JAYCEE DUGARD - 11 yo (1991) - Lake Tahoe CA - Page 2 Empty Oprah Winfrey top contender for first interview with Jaycee Dugard & daughters (photos, video links)

Major media players are all vying for the first interview with kidnap victim Jaycee Lee Dugard and her two daughters, Starlite, 15, and Angel, 11.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Oprah Winfrey sent a personal letter to Jaycee, hoping to convince her to tell her harrowing and bizarre story on her show first.
Other sources report that beside Oprah, other top contenders for an interview with Jaycee and her daughters include Barbara Walters of ‘The View’ and Diane Sawyer of ‘Good Morning America.’
Jaycee was kidnapped from a South Lake Tahoe school bus stop in 1991, when she was only 11-years-old, and subsequently held captive for 18 years. Sex offender Phillip Garrido, and his wife Nancy, have pleaded not guilty to charges surrounding the case.
Garrido fathered Jaycee’s two daughters—with Jaycee giving birth to the first child in Garrido’s backyard when she was only 14-years old.
Aces Show Biz reports that a movie and book deal are likely in the works for Jaycee regarding her story.

About 500 people in the town where Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped
18 years ago are taking part in a parade celebrating her astounding
reappearance and raising money for her and her two daughters.Sunday's
parade followed the reverse route of a march held on the 10th
anniversary of Dugard's abduction from a school bus stop. Missing
person posters that volunteers handed out in the days after she
disappeared in 1991 were stacked near the start and updated with large
black circles with slashes drawn through them.Dugard had been
living in the South Lake Tahoe area with her mother, stepfather and
infant sister for less than a year when she was snatched off the
street. Her stepfather has said they moved there from Southern
California partly because they thought it would be safer.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Jaycee Lee Dugard had lived in South Lake Tahoe for less than a year before being yanked inside a car by the strangers who would hold her hostage for almost two decades. Now 29 years old, her memories of the area — the 60-foot pine trees shading her house, the chickens she kept there, her friends at school — may be fragments in her mind. But in her absence, she has loomed large in the lives of people here.
On Sunday, the wood railings of her family’s old house were wrapped in pink ribbons, a symbol of her abduction. Along Lake Tahoe Boulevard, fronting the vast lake, pink bows and balloons festooned tree trunks, telephone poles, and the clothes of about 2,000 people gathered to march in honor of her being found.
Neither Ms. Dugard nor her family members attended, though they were aware of the event, said Erika Schulte, a spokesperson for the family. But the parade was not solely for them, said Karen Gillis-Tinlin, who was principal of Jaycee’s elementary school in 1991.
“There’s a sadness that this happened here,” Ms. Gillis-Tinlin said. “It changed Tahoe forever. Some of us want to connect with that.”
Angela Gooch, 30, owns a hair salon in this town of about 30,000. She grew up here and has friends in common with Jaycee.
“We’re a small community. Not one person who grew up here doesn’t know her name,” Ms. Gooch said of Jaycee. The case “ consumed us,” she said.
In the years right after Jaycee’s abduction, said Ms. Gooch, the missing girl was still a peer, a classmate in jeopardy just out of reach. But she remained frozen in time. As her case went cold, she said, “Jaycee” became as much an idea as a person. The pink ribbons that sprouted each year on bushes, backpacks and car antennas marked the fear that “changed things forever,” said Ms. Gooch, as much as they honored the Jaycee’s memory.
“As a kid, I would go into the forest with friends and we would try to find her,” said Ms. Gooch, adding, “Over the years, even as an adult, I always thought of her when I went hiking. But she was still little, and I had grown up.”
Stephanie Russell, 29, lived two blocks from Ms. Dugard and shared a school bus from 1990-1991. For almost a year, she said over the phone from Santa Rosa, Calif., they would spend most afternoons at each other’s homes, feeding the chickens that Jaycee kept under her porch, or playing games in the trees. “She was shy, and I was shy,” Ms. Russell said.
The week before her abduction, she said, Jaycee’s parents had conferred with hers and decided to allow the girls to walk alone and “meet in the middle” between their homes. “It was a huge moment,” said Ms. Russell. “I remember the excitement of seeing her walk toward me.”
Jaycee was snatched as she climbed the hill to her bus stop in June of 1991. A convicted sex offender, Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, have been charged in the case. Jaycee was in the fifth grade, but her classmates carried her with them for years, said Ms. Gillis-Tinlin.
“They gave speeches about her at their high school graduation,” she said, “There was always that connection.”
The teenagers around town now were not born when Jaycee was taken said Duane Wallace, who ran an after school program at the time of the abduction; Jaycee attended “once or twice.” But they have heard about the girl who vanished.
“The kids around here,” said Mr. Wallace, at a football game Saturday, “never fully told their parents how much it terrified them. But I saw it change them. I saw how scared they were.”
Some of Jaycee’s classmates are raising their own children now. Most keep their daughters and sons close, said Ms. Gooch, whose daughter is 10, and use Jaycee as a cautionary tale.
The story, told repeatedly for almost two decades, includes monsters befitting a gothic fairytale. The police sketches of Nancy and Phillip Garrido — with sunken eyes and hollow cheeks — seeped into the nightmares of children here, Ms. Gooch said.
But some loathing was misplaced. Carl Probyn, Jaycee’s stepfather, became the target of communal anger and confusion as months and years passed with no end to the search.
“People were mean to her stepdad,” Ms. Gooch said. “They thought he was involved. Everyone boycotted him from everything. He used to do wallpaper jobs for people, but not after that.”
In Santa Rosa, Ms. Russell flipped through a scrapbook she had kept over the years with news clippings, fliers, wilted pink ribbons, and photographs of her with Jaycee. “I always thought of her,” she said. “It makes me sick to think that during those amazing moments, the milestones in your life, she was locked away somewhere.”
Ms. Russell added quietly, “I want to finish this book now, to end what I started when I was younger.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Since her arrest on charges that she and her husband, Phillip, raped, kidnapped and imprisoned Jaycee Dugard, Nancy Garrido’s face has been seen only twice by the public. JAYCEE DUGARD - 11 yo (1991) - Lake Tahoe CA - Page 2 06nancy1.190

