford Medical Center in Detroit about 9 p.m. Thursday.

The child appeared to have been beaten, exhibiting bruising on her head and chest, and was refusing to eat, police say the mother told doctors.

Soon after arriving, the infant took her last breath and died. Police were called to the hospital.

The investigation led to the arrests of the mother and her 33-year-old boyfriend.

Police were nearing the 72-hour deadline for jailing a suspect without charges when on Sunday the case was filed with the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office for a warrant review.

"The Wayne County Prosecutor’s has requested further investigation from the Detroit Police Department and charging decision will be made until the work is completed," the office said in a statement Monday.

It's unclear if the mother has been released from jail, because she has not been officially identified by authorities, but her boyfriend, Clifford D. Thomas, is behind bars facing a charge for resisting or obstructing police.

"On the evening of Thursday, September 18, 2014, Thomas was placed in a squad car at a location in the 1300 block of Third Street by police," the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office said in a statement Monday. "Thomas was then taken into police custody in connection with the homicide of 3-year-old girl that occurred on the same day at a location in the 16800 block of Rockdale in Detroit.

"It is alleged that while he was being placed into a squad car he attempted to flee and resist the police, but was shortly captured and re- arrested."
