Unidentified infant - Maricopa AZ
Maricopa police investigators said they have found a shallow grave
containing the remains of an infant in the backyard of a vacant home in
the community of Maricopa. An investigation team discovered the grave at about 11:20 a.m., according to the Maricopa Police Department."It was alleged it was a stillborn birth," said Sgt. Stephen Judd of the
Maricopa Police Department. "That's the only information we're giving
you as of right now surrounding some type of birth in the home."
The gender of the infant is not known. A medical examiner will perform an
autopsy to determine the cause of death. It will then be up to the
Pinal County Attorney's Office to decide whether to file charges. The
tip came in Thursday night, officers said. The house and property in
the 18,000 block of Madison was secured until a daylight search resumed
Friday. The Maricopa Police Department was joined by an
investigation team from the Arizona Department of Public Safety.
Investigators also brought in forensic anthropologist Dr. Laura
Fulginiti.Officers probed the ground by hand, looking for the possible remains of an infant that was buried about three to four weeks ago.The
family moved out about six weeks ago and the property was abandoned,
police said. Those family members still live in Maricopa and had access
to the home, officers said. Judd said they have become the focus of the
investigation.