Nancy Garrido, 54, and her lawyer, Gilbert Maines, at her arraignment last month on kidnapping, rape and other charges.

The first was her mug shot, taken Aug. 26, showing a graying, birdlike woman with a vacant stare. The second was two days later when Ms. Garrido wept as she was arraigned on a raft of charges in front of a bank of television cameras.
Those two images — alternately impassive and emotional — seem to suggest contradictory sides of Ms. Garrido: a nursing assistant and caretaker accused of being a witness and a willing participant in rape and other lewd acts on a child; a seemingly subservient woman who nonetheless helped keep another woman captive; and a would-be mother figure who never had a child of her own.
“The people she worked with really liked her,” said Barbara Maizie, the executive director of Contra Costa Arc, a nonprofit group where Ms. Garrido worked, helping adults with developmental disabilities. “How could it be that this other situation was happening at the same time? It’s impossible to understand.”
While public records show a history of serious drug abuse, multiple sexual attacks and a conflict-filled upbringing for Mr. Garrido, 58, there are few clues to why Ms. Garrido might have done what she is accused of. Unlike her husband, who served 11 years in prison on a rape and kidnapping conviction before Ms. Dugard was abducted in 1991, Ms. Garrido has no criminal record evident in a wide search of law enforcement databases.
In televised interviews, Ms. Garrido’s lawyer, Gilbert Maines, seemed to suggest that his client may have been under the control — emotionally or mentally — of her husband, who law enforcement officials say fathered two daughters with Ms. Dugard.
“The crux of the matter or the argument I think goes to maybe her mental condition at the time and not so much what physically happened,” Mr. Maines said, describing Ms. Garrido as lost, distraught and scared. But, he added, “I don’t know that I can argue successfully that she didn’t know what was going on.”
To those who encountered her, Ms. Garrido seemed to be a meek and sometimes disheveled woman who helped care for Mr. Garrido’s mother, who suffered from dementia. Clients of the Garridos’ printing business said Ms. Garrido usually stayed in the background even as Mr. Garrido made deliveries and ran errands.
“Someone would be in the car,” said Cheyvonne Molino, who used the Garridos’ printing service for the wrecking business she runs with her husband. “I didn’t know her name.”
Whether she was always so reserved is not clear. Ms. Garrido, 54, was born in Texas as Nancy Bocanegra, the second child of a family of five or six children, according to public record databases. As a young woman, she spent time in Colorado, where some of her siblings still live, before crossing paths with Mr. Garrido in an unlikely environment to meet a future husband: the federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kan.
Gail Powell, a spokeswoman for the Nevada Department of Public Safety, said Nancy Bocanegra was visiting an incarcerated uncle when she met Mr. Garrido, a tall, lanky and deep-eyed sex offender who was serving a 50-year sentence for the 1976 rape and kidnapping of a casino worker from South Lake Tahoe, Calif.
The two corresponded, and they married in 1981. The marriage was the first for Ms. Garrido, the second for Mr. Garrido.
It seems likely that Ms. Garrido knew all too well of her new husband’s sexual history and proclivities. In addition to his rape and kidnapping conviction, Mr. Garrido had also been arrested in a 1972 rape of a 14-year-old girl in Antioch, Calif., the Bay Area suburb near where he had grown up and where he and Ms. Garrido would settle with his mother after his release from prison in 1988.
His troubles with drugs were also well known. A psychiatric evaluation as part of his kidnapping and rape trial described Mr. Garrido as having “considerable emotional conflict” in his upbringing and said he had abused cocaine, alcohol and marijuana. He had taken daily doses of LSD from 1970 to 1974, the report said, and had become increasingly religious, something echoed in his later assertions that he could speak “the tongue of angels.”
“He went nuts,” said Manuel Garrido, Mr. Garrido’s father, who in an interview with The Daily Mail of London partly blamed his son’s drug abuse for his crimes.
After her prison wedding, Ms. Garrido apparently began working steadily in nursing and social services, Ms. Maizie said, citing Ms. Garrido’s résumé.
Eight months after Mr. Garrido was released on parole in August 1988, Ms. Garrido was certified as a nursing assistant in California, receiving classroom and clinical training, said Ken August, a spokesman for the California Department of Public Health.
But the authorities say that image of normalcy soon belied a dark and violent secret. In June 1991, the authorities say, the Garridos grabbed Ms. Dugard — a blond, blue-eyed 11-year-old — off a South Lake Tahoe street, and, according to the criminal complaint, both raped her. Ms. Dugard was then taken to the Antioch home, the authorities said, and imprisoned until her rescue last month.
In 1993, Mr. Garrido returned to prison for 38 days after an unspecified parole violation, putting Ms. Garrido in charge of the household and, the authorities say, Ms. Dugard’s captivity.
Judging from the complaint, “Mrs. Garrido was effectively watching over Jaycee during the time that Mr. Garrido was reincarcerated,” said McGregor Scott, a former United States attorney and the acting spokesman for the El Dorado County district attorney’s office, which is handling the criminal case.
In late 1993 or 1994, after Mr. Garrido’s release, Ms. Dugard gave birth to a baby girl, apparently in the Garrido home. Ms. Garrido’s training as nursing assistant has led to speculation that she may have delivered that child, though Mr. August said she was not trained to do so. But, he said, there is no record of either of Ms. Dugard’s children being born at a hospital.
Ms. Garrido starting working at Contra Costa Arc in 1994, Ms. Maizie said, and was known around the office to be “kind and caring.” In 1998, about the time Ms. Dugard’s second child was born, Ms. Garrido suddenly quit her job. “She did not give a reason,” Ms. Maizie said.
How Ms. Dugard and her children were treated is not clear. But Mr. Maines, Ms. Garrido’s lawyer, said Ms. Garrido had come to consider the life inside the house — and in the hidden backyard compound — as normal.
“What she said that I can tell you about is that there came a time when she felt like they were a family, and that she loves the girls very much and she loved Jaycee very much,” Mr. Maines said on the “Today” show on NBC. “And that seems a little strange given the circumstance. But that’s what she has said to me.”

