Clay County and Smithville police are using a helicopter to search for a missing 8-year-old boy near the lake. Authorities
said the boy, Travis Covey, reportedly left his home around lunchtime
Sunday after getting into an argument with family members.Family
members and emergency crews searched Sunday evening but could not
locate him. The boy is apparently dressed in boxer shorts and has left
his residence on other occasions. However, in those instances he either
returned home or was located by deputies, said Sheriff Bob Boydston.Authorities have set up a command center at the Jerry Litton Visitor’s Center, 16311Route DD, near Smithville Lake.

A missing 8-year-old boy has been found safe. The Clay County Sheriff's
Department has been looking for Travis Covey who walked away from his
home near Smithville Lake Sunday afternoon.

Travis Covey is four
feet tall with green eyes and short brown hair. He was last seen
wearing red boxer shorts and no shoes. He left his home around 2 or 3
in the afternoon on Sunday. The police were notified at 4 p.m.

The
boy has taken off before, but police and family became very concerned
Monday morning when he was still not home. So police stepped up the
search and began asking volunteers to help.

"He goes into the
woods. He's an adventurer," said police. "He's not restricted by time
of day, obviously clothing, or parental directives. He goes when he
wants to go. He's just a young man that we need to get back as safely
and as quickly as we can."

Volunteers met at the Litton
Information Tourist Center around 8:30 a.m. Monday, July 27, located on
County DD Hwy to help in the search. A lot of people have come forward
asking to help in the search, which is focused on a wooden area south
of the lake, about a mile from the boy's home.

The area the boy
lives in is a rural area with woods separating the boy's house from the
lake. A police helicopter is in the air, the water patrol is in the
lake, crews are on the ground on foot, ATV's and horseback searching
for the boy.
