Stepfather pleads not guilty in beating death of 3-year-old Jeida Torres at Brooklyn shelter

Kelsey Smith, 20, is indicted Friday in Brooklyn Supreme Court in the beating death of his 3-year-old stepdaughter and the assault of her 5-year-old brother.
A Brooklyn man pleaded not guilty Friday to charges that he beat his 3-year-old stepdaughter to death.
Kelsey Smith, 20, was shackled with his hand in a cast and wearing an orange jailhouse jumpsuit as he was indicted for allegedly killing little Jeida Torres and beating her 5-year-old brother in a city shelter.
The accused child killer — who allegedly called the kids’ mom and said he “f---ed up” after the attack — didn’t say a word during the brief appearance.
His lawyer, Craig Newman, entered the not guilty plea for him.
Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Neil Firetog ordered Smith held without bail pending his next court appearance in February.

Little Jeida Torres was beaten to death.
The city Medical Examiner’s office found Jeida died from “blunt-force trauma” to the head.
Investigators said Smith, whose rap sheet includes 15 prior arrests, started pummeling the toddler for wetting her pants, and then turned his wrath on her brother Andrew for trying to help her. Family members told the Daily News the boy was covered in bruises “from head to toe.”
After the hearing, Newman said his client, who tried to commit suicide after the attack, “is doing as well as can be expected.”