JAYCEE DUGARD - 11 yo (1991) - Lake Tahoe CA - Page 2 Empty Report: Garrido held drug-filled orgies in backyard where Jaycee Dugard and daughters were kept

Post by tears4caylee Mon Sep 07, 2009 1:57 am

A neighbor of the sex offender accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 has come forward with a troubling story. Mike Rogers detailed strange parties and goings on in the backyard of Phillip Garrido, where the girl and her two daughters—fathered by Garrido—were held captive.
The Antioch builder told the Daily Mail that Garrido made crystal meth using household utensils and frequently invited “perverts” to his home to regale in drugs, sex and drinking. Rogers went so far as to call the Garrido home a brothel.
On one occasion, Rogers said he watched a group of men carrying crates of beer, enter the Garrido backyard. He told the Mail they lit bonfires, played music, shouted, and laughed into the early morning hours.
A disturbing detail in Rogers' story is that the men would take turns entering a tent in Garrido’s backyard. “I saw them bobbing up and down and I thought, ‘My God, there is something sexual going on in there,’” recounted Rogers.
He claims to have peeked through a crack in the fence and saw the men “…drinking beer and smashing the bottles on the ground. I thought they had a prostitute or something in there. I thought it might have been some kind of sex party or something. It happened quite often. They were different men each time.”
Rogers noted that when a man would exit the tent, he was given a high-five by the others.
He said he discussed the matter with his brother, Dean, who also lives in the neighborhood. Rogers said they agreed not to contact police explaining, “People don’t even waive to each other or say hello here. You just pay no attention to what is going on with other people. That way, you don’t get shot.”
He now agonizes over that decision and worries that Garrido may have been pimping out Jaycee and her young daughters to strangers. “I hope to God not,” said Dean Rogers.
Garrido and his wife, Nancy, who is accused of helping him kidnap and perpetuate crimes against Jaycee, have both pleaded not guilty to 29 felony counts, including kidnapping, raping, and holding Jaycee captive for 18 years.

Post by tears4caylee Mon Sep 07, 2009 2:05 am

Patricia Garrido, the 88-year-old mother of sex offender Phillip Garrido, said she was horrified to learn that her son had held Jaycee Lee Dugard captive for 18 years. In fact, Patricia said her son had brainwashed her into thinking the girl was his daughter from a former relationship.
After Garrido fathered two daughters with a teenaged Jaycee, Patricia said she believed they too were from a former lover.
Patricia lived in the Garrido home with her son and his wife, Nancy, and was dependent on the couple for care, since she was wheelchair bound.
She told the Mirror she was tricked into believing she had three granddaughters. “Phillip and his elder brother Ron were good boys when growing up. But I always wished I could have had a daughter. So when ‘Allissa’ [Jaycee] appeared one day it was amazing. I was pleased she was around. I was ill and in bed,” she said.
Although Nancy is accused of helping kidnap Jaycee and assisting with her 18-year captivity, Patricia has trouble believing such accusations. “Nancy has a heart of gold and everyone seemed happy. Allissa was a very happy girl. I still call her Allissa because he never told me she was called Jaycee. I just didn’t think there was anything wrong with it,” she said.

The town where Jaycee Lee Dugard was
kidnapped 18 years ago celebrated her astounding reappearance with a
parade Sunday while she remained secluded with her family in Northern
California.

