VACAVILLE
— A Vacaville couple charged with child endangerment and firearms
violations following the accident shooting death of their 2-year-old
daughter last year reached a plea agreement with prosecutors Thursday.Daniela
and Michael Shanahan were arrested after their daughter, Ayana, was
fatally shot on Sept. 23 after her 8-year-old brother found his
father's handgun lying on a bed in their home and accidentally
discharged the weapon, striking his sister with one shot. The couple
was arrested two weeks later following a lengthy police investigation
into the circumstances of the shooting. In court Thursday,
Daniela Shanahan pleaded guilty to one count of child endangerment in
exchange for all other charges being dismissed. Michael Shanahan
pleaded no contest to one count of unsafe storage of a firearm, in
exchange for all other charges being dropped.Deputy District
Attorney Terry Ray said she will argue for each parent to serve a
two-year prison term when they return to court for sentencing at 1:30
p.m. on April 30.Defense attorney Anthony Finkas, who represents Michael Shanahan said he will argue for probation.Outside
of the courtroom today, Finkas said the family had "suffered enough"
through the loss of their daughter. "They already have a life
sentence," he said.
