ROBERT FLYNN - 15 yo -(2009) Hubbard Township OH
The couple walked into
Girard Municipal Court Thursday so she could answer to a charge of
tampering with evidence in connection with the Aug. 10 shooting death
of a 15-year-old Masury boy.
Paul Sundy Jr. and Karen Adams were led out
of court in handcuffs and taken to jail. Ms. Adams, 29, is charged with
one count of felonious murder, three counts of felonious assault and a
count of tampering with evidence. Sundy, 40, is charged with felony
counts of tampering with evidence and obstruction of justice. They live
at 1628 Stateline Road in Hubbard Township across the street from the
Hermitage border at Ohio Street west of Wheatland.
They were indicted Thursday afternoon by a
Trumbull County grand jury, Hubbard Township police Det. Michael Begeot
said, adding they will be jailed until arraignment this morning before
Trumbull County Common Pleas Court Judge Andrew Logan, who can set or
deny bail.
“It’s not been an easy row to hoe,” Begeot said. “It’s a tragic case all around.”
He wouldn’t elaborate on the grand jury’s
findings — which were handed down in secret — aside from detailing the
charges and stressing the investigation into what led to Robert Flynn’s
death is far from over.
“There’s a possibility there could be additional charges and additional suspects,” Begeot said.
Robert was shot outside the Stateline Road
home early that Monday after a confrontation between Ms. Adams and
Sundy and four young men in a car, according to police and 911 call
transcripts. He died at St. Elizabeth Health Center that night.
Mahoning County Coroner David Kennedy found that Robert died from a
gunshot to the head and ruled the death a homicide.
A 911 call from the car at 2:39 a.m.
reported the shooting, which happened after the caller said he tried to
call a female friend — presumably Sundy’s teenaged daughter — and Sundy
“was talking s--- on me saying he was going to beat my a-- and
everything,” according to the transcript released by Trumbull County
911.
“We just went up to go settle things out and everything,” the call continues.
At 2:42 a.m. Ms. Adams called 911 to report
“a car full of kids calling and threatening us all night. They came up
here shooting a cap gun, all over dating a 16-year-old girl,” according
to a transcript of the call.
“They were shooting. I don’t know what they
were shooting at the house. I don’t know what it was,” Ms. Adams said,
adding that her family had been harassed “for hours and hours and
hours.”
The dispatcher mentioned the first call to Ms. Adams reporting that Flynn had been shot.
They were shooting something at the house
and we have a little gun, we just shot back to scare them off. Oh my
God,” Ms. Adams told the dispatcher.
Ms. Adams said she shot a “.22 varmint rifle” in the air.
“There’s no way in hell I hit the kid. I
shot from the third story window up and they had something that went
pop-pop-pop. I thought it was an airgun or something. It didn’t sound
like a ‘gun’ gun,” Ms. Adams told the dispatcher.
Brookfield Police found Robert bleeding in the back
seat of a car with a gunshot wound to the head in a lot on U.S. Route
62 near the Pennsylvania border.

A million dollars, that was the bond set by a Trumbull County judge for
a woman accused of killing a 15 year old, until a bond hearing late
Friday morning.
Karen Adams' bond is now set at $100,000.00.
She was arraigned Friday morning along with her boyfriend Paul Sundy.
Sundy was held on $10,000.00, both are expected to post bond.
Both
were arrested on secret indictments Thursday. Adams is charged with
murder, assault and tampering with evidence. Plus, Sundy faces charges
of tampering with evidence and obstructing justice.
Police say
Adams fired a shot at four boys when they came to her Hubbard Township
home last week. Investigators believe one of the bullets hit and
killed 15-year-old Robert Flynn.

