KAMARI EDWARDS - 1 yo (2009) - Waco TX
Autopsy results have ruled an infant death in Waco a homicide.
On Monday, a capital murder warrant was issued for
Alfred Kilinus Cornelious, 20, for the murder of one-year-old Kamari
Jae Edwards. Cornelious was a relative of Edwards.
The Waco Police Department and emergency personnel
were called the Village Apartments, 1100 N. Sixth St., just before
midnight on Aug. 15 where they found the one-year-old not breathing.
Cornelious told officers the child had either drowned
or choked on something. When revival attempts were unsuccessful,
Justice of the Peace Villarreal ordered an autopsy on the child.
According to officers, Cornelious seemed very
incoherent with the details of the incident, and that's when he was
taken to Providence Hospital for psychiatric evaluation.
He was later transported to the Austin State Hospital on an emergency psychiatric warrant and remains there.
The warrant has not yet been served.

Waco police have
determined an infant’s death last week was a homicide and issued a
capital murder arrest warrant for the man who was caring for the child
at the time of his death.
Alfred Kilinus Cornelious, 20, is named in the arrest warrant
affidavit as being responsible for the death of his 15-month-old
nephew, Kamari Jae Edwards.
Officers and emergency personnel found the infant not breathing when
they responded to a call of a questionable death at the Village
Apartments, located at 1100 N. 6 St. in Waco. Police received a 9-1-1
call at 11:59 p.m. Aug. 15.
According to the arrest warrant affidavit, the call was made by Cornelious, who was caring for the boy.
The child was taken to Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center but couldn’t
be resuscitated, according to a release by the Waco Police Department.
Justice of the Peace Fernando Villarreal pronounced the child dead at
the hospital.
Based on an autopsy report ordered by Villarreal, the boy died of
“mechanical asphyxia,” which includes forms of suffocation such as
strangulation, smothering and drowning. Investigators haven’t released
specifics on the child’s death.
Cornelious seemed incoherent at the scene and told officers the
child choked on something or had drowned, the release states. He was
taken to Providence Health Center for psychiatric evaluation.
Cornelious is now at the Austin State Hospital.
The warrant for his arrest, issued Monday by Justice of the Peace Kristi DeCluitt, has not yet been delivered to Cornelious.

Grand Jury Indicts Waco Man In Death Of 15-Month-Old NephewA 20-year-old Waco man who was charged with capital murder in the death of his 15-month-old nephew was indicted Wednesday.
AUSTIN (November 18, 2009)--The McLennan County Grand Jury returned a murder charging capital murder Wednesday against Alfred Kilinus Cornelius, 20, of Waco who was arrested in September in Austin after his release from the Austin State Hospital and charged in the death of his 15-month-old nephew.
Waco police officers found 15-month-old Kamari Jae Edwards unconscious and not breathing just before midnight on Aug. 15 after responding to a call at the Village Apartments at 1100 N. 6th St.
They performed CPR until paramedics and firefighters arrived.
The infant was taken to Hillcrest Baptist medical Center, but never regained consciousness and was later pronounced dead.
An autopsy determined that the infant died of mechanical asphyxiation, but other details of the death have not been released.
According to the affidavit submitted for the arrest warrant, Cornelius was caring for the infant and was the only person in the apartment.
He placed the 911 call to report the infant was not breathing.
The affidavit says investigators later determined that Cornelius “did force or block the oxygen”, causing the boy’s death.
Cornelius, whom police described as a relative of the infant, told officers that the child had drowned or choked on something, police said Monday.
“Cornelius seemed very incoherent when officers tried to find out what had happened to the child,” police said Monday.
He was taken to Providence Health Center for psychiatric evaluation and was later transferred to the Austin State Hospital on an emergency psychiatric warrant.
