Oakland police say the woman in custody for the
death of her 2-year-old daughter admitted to them she killed the child.
Police won't say if Tiffany Lopez admitted killing the child
intentionally or by accident, but based on interviews with her and
others, the department has filed murder charges against the woman.
Family members called police yesterday afternoon after little Kamilah
Russell was found unresponsive in the family apartment on High Street.
She was taken to the hospital where she died.
Police believe the child was suffocated.
Lopez initially told police the child died after she accidentally sat
on the girl while playing hide-and-seek.
Lopez, who is pregnant, also has a 7-month old daughter who has been
placed in protective custody.
She is due to be arraigned on murder charges Friday morning.

OMG we keep seeing this and I know I keep saying this. She had a 2 year old, a 7 month old and decided to get pregnant again and she doesn't look very old herself. Can't family, friends, doctors, CYFS see there's something wrong with someone who continuously gets pregnant? It's like bulimia or overeating and other disorders and the outcome is tragic.

The young mother accused in the suffocation death of her 2-year-old child was
charged with murder Friday by the Alameda County District Attorney's Office and
is being held without bail.
Tiffany Lopez, 19, appeared in court in a wheelchair Friday afternoon.
Alameda County Superior Court Judge Robert McGuiness told her she is being
charged in the death of her daughter, Kamilah Russell.
A family member holds an undated snapshot of
two-year-old Kamilah Russell, left,
and her 6-month-old sister Tania.
Kamilah's mother has been charged in the smothering death of Kamilah
Lopez, who is three months pregnant, admitted suffocating Kamilah on Tuesday
afternoon inside the High Street apartment in East Oakland where the family had
lived for just three weeks after moving from San Mateo, police said.
Lopez and Kamilah's father, Joseph Russell Jr., also have a 7-month-old
infant, who had been placed in protective custody. The infant was returned to
Russell's family Friday afternoon.
Lopez's family members who attended court Friday refused to comment when
surrounded by a pack of television reporters.
Police said Lopez called 911 about 4:30 p.m. Tuesday from the apartment in
the 2800 block of High Street to say Kamilah was not breathing. The child was
taken to Children's Hospital Oakland, where she was pronounced dead at 5:35
p.m.
Lopez initially told police that she and her daughter had been playing
hide-and-seek in the apartment and that she accidentally sat on the child, who
Lopez said was hiding under a couch cushion. Several members of Russell's family
said Lopez telephoned them Tuesday afternoon and repeated the story.
Lopez was arrested Wednesday morning on suspicion of murder after she told
homicide investigators she became "frustrated" with her daughter and suffocated
the child, authorities said. Investigators believe she held her hand over the
child's mouth until the girl stopped breathing.
Russell and Lopez have been together for about 3½ years, authorities said.
They were both living in the High Street apartment since their recent move from
San Mateo. On Tuesday, Russell had left the apartment shortly before the
incident to go to his mother's house to pick up his brothers, police said. He
intended to bring them to the new apartment for a visit and was only away a
short time, police said.
Lopez's mother, Linda Lopez, 44, of San Mateo, told reporters her daughter
suffers from a chemical imbalance and did not intend to kill the child. Tiffany
Lopez was out on bail for a Dec. 24 child endangerment arrest in San Mateo
County. In that incident, Lopez got into a fight with her 11-year-old brother
and police were called, family members said.
Funeral services for Kamilah will be held at noon Wednesday at the
McNary-Morgan Mortuary, 3630 Telegraph Ave.
Lopez was referred to the Public Defender's Office and is expected to return
to court Monday afternoon.

