"Newborn" missing? dead? 15 yo Mom is not "totally honest" - (2010) - Lathrop CA
Lathrop CA ---- Investigators from the San Joaquin County Sheriff's
Department searched a landfill Tuesday and Wednesday for any signs of a
newborn baby who may have been dumped there earlier this week.
Sheriff's spokesman Les Garcia said a 15-year-old girl from Lathrop
gave birth to the baby Tuesday, and initially told people she'd given
the baby to a friend. After that story couldn't be confirmed, the girl
then told investigators she'd put the baby in the garbage.
Although Garcia said the girl has since changed her story and has
"not been totally honest with us," the Forward Landfill near the
Stockton Metropolitan Airport was being searched anyway.
According to landfill officials and Garcia, investigators finished
their search by mid-afternoon Wednesday and there were plans to
interview the young mother yet again.
Garcia used the incident to remind others that unwanted babies can be
taken to locations where they'll be cared for.
"You can drop them off at a firehouse or hospitals, no questions
asked. The main importance is the health of the child and the mother
that just gave birth," Garcia said.
Stockton Fire Department Battalion Chief Ed Rodriguez agreed. "We
don't take information. We take the baby. If she (the mother) needs
medical care...we'll certainly provide that, but our main concern is the
baby," he said.
Residents in the Lathrop neighborhood where the baby was born reacted
with shock and sadness. "It is heartbreaking to hear something like
that, because there's so much help out there to turn in their babies,"
said Mario Martinez. "If they don't want them, they can turn them in at a
fire station, they can turn them in at a hospital," Martinez said.
Garcia said investigators couldn't determine where the baby was
Wednesday evening. "We don't know if the baby is alive or if the baby is
not alive. So we're doing everything possible to locate the child," he
said.

Sheriff's deputies have left a Lathrop home for the day after
spending several hours searching the backyard and inside for a newborn
baby who has been missing for several days.
Deputies left with some filled plastic bags. No one said what
deputies recovered.
Les Garcia with the San Joaquin County's Sheriff's
Department said cadaver dogs brought to the home on Aries Place in
Lathrop searched the yard and found no sign of the infant, who was
believed to have been born earlier this week to a 15-year-old teen who
lives at the home. A search warrant was served as police moved their
search inside the home around 4 p.m. Friday, Garcia said.
Garcia said investigators didn't have any information
suggesting the baby was buried on the property or inside the home, but
it was the next step in an investigation.
San Joaquin County Sheriff's deputies were at the Forward
Landfill south of Stockton Tuesday and Wednesday, acting on information
there might be a baby there. Two days of searching did not turn up the
child.
Garcia described the girl as "uncooperative" with the
investigation.

Lathrop Baby: Search Continues At Landfill As Hope Fades
Ben Deci
FOX40 News
April 8, 2010Time is running out for San Joaquin County Deputies trying to find a new
born baby abandoned by the infant's 15-year-old mother in Lathrop.
They had been focusing their efforts in a San Joaquin County landfill,
but turned up nothing. All they will say now is that they're actively
searching, but won't tell us where.
Spoke to teens and doctors about the prognosis for the newborn and how
young adults deal with this kind of predicament.
As we enter day three since the child was born, Doctors at UC Davis
Medical Center say we are passing the horizon of hope that the baby, if
abandoned, could survive on its own.
Police are still struggling to find the child, and as they do, local
teens are struggling with the issues this case brings-up.
UC Davis Med Center. Neonatal intensive care unit. Here they know
exactly what a newborn needs.
"The ideal would be for the baby to feed a couple hours after birth,"
says pediatrician Dr. Mark Underwood.
That's to keep the child hydrated and to keep up blood sugar levels.
It's something they pay close attention to in Neonatal, where they care
for a lot of preemies. But Dr. Mark Underwood says a full-term newborn
is surprisingly resilient. A baby could survive one, even two days.
Even in an atmosphere as harsh and filthy as a land-fill. But now police
don't think the missing infant ever wound-up there at all.
"My cousin... she was pregnant and didn't want to tell her mom. She was
confused. She was 16," remembers Lisette Aguilar. At 13, she is a local
youth already facing adult choices herself.
"I really do trust my parents and I know they would, like, understand me
when I tell them. But I think they would get mad," Aguilar said.
"I think if it was an issue for her she would be able to forward and
have a rational talk about what she wanted to do. I hope so," says
Lisette's step-mother Cindy.
Meanwhile, as hope is fading for "Baby Lathrop," police haven't been
able to have that successful conversation with the child 15-year-old
mother. And time may be running out.
"Dehydration in a newborn will take effect in the first hours or days.
Heart rate will be fast. And then the baby will get sort of lethargic,"
Dr. Underwood said. "Mouth and tongue will be dry. Then the baby will be
unresponsive and... just die."
UC Davis Doctors say if there is a miracle and the child is found,
abandoned but alive, they would first run a tube into its lungs to
establish clear breathing. They would then give him or her fluids to
bring up those blood sugar and hydration levels.
That's the medicine. Now, we wait for the miracle.

The new thing is lie lie lie, then clam up. Casey taught a lot of girls and women how to play the murder the baby game.
It seems to be working for them just as it did for her.
I hope this precious new life did not suffer.
