WFTV says judge doesn't want to give defense an appeal argument

Only WFTV-Channel 9 attended a scheduling conference today in the Casey Anthony case, the station's Kathi Belich boasted.

The station offered footage of Judge Stan Strickland meeting with prosecutors and Anthony's defense team.

The judge determined that the murder trial cannot begin in October, and the parties will meet in January to determine when it could start. "The Oct. 12 court date with the death penalty would virtually be an impossibility," Strickland said in WFTV's footage.

Belich cited one of the reasons for the delay: defense attorney Andrea Lyon's teaching schedule. She is a professor at DePaul University in Chicago.

WFTV analyst Bill Sheaffer said a lot of judges would say, "You cancel everything, you be ready for trial." But Sheaffer said the state system is more flexible, especially on a capital case.

"Sheaffer says Judge Strickland does not want to give the defense an appeal argument that they weren't ready when they were forced to go to trial," Belich said.

Sheaffer said he expects "dozens of motions" filed by every member of the defense team. Belich added, "Sheaffer also expects the defense to file a lot of motions against the death penalty for Caylee's killer." Yes, the veteran reporter convicted Anthony. "Accused killer" would be the way to describe Anthony.

Strickland also wants a written statement from Amy Huizenga about why she wants Anthony to stand trial on a check-forgery charge before the murder trial, Belich said.

Tony Lazzaro, Anthony's former boyfriend, just hired a lawyer to help him during Anthony's civil and criminal trials, WFTV anchor Bob Opsahl said.
