When Allyn Raymond Hanson appeared for sentencing Aug. 27 for 1st
degree felony assault on a 14-month-old boy in October 2008, it was
fairly anticlimactic.

Hanson, now 21, has been an inmate at St. Cloud Correctional Facility
since July 6 after entering a plea agreement the week before that would
require that he serve 120 months in jail.

That
is an upward durational departure from the 86 months stipulated in the
Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines and based on particular vulnerability
of the victim based on his age, size, and having been alone with his
attacker.

Under the plea agreement, charges of attempted 1st and 3rd degree murder were dismissed.

It was on October 24, 2008 that Hanson was watching his girlfriend’s
son, Ryan, while she was at work. The child was “clingy,” said Hanson
at his July 1 plea hearing, and kept following him around the Braham
Meadows apartment.

Every time Hanson would walk away from him, he said, Ryan would cry.
Hanson said he “flew into a rage” and kicked the youngster in the
buttocks, raising him in the air several times.

When the boy continued to cry, Hanson said he picked him up and shook him. Now unconscious, Ryan didn’t cry any more.

When Hanson and the child’s mother, Deanna Jacobs, took Ryan to the
Emergency Room at Cambridge Medical Center, physicians found the
toddler unresponsive with a fractured skull and bleeding into his
brain.

Medical personnel cast doubt on Hanson’s and Jacob’s explanations that
Ryan had fallen down a flight of stairs and ordered the child airlifted
to HCMC where he was placed in Pediatric Intensive Care.

Ryan is now in the custody of his biological father, Nick Goulet, and
his health and skills are improving through weekly therapy. But while
he is recovering, he still lags behind in language and other skills.

And he wakes at night screaming, screaming, says Goulet, because of what happened to him at the hands of Allyn Raymond Hanson.

“I hope God can forgive you,” he said, addressing Hanson, “but I know I never will for what you did to my son.”

Much has been said about Hanson’s perceived lack of remorse and a
belief that he has been “deceiving the court.” The premise of both
beliefs was challenged by public defender Bill Robyt.

Said Robyt, “He fully admitted what he did. He’s always said he’s extremely sorry.

“The court needs to see the other side. To say that he’s been deceiving the court and not sorry is just not true.”

As the hearing drew to a close, Hanson was given an opportunity to
address the court and family and friends of Ryan who were present.

“There’s nothing I can say or do that will take back what I did to the
victim or his family. I’m sorry for what I’ve done. No one should have
to go through that.”

Hanson was returned to St. Cloud prison where he will serve a minimum
of 80 months in custody followed by 40 months on supervised release. If
he commits any infractions while in prison he could be ordered to serve
the entire 120 months incarcerated.
