DONTE JENKINS - 2.5 months (2007) - Kansas City MO

A former Kansas City resident was arrested this morning after being
charged in connection with his infant son’s death, which happened
nearly two years ago.Dontez M. Jenkins, 27, of Springfield is
charged with two counts of first-degree assault and two counts of
first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.On Oct. 14,
2007, police were dispatched to Jenkins’ home in the 2400 block of
Chelsea Avenue and found 2½-month-old Donte Jenkins dead in his crib.Dontez
Jenkins told police that Donte’s mother put the baby to bed face-down
in the crib as she usually did. Jenkins said he woke up and checked on
Donte at 5:40 a.m. and found him unresponsive, so he called an
ambulance.In February 2008, the Jackson County medical
examiner’s office ruled Donte’s death a homicide caused by smothering
and other blunt-force injuries, according to a police report.

When police found 2½-month-old Donte Jenkins dead in his crib nearly two years ago, his injuries weren’t obvious.But
when experts examined the infant’s body they discovered 19 broken ribs,
including some fractures more than two weeks old, court documents said.
He also had a freshly broken shoulder and a bruise to the back of his
head.On Thursday, authorities arrested Donte’s father,
27-year-old Dontez M. Jenkins, in connection with the baby’s death. He
has been charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child. On Oct. 14, 2007, Jenkins called 911 from his home in the 2400 block of Chelsea Avenue.He
told police that Donte’s mother put the baby to bed facedown in the
crib the night before, as she usually did. Jenkins said he woke up at
5:40 a.m. and found Donte unresponsive.In February 2008, the Jackson County medical examiner’s office ruled Donte’s death a homicide.When
interviewed by police, Jenkins said that the baby was prone to
“screaming” a lot and that he sometimes held him to his chest and
squeezed him to make him stop, according to court documents. Jenkins
said that he squeezed hard enough to “possibly” cause the rib injuries
and that he used the method to quiet the baby three or four times
beginning when the baby was a month old.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Nearly two years after a baby was found dead, a Missouri father has been charged in connection with his son's death.

Dontez Jenkins has been charged with assault and endangering the welfare of a child. Jenkins' 2-month-old son was found dead in a bassinet in October 2007.

The medical examiner ruled the baby's death a homicide in February 2008.

Jenkins is being held on $250,000 bond.