JAYCEE DUGARD - 11 yo (1991) - Lake Tahoe CA - Page 2 20761993_240X180

Dugard's former classmates and teachers were among those who took part
in the one-mile march along South Lake Tahoe's main drag to celebrate
her safe return. She was snatched from a school bus stop in the resort
town in 1991 at the age of 11. "We just want her to know that we
love her and support her," said Jillian Broadfoot, 30, who attended
Meyers Elementary School with Dugard at the time. "I think Tahoe lost
its innocence with the kidnapping, and hopefully her return restores a
little faith here." South Lake Tahoe Police Chief Terry Daniels
estimated 2,000 people took part in the parade and another 500 people
joined them at a rally afterward. Most wore pink attire or held pink
balloons in recognition of Dugard's favorite color. The parade route
was lined by pink ribbons on trees. Some participants yelled
out, "Jaycee, we love you." Others wore pink T-shirts with the message,
"Jaycee, Tahoe (Hearts) You." Meghan Dorris, 28, of Stateline,
was among Dugard classmates who started a pink ribbon campaign when she
was she abducted to show their hope for her safe return. "It
really haunted us over the years, and I'm just excited to get her
back," Dorris said. "Putting myself in her place, I can't imagine what
she went through. I wish her the best in the healing process and hope
she can lead a normal life." Sunday's parade followed the
reverse route of a march held on the 10th anniversary of Dugard's
abduction. Missing person posters that volunteers handed out in the
days after she disappeared in 1991 were stacked near the start and
updated with large black circles with slashes drawn through them.
Dugard had been living in the South Lake Tahoe area with her mother,
stepfather and infant sister for less than a year when she was snatched
off the street. Her stepfather, Carl Probyn, has said they moved there
from Southern California partly because they thought it would be safer.
Phillip Garrido, 58, and his wife, 54-year-old Nancy Garrido, have
pleaded not guilty to 29 counts of kidnapping, rape and false
imprisonment in Dugard's disappearance. Police say the Garridos
held Dugard captive in a backyard encampment of tents and sheds in
Antioch, Calif., and Garrido fathered two children with Dugard. Both
Garridos are being held without bail. Probyn watched the parade
from a sport utility vehicle and attended the rally. He was at Tahoe
with an Australian television crew. "I wanted to be there, but I didn't want to be the center of attention," Probyn said. "I didn't want it to be about me."
Karen Gillis-Tinlin, principal of Meyers Elementary when the kidnapping
occurred, said she can't recall a happier day or a larger throng at
Tahoe. "All I want to do is cry right now," she said. "I feel
overwhelming joy and happiness. Obviously, Jaycee hasn't been
forgotten. She has remained in our minds and hearts all these years." She and classmates remembered Dugard as quiet, friendly and well liked.
"She could have been anyone's child, and that's why you personalize
it," Gillis-Tinlin said. "You think, 'It could have been my child who
was kidnapped."' At a rally afterward, law enforcement officers
and representatives of the sponsoring group Soroptimist International
paid tribute to Dugard and her family. "We wish they could be
here today, but we want to reach out and let them know we love them,"
said Brooke Laine of the Soroptimists. El Dorado County sheriff's Lt. Les Lovell said the Dugard case teaches an important lesson.
"I was suspecting that we would never see her again," he told the
crowd. "Her story shows that anytime there's hope we need to keep hope
alive." Pink T-shirts and cupcakes were sold at the rally, with proceeds going to the Jaycee Dugard Family Fund.

JAYCEE DUGARD - 11 yo (1991) - Lake Tahoe CA - Page 2 Empty Trust fund set up for Jaycee Lee Dugard and daughters

Post by tears4caylee Tue Sep 08, 2009 2:06 am

In 1991, an 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped from a school bus stop in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. After missing for 18 years, she reappeared at an Antioch police station with her two daughters.
As Jaycee’s story unfolded, it was discovered she had been held captive for almost two decades. Sex offender Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, are accused of abducting the girl and keeping her in a makeshift backyard compound behind their home. During this time, Garrido fathered two daughters with Jaycee—Starlite, 15, and Angel, 11.
Garrido and his wife have pleaded not guilty to 29 charges, including kidnapping, rape, and false imprisonment.
Although Jaycee, now 29, endured a harrowing experience, she has been safely reunited with her family. Nonetheless, experts contend the road to rehabilitation for Jaycee and her daughters will be long and difficult.
The Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe has set up a fund to help Jaycee and her family, an those wishing to donate can do so at the address below:

The Contra Costa Sheriff’s Department said on Tuesday that a bone fragment found in the yard next door to Phillip and Nancy Garrido’s home is probably human.
Convicted sex offender Garrido and his wife are accused of kidnapping an 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 and holding her captive for 18 years. Authorities believe Garrido may be connected to several kidnappings and unsolved murders in the area.
Jimmy Lee, a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office, said an independent expert determined the bone found is likely human. The fragment is being sent to the state DNA lab for testing.
According to the Los Angeles Times, Lee wrote in an email that “It should be noted that it is not uncommon to find Native American remains in Contra Costa County.”
The bone fragment was discovered after law enforcement searched the backyard next door to the Garrido home last week using cadaver dogs. In 2006, Garrido took care of the property when it was vacant and sometimes lived in a shed in the backyard.
Jaycee, now 29, reappeared Aug. 26 with two daughters—fathered by Garrido—and is now in seclusion with her family.

abducting, raping and holding Jaycee for 18 years. The pair is set to
appear in court Monday morning for a bail review and another
preliminary hearing. A press conference and statement from the El
Dorado County District Attorney will follow.

