An autopsy shows a Valdosta teenager was buried alive. Seventeen-year-old
Brittany Wade was found buried in a yard in July. On Wednesday, her
ex-boyfriend, Jonathan Barrett, remains in jail without bond. This is Brittany Wade's bedroom. The rest of the home is filled with memories of a daughter whose life was ended too soon. "To
my surprise, little did I know that that would be the last time I would
see my daughter alive," Willie Wade, Brittany's father. He
dropped his daughter Brittany off at a Bunche Street home the night of
July 22 to visit her two children and when he came back to pick her up,
she wasn't there. Brittany was found by a neighbor the next
day partially buried in the backyard. Twenty-one-year-old Barrett was
charged with her murder. "Brittany and Jonathan were not
going together or living together or anything," said Wade. "The reason
that Brittany was over at the house was she was visiting her kids. She
was not over there to see her man." Lowndes County Coroner
Bill Watson says the blunt force trauma makes him think she was
unconscious. Dirt was found in her lungs meaning she was breathing when
she was buried. The cause of death according to a report from the state
crime lab is strangulation and asphyxiation. "There was a
restraining order on both of them," said Wade. "They were not allowed
to be within 500 feet unless they were visiting the kids at the same
time." Police say the crime was act of domestic violence. Wade says Barrett could never stay away and calls him a predator. "Domestic
violence is really about power and control so a lot of the first signs
would be someone wanting to know where you are constantly," said Karen
Argyle of The Haven. The autopsy confirms the death of
Brittany Wade was a homicide. Barrett has a bond hearing on Friday at
the Lowndes County Courthouse.

"He's the demon himself," said Cynthia Woodard, the victim's Aunt. "If he
killed her like that, if he got out in the streets, he's liable to kill
somebody else's' child."
Those are the harsh words Woodard has for Jonathan Barrett, 21, who is charged with burying her niece, Brittany Wade, 17, alive.
Barrett and Wade were a couple and have two children together.
Barrett was set to have a bond hearing Friday morning but the judge removed Barrett's case from the court call.
Since Barrett is pleading insanity the judge says he must undergo psychological evaluation.
Following the ruling, Wade's family fled the courtroom.
"This is not just an ordinary battle this is a war," said Willie Wade, the
victim's father. "So, all kinds of tactics are going to be played."
"He's not crazy. He's a long way from being crazy," Woodard added.
Wade was found buried in this shallow grave behind her boyfriend's aunt's home in the 1100 block of Bunche Drive in late July.
Brittany was there visiting her two sons.
Police say the couple had been fighting that evening.
Brittany's autopsy says her death was caused by asphyxiation. She had dirt in her lungs.
Her family believes Barrett deserves to die.
"He needs to stand up and man up on this situation and accept whatever it
is they give him, the gas chamber, death penalty, lethal injection,"
said LaSonya Wade, Brittany's cousin.
Wade's family is wearing t-shirts made in Brittany's memory.
Her photo is on the front and a poem she wrote is on the back.
But unlike the poem, this family is not ready to forgive and forget whoever is found guilty of Brittany's murder.

Seventeen-year-old Brittany Wade’s body was discovered on the afternoon of July 22, 2009. The mother of two had been partially buried in the back yard of a 1000 block Bunche Street residence.

Within hours of her body being discovered, police arrested the reported father of her two children.

Jonathan Barrett was charged with murder in Wade’s death.

UPDATE: Barrett’s June 7 trial date was continued to the September trial cycle, according to the Southern District Attorney’s office.

VALDOSTA — Mr. Willie James Wade of Valdosta entered this life on July 9, 1957, to Alma Wade and the late Wllie Henry Wade.

He attended Valdosta School System. He was a member of St. Peter AME Church.

He departed his earthly life on Sunday, September 12, 2010, at South Georgia Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Brittany Wade.

He leaves to enjoy life his mother, Alma Wade; brother, Albert (Audrey) Wade; four sisters, Alma Wade, Connie Smith, Marilyn (Leon) White and Cynthia Woodard; four grandchildren, Jonathan, Jamanon, Zicorra and Cory; two stepchildren, Michael Foster and Evette Foster; four aunts and four uncles; a very special friend, Margaret Foster; two godbrothers, Jeffery Perry and Terry Lane; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral service will be held Saturday, September 18, at 3 p.m. at St. Peter AME Church. Rev. James Wright, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in St. Mary Cemetery. — Scott and Roberts Mortuary.

The family of Brittany Wade, a teen murder victim who was found buried in a shallow grave in late July of 2009, finally feel they have closure.

Jonathan Barrett, 21, was sentenced to 30 years for murder, 10 of which will be on probation.

He's convicted of killing 17-year-old Brittany Wade in July 2009.

She was his ex-girlfriend at the time.

She was found buried in a shallow grave behind Barrett's Aunt's home on Bunche Drive in Valdosta.

Cynthia Woodard, victim's aunt, says, "I feel like justice has been served and I am happy. Thank you Jesus. He deserved more than that but what he got I'm satisfied with. Thank you Lord."

Wade and Barrett had two children together.

Wade's family continues fighting for custody but the children have been taken by the state to Savannah where they have been adopted by another family.
