Terrance Wainright apologized in one breath, then blamed his victim in the next.But
a Jackson County judge told Wainright on Friday that the blame
ultimately came back to him and then sentenced him to life in prison
without parole for the 1997 killing of his 15-year-old stepdaughter.Wainright was sentenced to an additional 90 years for wounding his 10-year-old stepson and related charges.Wainright,
51, was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Candice
Bruner. He was also convicted of assault and armed criminal action.Friday’s
sentences will run consecutively to the 60-year term he received after
pleading guilty to killing Candice’s mother, JoAnn Bruner-Wainright,
during the same 1997 incident in Raytown.According to testimony,
Wainright attacked his wife, and Candice picked up a knife and tried to
help her mother. Wainright shot his wife, took the knife away from
Candice and shot her and her brother.“I never meant for this to happen,” Wainright said Friday. He said it wouldn’t have happened if Candice had not attacked him with the knife.