Jaycee, now 29, has two daughters allegedly fathered by Phillip
Garrido. It's unknown if Jaycee's children will also appear on Oprah's

"This is a pretty unusual case," Pierson added. "I don't think anybody has ever handled a case quite like this one."
Outside court, Pierson told a throng of media from around the world
that investigators were continuing to pursue other leads in the case. "As of today, there are no additional charges ... That's not to say there won't be," he said.
He said Dugard and her children were doing exceptionally well under the
circumstances after being reunited with Dugard's mother shortly after
the Garridos were arrested Aug. 27. "Basic human decency mandates honoring the family's request for privacy," he said.
He declined to comment on rumors that Dugard, now 29, has agreed to
appear on The Oprah Winfrey Show and praised the state parole agent who
brought the Garridos into custody. The agent, whom Pierson
identified as Eddie Santos, questioned Phillip Garrido after being
notified by University of California, Berkeley police employees that
the convicted sex offender had arrived on campus with two children
while attempting to distribute religious pamphlets. "This parole
agent successfully broke through the elaborate, well-planned cover
story that was 18 years in the making," Pierson said. "We all owe him a
debt of gratitude." Gordon Hinkle, a spokesman for the
California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, would not
confirm that Santos was the parole agent. But he said Garrido's most
recent parole officer had been assigned to the case only since December.
He said the department was reviewing its handling of Garrido's parole
but would not release any details because it did not want to interfere
with the ongoing criminal case. Before Monday's hearing, Deputy
District Attorney Trish Kelliher filed a declaration seeking higher
bail for both suspects, citing the serious nature of the crimes and
saying they should be considered flight risks. She also said in
her court filing that a stun gun was used to subdue the victim when she
was kidnapped from a school bus stop in 1991. Both defendants
are due back in court for an Oct. 29 hearing. The district attorney's
office said it could take a year to 18 months to bring the case to
trial.

Rumors of a televised interview with 1991 kidnap victim Jaycee Lee
Dugard are completely unfounded, says a family representative.

Sunday, the UK Daily Mirror reported
Dugard will appear on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in December. The article
goes on to say Dugard will be paid $1 million for the appearance.
Dugard family spokeswoman Erica Price Schulte told News10 that plans for any television interview were completely false.
In a recent interview with The Insider's Samantha Harris, Oprah Winfrey did say the Jaycee Lee Dugard interview is an interview she wants.
"I want that interview," Oprah said. "This is the first time I have
ever called up a producer and said 'are we on this story?' because I
want that interview."
Sex offender Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy Garrido, are
charged with the abduction, rape and imprisonment of Dugard. She was
taken from South Lake Tahoe and 1991.
Jaycee, now 29, has two daughters allegedly fathered by Phillip
Garrido. Dugard and her daughters have been reunited with Jaycee's
mother.

Investigators have found bones on the property where kidnapping
suspects Phillip and Nancy Garrido lived for 18 years with Jaycee
Dugard and her two daughters, police said Wednesday. Sharon Murch says the case of her daughter, Michaela Garecht, is similar to Jaycee Dugard's.
More bones of undetermined origin also were found on property adjacent to the home,
Lt. Chris Orrey of the Hayward Police Department said. "We
have located what appear to be bones on both properties," Orrey told
reporters. "We can't tell at this point if those bones are human or
animal." The evidence has been sent to a laboratory for analysis, Orrey said.Hayward Police executed a search warrant Tuesday for the Garrido home
and the neighboring property in connection with the 1988 abduction of
Michaela Garecht, police said.In addition, police in Dublin, California, obtained a search warrant
for the same locations in their investigation of the 1989 disappearance
of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff, police said. Both warrants were being executed simultaneously Tuesday, police said. Garecht's mother said Tuesday that she holds out hope that her daughter will be found alive."I know that if Jaycee Dugard can be found alive and come home after 18
years, then my daughter can be found alive and come home," Sharon Murch
told reporters at a news conference. The Garridos face a combined 29 felony counts in connection with the
1991 kidnapping of Dugard, then 11, from South Lake Tahoe, California. Authorities believe the couple held Dugard in a well-hidden compound behind their home for 18 years and have said Phillip Garrido,
a registered sex offender, fathered two children with Dugard. The
Garridos live near Antioch, California, in unincorporated Contra Costa
County, east of San Francisco. Police from both agencies said
that while Garrido has not been named a suspect in the other
abductions, he cannot be eliminated as a suspect in either case.
Neither police department has interviewed Dugard, police said.Garecht was abducted by a stranger in front of a market in south
Hayward on November 19, 1988, according to Murch's Web site on her
missing daughter, MissingMichaela.com. Over the past two decades,
police have followed some 13,000 tips in investigating her
disappearance, Orrey said. She said Hayward police have also noted similarities between the
Garecht and Dugard cases. The victims were similar in age and
appearance, Orrey said, and both were abducted in daylight, in a
"brazen" manner. The suspect vehicle in the Garecht case is
also similar to the sedan found on the Garrido property, she added, and
in pictures from that time, Garrido appears to resemble a sketch of a
suspect based on a witness description. Murch said she also noticed the similarities in their cases and thought it could lead to finding her daughter. "My first thought when I heard Jaycee was found was please, God, let Michaela be with her," Murch said. Misheloff failed to make it home from school on January 30, 1989, Dublin Police Lt. Kurt von Savoye said."For 20 years, we have been attempting to determine what happened."
There is no eyewitness that could say with certainty she was abducted,
and evidence in the case was limited, he said. A witness did
report seeing Misheloff getting into a vehicle, a sedan similar to one
found on the Garrido property, at the time of her disappearance, von
Savoye said. Garrido "has demonstrated a propensity to abduct young
girls," police said in a statement, and he was released from prison a
few months before Misheloff disappeared. Dublin is about 40 miles from
Antioch.
Misheloff's family is aware of the search warrant execution but are out of town on a family emergency, von Savoye said.
In the property search, there are no current plans in place to raze
structures, Orrey said, but "we are very interested in what might be
behind walls, under flooring, under the ground." Authorities are
prepared to disassemble structures if needed, she said.