TIFFANY LOPEZ WAS ORDERED TO STAND TRIAL ON A MURDER CHARGE FOR HER DAUGHTER IN OAKLAND
Published by Staff Reporter on March 30, 2011
A judge today ordered a 20-year-old Oakland woman to stand trial on a murder charge for the asphyxiation death of her 2-year-old daughter last year. Aameda County Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Horner also ruled that prosecutors presented enough evidence at a two-day preliminary hearing to have Tiffany Lopez stand trial on a charge of assault on a child under the age of 8 causing death. In a brief summary of his case before Horner ruled, prosecutor Patrick Moriarty said he doesn’t think that Lopez, who is being held in custody without bail, planned to kill her daughter, Kamilah Russell, on March 9, 2010. But Moriarty said he believes Lopez’s confession to Oakland police in a lengthy interrogation that night and the following morning that she covered Kamilah’s mouth for about 17 seconds indicates that Lopez acted with implied malice because she must have known that the natural consequences of her actions were dangerous to human life, especially to a 2-year-old. Moriarty said Lopez “covered Kamilah’s mouth and nose and that’s what led to the child’s death.” Oakland police said they received a 911 call at 4:30 p.m. on March 9, 2010, reporting that Kamilah wasn’t breathing. Kamilah was with Lopez at the apartment in the 2800 block of High Street where they lived with Russell’s father, Joseph Russell Jr., who wasn’t at home at the time. Kamilah was taken to Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where she was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m. that day. Lopez, who had moved to Oakland from San Mateo about three weeks earlier, was arrested shortly afterward. A pathologist ruled that Kamilah died of asphyxia due to
smothering, finding that there was an inadequate blood flow to her brain. Lopez’s lawyer, Lindsay Horstman, told Horner that she thinks there is insufficient evidence to have Lopez stand trial for murder, but she didn’t explain why. She didn’t challenge the assault charge. In cross-examining Oakland police Officer Jason Andersen, who was the lead investigator in the case, Horstman noted that during Lopez’s interrogation she said nearly 60 times that Kamilah’s death had been an accident. Horstman also said that Lopez was under a lot of stress at the time because she had just turned 19 but had two children and was three months pregnant with a third child. In her videotaped interview with Andersen and Sgt. Gus Galindo, which was played in court, Lopez said she briefly covered Kamilah’s mouth because “I was frustrated” since Kamilah was loudly screaming for her father, Joseph Russell Jr., who wasn’t at home at the time. Sobbing, Lopez said, “All I wanted to do was to get her to stop. She wasn’t supposed to die.” Lopez said, “I didn’t mean to kill her! I love my baby girl!” Lopez initially told police in her interview that she had been playing hide-and-seek with Kamilah and didn’t realize until it was too late that her daughter was underneath her and she crushed her when she sat on the couch at the apartment. But Andersen and Galindo told Lopez that her story didn’t make sense because she weighed nearly 250 pounds and Kamilah only weighed 37 pounds and Kamilah would have screamed in agony if Lopez had sat on her. When Horstman asked Andersen today if he and Galindo were overly-aggressive in questioning Lopez and tried to force her into making a confession, Andersen said he thinks that her initial story was a lie and he merely “tried to get her to tell the truth.” He said that eventually, “I got a story that fit the evidence.”

Oakland Woman Pleads Not Guilty To Murdering Daughter
Posted: 7:45 pm PDT May 3, 2010
OAKLAND, Calif. -- A 19-year-old Oakland woman tearfully pleaded not guilty Monday to a murder charge for the death of her 2-year-old daughter in March.
Tiffany Lopez is seeking to be released on $100,000 bail on charges stemming from the death of her daughter, Kamilah Russell on March 9. However, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Morris Jacobson said he's concerned that Lopez has a history of losing her temper, mentioning her Dec. 24 arrest on child endangerment charges in San Mateo.
Noting that Lopez has an 8-month-old daughter and is five months pregnant with another child, Jacobson told Lopez's attorney, Lindsay Horstman, "My issue is that if she (Lopez) loses her temper and becomes violent she might kill a child, which is the allegation here (in the death of Kamilah)."
Jacobson said, "Part of having young children is having levels of frustration and in two events she apparently crossed the line so she may be extraordinarily dangerous to children."
"I'm worried," the judge said.
Lopez currently is being held without bail at the Santa Rita Jail in Dublin.
Prosecutor Erin Loback is asking that Lopez's bail be set at $2.5 million, which is the bail schedule for murder charges.
Jacobson postponed ruling on the bail motion until next Monday because he wants to get the police report on the San Mateo incident so he can get more information about what happened there.
Oakland police spokesman Jeff Thomason said police received a 911 call at 4:30 p.m. March 9 reporting that Kamilah wasn't breathing. Kamilah was with Lopez at the apartment in the 2800 block of High Street where they lived with Russell's father, Joseph Russell Jr., who wasn't at home at the time.
Kamilah was taken to Children's Hospital in Oakland, where she was pronounced dead at 5:35 p.m. that day.
Lopez, who had moved to Oakland from San Mateo about three weeks earlier, was arrested at 2:03 a.m. the following morning after being interviewed by police, according to Thomason.
According to San Mateo County Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe, Lopez faces two counts of misdemeanor child endangerment and one count of misdemeanor interfering with a police officer during the performance of his duties in connection with the incident in San Mateo on Dec. 24.
Wagstaffe said the alleged victims in the incident were Lopez's 11-year-old brother and the daughter who was 4 months old at the time and is now 8 months old.
Jacobson said a preliminary report indicates that Lopez's brother suffered a broken arm in the incident but Horstman said she doesn't believe that was the case.
Horstman said Lopez faces a charge of interfering with a police officer because an officer was trying to pull Lopez's daughter away from her and "she was trying to hold onto her daughter."
Jacobson said he wants to see the police report on the incident so he knows all the facts, but he warned Horstman, "I might find her (Lopez's) release from custody might cause harm to another child."
Lopez, who was dressed in a red jail jumpsuit, cried at several points during today's hearing, particularly when the details of the two incidents were discussed.
Her father, grandmother and several other family members attended the hearing.

OAKLAND -- A woman with a history of child abuse, who suffocated her 2-year-old daughter to death two years ago, will be sent to prison for 15 years to life after agreeing to a plea deal this week in which she was found guilty of second-degree murder.
Tiffany Lopez, 21, was charged with murder in March 2010 for killing her daughter, Kamilah Russell, at an apartment she shared with Kamilah's father, Joseph Russell Jr., in the 2800 block of High Street.
Lopez initially told police that the killing was an accident that occurred after she sat on her child during a game of hide-and-seek. Lopez said she didn't realize her daughter was hiding under a couch cushion, and she accidentally sat on her.