Re: ROBERT FLYNN - 15 yo -(2009) Hubbard Township OH
“He’s the third,” a still-shaken 17-year-old Devin Dorogy said of Robert Flynn’s tragic death.
Devin spoke Thursday, pacing outside Girard
Municipal Court waiting for court proceedings for the couple accused in
15-year-old Robert’s Aug. 20 shooting death.
Devin and other kids in Brookfield are
still reeling from the deaths of Alessa N. “Le Le” Norris, 17, in a car
crash Jan. 18 on U.S. Route 62 near Bedford Road and Margaret “Maggie”
Marmion, 17, who was killed May 26, 2008, after an accident on Longview
Road in Shenango Township.
“He was my best friend’s brother,” Devin said of Robert. “He was pretty much like my little brother.”
Robert, who lived on Ohio Street on the
West Hill above Sharon, was to be a freshman at Brookfield High this
fall. He liked to play basketball.
“He was a good kid, he had his head on his shoulders,” Devin said.
He remembered the last time he saw Robert, about a week before he was killed.
They were playing 1-on-1 basketball and “he smashed me,” Devin said.
Robert wasn’t tall, but he was a good shooter, Devin said.
“He made like eight threes (three-point shots) in a row,” Devin said. “He called me ‘Frogger’ because of the way I shoot.”
He was also a big Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
Robert was buried with a authentic Steelers football and a LeBron James
jersey the Cleveland Cavs sent to the family, Devin said.
Devin’s mom Krista said Robert was a quiet kid who “rarely said a word” around adults.
He was one of seven children in a “very loving family,” Mrs. Dorogy said.
“Robert never started any trouble,” she said.
A friend of the family, she represented
them in court Thursday as indictments were handed down against Paul
Sundy Jr. and Karen Adams in connection with Robert’s death.
“I’m here for the family
who can’t bear to be here right now,” Mrs. Dorogy said. “It’s a sad and
tragic situation; it’s just not fair.”
Robert was “in the wrong place at the wrong time,” Mrs. Dorogy said.
“As a parent … I can’t say what I would
do,” she said of how the shooting unfolded. “But you’ve got a
15-year-old whose life is lost because of it.
“He was a good kid. It’s always the good ones … it’s always the good ones,” Mrs. Dorogy said.
“I feel bad for Karen Adams, being put in
the situation she was,” Mrs. Dorogy said. “She was, she’s living in
hell as well as everyone that’s been impacted by this situation.”
A friend of Ms. Adams and Sundy who lives
in Girard, Ohio, spoke Thursday on their behalf after watching the
couple get handcuffed and carted off to jail.
“I’m very shocked, I really am,” said Amy
Hanlon, who said Ms. Adams and Sundy were defending their home —
something that’s allowed in some cases in Ohio because of a “Castle”
law that’s been applied in some cases when people were defending
themselves on their property.
“Paul … I’m just … it’s just … I can’t imagine they could have,” she said, her voice trailing off. “They’re good people.”
Ms. Hanlon claimed Sundy and Ms. Adams were
defending themselves from “four teen-agers coming at them with baseball
bats and tire irons.”
“I think it’s unjust,” Ms. Hanlon said, adding she was ready to post any amount of bail to free her friends.

he loved ones of Robert Flynn, the 15 year old shot and killed in Hubbard Township last August, all came together Tuesday night, for a special memorial service at the Yankee Run Golf Course in Brookfield to honor his memory. Robert's mother said, they'll never forget him, but they're hoping the service will help with the grieving process.
"He has a lot of friends and family that are still very hurt over this tragedy," said Robert's mother, Kathy Gaines.
Robert's family said it doesn't seem like it's been a year already.
"It's just the way everything happened--like reliving it," said Robert's sister Andrea Leone.
A year ago Robert was shot in the head outside a home on Stateline Road in Hubbard Township. Hours after the shooting, he died from his injuries. Robert's four brothers and three sisters only have fond memories of their time with him.
"He loved to dress up the dog," said Robert's sister, Courtney Rankin.
Some family members came from as far as Florida and North Carolina for the memorial. And one of Robert's cousins even sang a song she wrote and dedicated in his memory.
At the end of the service, all of Robert's family and friends attached a special note to a balloon to send up to Robert.
"Robert was a very loved kid," said Leone. "He meant a lot of things to a lot of people."