Two cadaver dogs trained to
detect human remains indicated Thursday they had found something on the
property of kidnap suspects Phillip and Nancy Garrido as investigators
continued their search for evidence linking them to two other Bay Area
child abductions. The first dog gave a weak indication of a
finding, which was confirmed more strongly by the second dog, Alameda
County Sheriff's Office Sgt. J.D. Nelson said at an afternoon news
conference.Authorities would not go into specifics about where on the property the detection was made. Equipment
such as magnetometers and ground-penetrating radar and other search
dogs trained in finding archaeological remains will be used Friday to
further

investigate the area. The equipment can search about 20 feet below the surface, authorities said.Nelson said the soil on the Garrido property is sandy, making it easier to search. Authorities
are seeking clues that may tie the Garridos to the disappearances of
Michaela Garecht in Hayward in 1988 and Ilene Misheloff in Dublin in
1989. On Thursday, investigators removed 10 additional
truckloads of debris from the Garrido property and a neighboring
property, according Hayward police Lt. Christine Orrey. They also
disassembled some tents, sheds and other structures in the back of the
Garrido property and began their search of the inside of the home,
which lies in an unincorporated area near Antioch.Investigators plan to remove a concrete slab and hope to complete
the search of the interior of the Garrido home on Friday before
suspending their investigation for the weekend, Orrey said. On
Wednesday, investigators discovered bones and removed three truckloads
of trash, weeds and debris. Orrey said it was unknown whether the bones
found Wednesday were human, and that they would require testing. She
had no further information about the bones Thursday. The Garridos
have been charged with kidnapping Jaycee Dugard in 1991 and hiding her
in their backyard. They have pleaded not guilty. Dugard has been
reunited with her family.Investigators have also removed a
carport from the Garrido property. Orrey said no decision has been made
on whether to raze the house.

A child's sneaker lies in the sand. Dishes are
stacked in the kitchen sink. And a box of crayons sits next to a filthy
fish tank.
Those are some of the 102 images that appear in newly-released photographs of the home of Phillip and Nancy Garrido in Antioch.
JAYCEE DUGARD - 11 yo (1991) - Lake Tahoe CA - Page 2 0_68_home1_320
Authorities allege that the Garridos kidnapped Jaycee Dugard in 1991, that Phillip Garrido fathered two daughters with her and that the couple held all three captive for several years.
Contra Costa County building inspectors took the
photographs on Aug. 31 when they condemned the property at 1554 Walnut
Avenue as unsafe to occupy. KCRA obtained the photographs from the
building department on Thursday through an official public records act
request. Many of the photographs show piles of boxes, mattresses, and debris in the
back yard. Others show a wooden shed with makeshift electrical wiring
and metal bars on the window. Also visible in the piles are two
Barbie-style dolls and a stuffed panda.
There is a damaged above-ground swimming pool, a child's bicycle and a plastic white toilet.
The interior rooms are in a state of disarray, with pieces of furniture
piled on top of one another and papers strewn on the floor.
Pots and dishes fill the kitchen sink and cover the counters and stove.
Cupboards are open. A can of pinto beans, a jar of peanut butter and a
box of crackers sit on a microwave oven stand.
In another room, a projection screen sits against a wall and a computer
sits on a dark wooden desk. Above the computer, apparently taped to the
wall, are printed definitions of the words "faith" and "truth."
A written report signed by building inspector Dan Wilson and dated Sept. 10 identifies the property owner as Patricia Franzen, who is Phillip Garrido's elderly mother. Among the violations listed on
the report are "hazardous wiring used for occupancy, piles of garbage,
refuse, discarded furniture, discarded appliances, yard cuttings,
cardboard boxes and barrels, discarded personal and household items,
improperly stored non operational vehicles, vehicle parts, tarps,
plastic and metal buckets, open septic hole and outside toilet that is
not connected to a sewer or septic system."
The Garridos, who are being held in jail in Placerville, have already pleaded not guilty to charges in the Dugard case. Since Tuesday, there's been an extensive search involving search dogs and
ground-penetrating radar on the Garrido property and a neighboring
yard, to which Phillip Garrido had access.
Hayward police Lt. Christine Orrey said her department is looking for clues to the kidnapping of Michaela Garecht in 1988, including the clothes she was wearing when the then-9-year-old
was snatched outside of a supermarket. Dublin police are also looking
for links to the kidnapping of 13-year-old Ilene Misheloff in 1989.
Similarities between the 1980s cases and the 1991 abduction of Dugard prompted the search.
Authorities said they found a small bone fragment during a search Wednesday.
However, it's unknown if the fragment is human or animal.
"From an evidence-collecting perspective, it's very difficult. This is kind
of like sifting through a landfill," J.D. Nelson from the Alameda
County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday. "I would describe it as
somebody who's saved and collected years and years and years worth of
junk." Orrey said some structures were torn down, including a carport, during the
search. Authorities could also be seen cutting down trees and clearing
brush. Investigators have not been able to question the Garridos in connection to the two
other cases, nor have they been able to talk to Dugard about what she
might know about them, according to officials.

