ORLANDO, Fla. -- It was one year ago on July 15, 2008, when a frantic grandmother called 911 to report her 2-year-old granddaughter missing.

Thirty-one days after last seeing her granddaughter, Cindy Anthony called 911 dispatchers to report Caylee Anthony missing. In the call, Anthony made
the infamous quote, "It smells like there was a dead body in the damn
car.
"The little girl's mother, Casey Anthony, told investigators a nanny by the name of Zenaida Gonzalez took her daughter. It is a story she stands by to this day.
A massive search unfolded from there, and thousands of volunteers scoured land across Central Florida looking for the little girl. Famous bounty hunter Leonard Padilla also made several trips to the state to organize searches for Caylee.

There are the grandparents, George and Cindy. The phantom baby sitter. The bounty hunter. The meter reader.
At the center of it all is the petite 23-year-old mother charged with killing her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee. It's been one year since the toddler was reported missing, and while her body was found six months ago, authorities still don't know exactly how she died.

It's been a year since Central Florida was introduced to the Anthony family and the saga of a missing toddler.
On July 15th, 2008, Cindy Anthony called 911(listen 1st 2nd) to report her granddaughter, Caylee, missing.
"There's something wrong," she told the dispatcher. "I found my daughter's car today, and it smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car."We soon learned that daughter was then 22-year-old Casey Anthony. Authorities arrested her the next day for child neglect in Caylee's disappearance, but Cindy and her husband, George, stood by the young mom even when investigators said she told lie after lie.

One year ago today police and the public were introduced to what would become one of the most strange and bizarre cases to rock Central Florida in years -- it's the day Caylee Marie Anthony was finally reported missing.
A frantic and sobbing Cindy Anthony made two very different 911 calls that night. First to report her daughter Casey Anthony for stealing the family car and money. About an hour later, she called deputies again -- this time frantic and panic stricken to report that her granddaughter Caylee Anthony had been stolen.
She told a dispatcher it "smelled like there's been a dead body" in the car driven by her daughter, Casey Anthony. The toddler hadn't been seen in a month.
Casey Anthony told deputies, friends and her parents that she'd dropped her brown-haired daughter off with a nanny named Zenaida Fernandez-Gonzalez in June and never saw them again. Instead of reporting Caylee Anthony missing then, she waited and partied and did her own "investigation" to find her daughter, she told deputies.
Since that day the case has twisted and turned, drawn a bizarre national following and landed Casey Anthony with a first-degree murder charge in her daughter's slaying. The nanny, who deputies believe doesn't exist, has never been found.

Stations recap strange case on first anniversary
Casey Anthony: Stations recap strange case on first anniversary
posted by halboedeker on Jul 15, 2009 12:48:42 PM
Central Florida stations today marked the first anniversary of the Casey Anthony case. It's a story that has kept many viewers watching -- and annoyed many others -- during a tumultuous time in television news.
"One year ago, the start of the case that made headlines around the world," WESH-Channel 2 anchor Scott Walker said at noon. "The case against Casey began on July 15 with a 911 call."
That call, of course, was came from Cindy Anthony, Casey's mother.
WESH's Jeff Lennox retraced how the case unfolded: A worried Cindy said, "It smells like there's been a dead body in the damn car." During the 911 call, Casey Anthony said her daughter, Caylee, had been missing 31 days. Casey said a nanny named Zenaida Gonzalez had the child -- "a story she stands by to this day," Lennox said. Casey is charged with the first-degree murder of Caylee. "Casey's trial is at least a year out," Lennox said.
WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Vanessa Echols gave a quick recap of the case's history. "No one has been able to prove the existence of that so-called nanny," she said.
WKMG-Channel 6 anchor Erick Weber said that the station would have a report at 6 p.m. It will come from Tony Pipitone -- "the very best investigative reporter around," Weber said. That tease went straight into another to an "Inside Edition" report about "the book that predicted Michael Jackson's death, the bombshells everyone's talking about."
News organizations keep turning to the Anthonys because they, like Jackson, are just so confounding.
