The woman accused of killing her eight-day old baby told investigators
that she killed her baby and that she didn’t want to burden her family.
Michelle Marie Vasquez, 34, was arrested and charged with murder
Friday night after deputies found her with her dead infant in a wooded
area in the 5800 block of Congress Street, just north of Gulf Breeze
Parkway in Midway in south Santa Rosa County. She is being
held in the Santa Rosa County jail with no bond. In a
report released today, Vasquez told investigators that she left her
mother’s house in the 5800 block of Congress Street in Gulf Breeze
Thursday because she was a burden. She fled to a wooded area near the
house.“Michelle stated that she left her mother’s
residence because she felt that she didn’t belong there,” deputy Scott
Zohn said in the report.Vasquez said that she held her
baby Madison Florez “really tight” to comfort the newborn child.Zohn
asked if Vasquez knew what would happen if she held a baby too tight.“Die,”
she answered.Madison was born April 8. The
investigation began Friday morning when the infant’s grandmother
contacted the Sheriff’s Office to report that Vasquez and her baby were
missing, Haines said. The grandmother said Vasquez had been
living with her for the past week, but she had not seen Vasquez nor the
infant since Thursday morning.Vasquez disappeared
Thursday with her child. The grandmother didn’t hear from her daughter
until the next day.About 6 p.m. Friday, the grandmother
was contacted by Vasquez, who said she and the infant were in a wooded
area near the grandmother’s home, the Sheriff’s Office said. “Michelle
told her that she was in the woods because she was causing too many
problems for everyone and that she thought she would be dead by now,”
the report says. The mother encouraged her to come back to
the house and to bring the baby.“You do not want to see
the baby right now because she is dead,” Vasquez told her mother,
according to the arrest report.Deputies went with the
grandfather to the location and found Vasquez with the dead infant,
Haines said.Vasquez told the deputies that she killed her
baby, the report says.“I suffocated her,” she said,
according to the report. “I killed my baby.”Investigators
asked Vasquez’s mother if her daughter suffered from postpartum
depression. The mother said that her daughter seemed fine. The
report also says that Vasquez has a second child, a 2-year-old.

Friday night, investigators say they found Michelle Vasquez and her
eight day old baby in the woods in a Gulf Breeze neighborhood. In a
police report, the mother told investigators she suffocated the baby.
Michelle Vasquez, 34, stood in front of a judge Monday afternoon on a
violation of probation charge. But, she has been in jail since Friday,
charged with an open count of murder. Investigators say she
killed her eight day old daughter in the woods across from her parents'
home. According to the investigators report, when Vasquez walked out of
the woods, she said, "I suffocated her." Investigators believe
the infant, named Madison Marie, had been dead for some time. "I
can't fathom anybody doing anything like that to a child," one neighbor,
Sue Smith said. Vasquez had been staying at her parents' house.
She told investigators she left because she felt she didn't belong there
so she took the baby into the woods. She told them she held onto it
tightly and at some point the child died. Vasquez told
investigators she wanted to die with her baby. Investigators say
Vasquez never called for help, even after the child died. Now, Vasquez
is in the Santa Rosa County Jail without bond. Vasquez also has a
two-year-old child. She will remain in jail without bond for a
violation of probation charge, along with no bond on her murder charge.
Next time she's set to be in court is May 6.

Michelle Marie Vasquez has been indicted with first-degree
premeditated murder and aggravated child abuse in the death of her
8-day-old baby.
Vasquez, 34, was arrested April 16 after she came out of the woods
across from her home on Congress Street in the Midway community west of
Navarre and told lawmen, “I suffocated her,” according to reports.
A Santa Rosa County grand jury returned the indictment Monday,
according to a news release from the state attorney’s office.
According to reports, after finding Vasquez a day after a missing
person report was filed for her, sheriff’s deputies “crawled through the
woods,” until they found the body of the deceased newborn, Madison
Marie Florez.
The child was lying on the ground, wrapped in a blanket.
“Madison was already cold to the touch and appeared to be deceased
for some time,” investigators reported.
Vasquez told investigators that Madison had been alive when she
decided “that she wanted to live on the streets” and had taken the child
into the woods with her, according to reports.
Vasquez couldn’t discuss what had happened in the woods, but did tell
officers “at one point, she held Madison really tight to comfort her.”
Vasquez will be arraigned May 12 in Milton, according to the state
attorney’s office.

MADISON FLORES - 1 Week (2010) - Gulf Breeze (Panhandle) FL
MILTON — A jury deliberated for
about two hours Wednesday night before finding Michelle Marie Vasquez
guilty of murder in the death of her week-old daughter.
The trial began Monday.
Vasquez, 35, was charged with suffocating her daughter, Madison
Flores, in the woods across from her mother’s house on Congress Street
in Gulf Breeze last year.
Vasquez went missing April 15. When she emerged from the woods the next day, she told her mother the baby was dead.
Santa Rosa County sheriff’s deputies found the baby’s body wrapped in a blanket in the woods.
Vasquez’s defense attorney, Ken Brooks, argued that the suffocation could have been accidental.
Assistant State Attorney Bobby Elmore, who prosecuted the case, said
Vasquez’s first statement as she came out of the woods that day was "I
suffocated her."
She made statements during interviews such as "I thought we would die together," Elmore said after the verdict.
“I think that made it clear that it was premeditated,” he said.
The Medical Examiner’s Office also reported that the infant was intentionally suffocated, he said.
The jury found Vasquez guilty of murder and aggravated child abuse.
She faces a mandatory life sentence for the murder charge and will be
sentenced Oct. 18 on the aggravated child abuse charge by Circuit Judge
David Rimmer.

MILTON — A Gulf Breeze mother convicted of killing her week-old baby was sentenced Tuesday to life in prison.
Michelle Vasquez, 35, was convicted of murder after a two-day trial
in September. The jury also found her guilty of aggravated child abuse
and violation of her probation for grand theft auto, according to
Assistant State Attorney Bobby Elmore.
Vasquez was arrested on April 16, 2010, after Santa Rosa County
sheriff’s deputies found her with the dead infant in a wooded thicket.
Elmore said Vasquez took her daughter, Madison Flores, into a wooded
area behind her mother’s home where she had been staying and smothered
her. Vasquez’s mother alerted deputies to her location after Vasquez
called her.
Circuit Judge David Rimmer also sentenced Vasquez to another 35 years for her other convictions, Elmore said.
