JACKSONVILLE, ONSLOW COUNTY -
Jonathan and Brandi Savage, both 29 years old, were arrested Friday by the Onslow County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies say they abused their foster children, a 5 year old boy and 4 year old girl by allegedly starving them to the point of hospitalization.
We spoke with a family friend of with Ashley Perry who says she's seen first hand that the Savages foster children were well taken care of and that the couple was even considering adoption.
Perry says that Brandi Savage worked to get the foster kids while her husband Jonathan was away in Afghanistan.
The children came into the couples care in September of last year and are the biological children of Brandi's cousin according to Perry. She says the children were taken away from Brandi's cousin because they were in a bad relationship.
We asked Perry about the child abuse charge towards Jonathan that accused him of holding the 5 year old boy under water, she said that the allegation is absurd.
Perry said she spoke with Brandi on the phone Monday when she heard the news about the charges.
"They are really, really upset and they are really struggling with all of this that's going on. They're just really hoping that something will be able to be figured out and they'll be able to be reunited with their kids," said Perry.
Perry says the Savages had the two children taken away on August 25th.
The Onslow County Clerk of Courts Office says on September 29th Brandi was questioned by law enforcement on the suspicion of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Sheriff Ed Brown says the couple later turned themselves into law enforcement on October 17th.
Brandi was released ona $75,000 dollar unsecured bond that same day while Jonathan posted a $100,000 dollar secured bond and was released to the Marines.
Perry says now the couple will try and fight for their foster children.
