"Jane Doe" - 17 Months (2009) - Wisconsin Rapids WI
A Wisconsin Rapids man faces at least 25 years in prison after he
pleaded guilty Monday to charges that he injured and sexually assaulted
a toddler left in his care.
Jeremy M. Lund, 25, was found guilty of first-degree sexual assault and
physical abuse of a child, both as a repeat offender. As part of a plea
agreement, multiple misdemeanor charges and a felony charge of burglary
were dismissed and read into the record.During
a short plea hearing Monday morning, family and friends of the victim
sat in the courtroom, at times crying during the proceedings. Several
officers stood in the back of the room, providing extra security.According
to the criminal complaint, a 17-month-old girl's parents left her in
Lund's care Jan. 20 while they went grocery shopping. When the parents
returned about two hours later, they discovered the child injured and
bleeding in her crib. She had bruises on her face, head and ears and
injuries consistent with sexual abuse.Lund was gone. While
the child's mother took the young girl to the emergency room, her
father waited for Lund to return. When he did, Lund apologized and said
the girl was hurt after she fell off the couch, according to court
records. The next day, Lund told authorities he blacked out and couldn't remember how the child got hurt.DNA evidence from the baby was found on Lund, and DNA evidence from Lund was recovered from the baby, the complaint said.Lund
faces a maximum of 70 years in prison for the assault and abuse
charges, and he must serve a mandatory minimum of 25 years in prison.
Wood County Circuit Court Judge Greg Potter scheduled Lund's sentencing
for Nov. 2.In
2003, Lund was sentenced to six months in jail for child abuse. In that
case, he told authorities a baby fell from a table, according to the
complaint.

Re: "Jane Doe" - 17 Months (2009) - Wisconsin Rapids WI
A 26-year-old Wisconsin Rapids man convicted of sexually assaulting a toddler told a Wood County judge he no longer wants to withdraw his plea in the case.
Jeremy M. Lund and his attorney, Paul LaZotte, appeared by phone during a motion hearing scheduled in front of Wood County Circuit Court Judge Greg Potter on Monday. LaZotte verified Lund wanted to withdraw a motion he filed to set aside his guilty plea and conviction for the charges of first-degree sexual assault of a child and child abuse.During questioning by his attorney, Lund indicated he understood withdrawing the motion meant he could no longer use the services of the state's Public Defender's Office. Lund said he had not been threatened or coerced into withdrawing the motion. After listening to LaZotte question Lund, Potter repeated the same questions, drawing the same one-word answers from Lund, indicating he had not been threatened or pressured into withdrawing the plea. Potter allowed Lund to withdraw the motion. In November, Potter sentenced Lund to 40 years in prison and an additional 20 years of extended supervision for the sexual assault and abuse charges.According to the criminal complaint, Lund sexually assaulted a then 17-month-old girl while he was baby-sitting her. The toddler's parents returned home to find Lund missing and the girl covered with blood in her crib. The motion, which was withdrawn Monday, stated Potter failed to properly inform Lund that by entering a guilty plea, he waived his right to a trial.