The property where Jaycee Dugard was held
captive for 18 years became the site of an archaeological-style dig
Friday as authorities revealed the discovery of another bone and a soil
"anomaly" that could indicate something lies buried in an area where
cadaver dogs earlier picked up a scent.
Police from the cities of Dublin and Hayward
have been searching the land to see if Phillip and Nancy Garrido, the
couple charged with kidnapping Dugard in 1991, can be tied to two other
Northern California child abductions from the late 1980s.
They cautioned that it was too soon to know whether the bone — one of
several fragments recovered from the Garrido property and a neighboring
parcel — or the presence of disturbed soil that indicates previous
spadework were related to any crimes.
"It could be a lot of different things. It could be significant, and it
could not be significant, but it's helping us target where we might do
some digging," said Hayward Police Lt. Chris Orrey.
Orrey said Dugard, who was snatched outside her South Lake Tahoe home in
1991, has not supplied any information to indicate the Garridos were
involved in the 1988 kidnapping of 9-year-old Michaela Garecht outside
a Hayward market and the 1989 disappearance of 13-year-old Ilene
Misheloff in Dublin.
"She's nosay they hid Dugard in their Antioch backyard. The Garridos have pleaded not guilty.
Investigators already have dismantled the hidden encampment of sheds and tents where
authorities say Dugard was held and lived with the two daughters she
had by Garrido. They also removed 19 truckloads of debris from the yard
and looked inside the Garrido's house.
Orrey said they have taken "boxes and boxes" of papers in Phillip Garrido's handwriting.
"We will have to take it offsite and go through every single page to see if there's something significant," she said.
New photographs taken by Contra Costa County building inspectors at the
request of the sheriff's department show the inside of the home
cluttered with clothing, overturned mattresses and other debris.Tables, couches, beds and other pieces of
furniture also are buried under paperwork, toys, pillows and clothes.
Piles of dishes spilled out of the sink; pots and bowls emptied onto
the kitchen floor from overcrowded cupboards, the pictures showed.
Cords snaked through the house hooking up a computer, television and other
electronics, and a fish tank was clouded with dirty water.
Despite the scientific scrutiny the yard is undergoing, Silva said the
technology is not foolproof and that a significant piece of evidence
could remain hidden deep underground.
"We will never walk away and say we have seen everything and there is
nothing left in there. We can't make that determination," he said.

Jaycee Dugard says the 29-year-old has released her first public
statement since resufacing two months ago in Northern California,
saying she is happy to be with her family and have their unconditional
love and support.

Spokeswoman Erika Price Schulte says that Dugard has released the statement to
People magazine along with photos of herself as an adult.
The magazine plans to publish the photos on their Web site early Wednesday morning.Dugard was 11 when police say she was abducted outside her South Lake Tahoe home in 1991.
Phillip Garrido and his wife, Nancy, have been charged with kidnapping and rape
in Dugard's 18-year disappearance. The Garrido's have pleaded not

The California Department of
Corrections and Rehabilitation failed to properly supervise convicted
rapist Phillip Garrido and missed opportunities to discover the alleged
kidnapping victim, Jaycee Dugard, held for 18 years, according to a
newly released report.

The report says that at one stage, officials knew there was a 12-year-old
girl living on the property but failed to do anything about it.
And the document accuses the department of failing to refer Garrido for a mental health assessment.
The California Inspector General's Office released a summary of the report
Wednesday on its Web site. The office planned an afternoon news
conference to release the full report.
The inquiry was launched after Garrido and his wife were arrested for
allegedly kidnapping Dugard and holding her captive in his backyard.
Authorities say Dugard was repeatedly raped by Garrido, who fathered her two children.
Questions arose about how Garrido managed to keep Dugard hidden for so long
despite being monitored by parole officers because of a previous rape
conviction.

