JANAYA WALLACE - 20 Months (2009)/ Charged: Father and GF; Jerome Jermain Wallace and Natarsha Farmer - Baltimore MD
City police say they are investigating the death of an 20-month-old girl on Saturday as a homicide.
Officers were called to the 2800 block of Kentucky Ave, in the Bel
Air-Edison community in Northeast Baltimore, at about 2:30 p.m. for a
report of an infant who was not breathing, said Donny Moses, a police
spokesman. When medics arrived, the father was attempting to perform
CPR on the child, identified as Janaya Wallace.
Janaya was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at about 3 p.m.
Detectives noticed slight scrapes on both sides of her neck, and bruising on her
forehead and cheek, Moses said. An autopsy determined she died from being beaten.
According to a preliminary investigation, the girl's parents said they
put her to sleep on a sofa at about 11:30 p.m. on Dec. 18, and reported
that they "heard the baby snoring" throughout the night and morning.
At 2:15 p.m., they went to wake the baby and noticed her lips were blue
and she was not breathing, and they called 911. Moses said the
investigation is continuing.
Fifteen juveniles have been killed in 2009, compared with 28 last year.
Janaya is the first victim this year who is under age 14.