The man accused of kidnapping and raping Jaycee Dugard has issued an
apology in a jailhouse letter that talks about “a sexual problem
believed to be impossible.”
In a letter Sacramento, Calif., television station KCRA received
Thursday, Phillip Garrido says he wants to “apologize to every human
being for what has taken place.”
Garrido and his wife, Nancy, have been charged with abducting Dugard
from a South Lake Tahoe bus stop in 1991 and holding her captive for 18
years in their backyard. Both have pleaded not guilty.
Garrido’s lawyer, Susan Gellman, says he is expressing genuine
remorse. She also says there are “obvious issues” over whether he’s
mentally competent to stand trial.
In a previous letter to the television station, Garrido alleged that
Dugard’s civil rights were being violated during questioning with
authorities.

The trial against Phillip and Nancy Garrido could
be moved to Sacramento, Stockton or Modesto, as finding impartial
jurors could be difficult in Placerville, according to a former deputy
district attorney.Erik Schlueter served as a deputy district
attorney in El Dorado County for 16 years, and was in that role in 1991
when Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped."It's kind of quieted down,
but occasionally it flares up and people just shake their heads and
wonder how this could happen here in El Dorado County," Schlueter said.Phillip Garrido's attorney, Susan Gellman, said a change of venue is something attorneys will still have to consider."Change
of venue? … I think that's something that we'll have to look at … the
only problem is … where would we go?" Gellman said.Moving the trial would not a be a huge expense unless it goes to San Francisco or Los Angeles.Schlueter also said that "there's the possibility of an insanity plea on this [case]."There
are up to six different agencies currently providing funding to the
Dugards, including state, federal, the El Dorado County District
Attorney's office and the Victim/Witness Emergency Fund.It
doesn't mean Dugard is in line to testify in this case, it means she's
entitled to those benefits as a victim of a violent crime.Schlueter
has reviewed this criminal complaint against the Garridos filed in late
August. He said he agrees with the 29 counts the district attorney is
after, with the exception of some errors."They do need to go
through the complaint and clean up … there are some errors in the
complaint that I've seen. They're not catastrophic errors, just
language errors," Schlueter said.Dugard was 11 when police said
Phillip and Nancy Garrido kidnapped her in Meyers, then allegedly held
her captive for 18 years in a hidden, backyard compound in Contra Costa
County. Garrido is accused of fathering Dugard's two children, who are
now 11 and 15.

A brief discovery hearing was held Friday for Phillip and Nancy Garrido, the couple accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard. Both the prosecution and defense provided an update during the pre-preliminary hearing in Placerville. It's still unclear who will ultimately represent Nancy Garrido.El
Dorado County Superior Court records show Stephen Tapson has been
approved as her interim counsel. Attorney Gilbert Maines previously
represented her. Both Tapson and Maines were in court Friday.Maines
was kicked off the case for allegedly discussing its details at his
golf club and saying he would make money on a book or movie deal after
the trial. He denies the accusations and is fighting to stay on the case.Maines said he hopes "that the court will uphold my position and put me back as her attorney of record."Meanwhile,
Judge Douglas Phimister said the court had received more information
from the district attorney's office, but sealed it out of concern it
could prejudice the case.Dugard's biological father, Ken Slayton, and his attorney, Gloria Allred, were also at the courthouse Friday.Slayton has yet to meet Dugard."I
had always felt that someday I would have a little blond girl … would
come knocking on the door and say, 'Hey, are you my daddy?' And I hope
that someday that girl comes knocking on my door," Slayton said.Katherine Callaway Hall, who was abducted and raped in 1976 by Phillip Garrido, also showed up at the courthouse on Friday."I didn't have the gut reaction I had last time," Hall said. The next hearing for Garrido is set for Jan. 21 at 1 p.m.Maines
would like to continue representing Nancy Garrido, who is suspected of
helping her husband abduct 11-year-old Dugard in Meyers in 1991.Dugard,
who is now 29, was allegedly held captive for 18 years in a hidden,
backyard compound in Contra Costa County. Phillip Garrido is accused of
fathering Dugard's two children, who are now 11 and 15.

PLACERVILLE, Calif. — A judge has set
bail at $20 million for a woman accused of kidnapping and raping Jaycee
Dugard and holding her captive for 18 years.

In setting the high bail amount, El Dorado Superior Court Judge Douglas
Phimister said Thursday he considered Nancy Garrido to be a danger to
the community and a flight risk.
Garrido has pleaded not guilty in the 1991 kidnapping and sexual assault.
Her husband, Phillip Garrido, also has pleaded not guilty. His bail was set at $30 million in September.
Also Thursday, Phimister appointed a new lawyer for Nancy Garrido and said a
weeks-long dispute over her representation had sidetracked the case and
could adversely affect the defendant's rights.
The next hearing is scheduled for March 25.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. --
Jaycee Lee Dugard's daughters are officially
listed in the state's records. In December, a state judge ordered birth
certificates for both girls. The documents list the official
names of the two girls, but KCRA 3 will not release them. One of the
names listed is different from what has widely been reported. Both of
the girls' last names are listed as "Dugard" on the document. The
birth certificates list birth dates of August of 1994 and November of
1997, making one child 15 years old and the other child 12 years old.Accused
kidnapper Phillip Garrido was listed as the girls' father. The birth
address was listed as the home of Phillip and Nancy Garrido.Sacramento
attorney Johnny Griffin said the prosecution will use the birth records
