ORLANDO,Fla. --
Perry took the bench on Friday morning and assumed
firm control of the case.With lawyers on both
sides displaying
their best behavior, and Casey Anthony mostly
stone-faced, Perry
made his first order of business setting the defense
team's budget
hearing for Thursday.During the following week,
he'll rule on the
big question about where the murder trial will be
held.Because of
cost concerns, the signal he sent on Friday was
that it would remain
in Orange County.Perry said he wanted to
move the start date of the
trial up, if possible, but he reluctantly
kept it as scheduled on
May 9, 2011.Perry said he plans to keep
things moving and promised
status hearings every 45 days to make sure
everybody is on track. He
even offered to have the Orange County
Sheriff's Office help make
sure witnesses scheduled for depositions make
it there with no
excuses.One lighthearted moment came when
prosecutor Linda Drane
Burdick told the judge she had a conflict with
one of his hearing
dates because she was slated for jury duty."You
may be excused,"
Perry said.Anthony's defense team also filed a
motion objecting to
Judge Stan Strickland's comments when he took
himself off the case.

Chief Judge Belvin
Perry, Jr. said the jury in the case likely will
not come from Orange
County, but he doesn't plan to move the trial
either.

good spirits as she
smiled while talking to Baez (images| video)
before Orange County Chief Judge Belvin Perry arrived in the courtroom.
From there on she looked more serious and Judge Perry quickly proved he
will not put up with nonsense and is ready to move the case against
Casey
full speed ahead.Judge Perry took over the over the case
earlier
this month after Judge Stan Strickland recused himself. Friday,
Judge
Perry talked in some detail about a change of venue, how long the
trial
could last and said that the jury could be sequestered. The judge
said
he may sequester the jurors and not let them have any contact with
friends
and relatives, televisions or newspapers during the trial. If he

sequesters the jury, he likely will conduct the trial on weekdays and
some
weekend days to give jurors something to occupy their time."It
is
no secret that this case has received widespread publicity," Perry
said.
"The only way ... to make sure that they are no infected or
polluted
during this proceeding is to sequester them."

The trial, scheduled to begin
May, 9 2011, is
expected to last between four and six weeks. Another
week will be needed
for the sentencing phase if there's a
conviction, according to
authorities.Casey will stand trial for
killing her daughter
Caylee and Judge Perry is clearly ready to get
the show on the road and,
with that, he discussed moving the trial
up a week but decided to leave
it where it is for now, May 9, 2011,
but made it clear that date will
not be extended.“I would like to do
it sooner, but it looks like
ya’ll have agreed on something. My
only concern is that, as you know,
under our system of laws, the
adversary system of justice is memory
dependent and, unfortunately,
memories deteriorate over a period of
time,” Judge Perry said. “I
will think about it. I’m inclined to stick
to the same schedule, but
once we do that I will enter an order and you
will be stuck with
it.”Judge Perry gave prosecutors and defense
attorneys strict orders
to get their evidence and witnesses in order.
There are more than
250 witnesses who could be called to testify for the
state alone;
only 36 have been deposed so far.Prosecutors said
they believe some
out-of-state witnesses are stonewalling“I'm
quite sure that Sheriff
Jerry Demings will aid us in going to make those
witnesses available
for deposition,” Judge Perry said.The judge
also took issue with
the fact the defense still hasn't talked to the
Justice
Administration Commission to go over how much the case will cost

taxpayers.“I got time next week and the following week. That
needs
to be done like yesterday,” Judge Perry said.The judge said
there
will be regular status hearings on the case."As you know,
we will
have a status hearing every 45 days to make sure you are
following
this schedule," Judge Perry said.When Judge Perry
discussed the
possibility of a change of venue he made it clear he
prefers to
bring a jury in from another county and keep the trial in
Orange
County, in his courtroom, because it would be too expensive and
inconvenient
to house both legal teams and hundreds of witnesses
someplace else
for nearly two months.“We want Casey to have a
fair trial. We love
the knowledge Judge Perry brings to the bench,” Jose
Baez said after
the hearing (watch full

afterward she felt the
proceedings were more respectful and
organized with Judge Perry.“It
was a lot better being in court
today,” Cindy said (watch

interview). “It was respectful. Everybody was much
more
respectful. It was good.”Judge Perry has been on the bench in
Central
Florida for 21 years. He is the go-to judge for cases causing a
problem
for the court."He sets a tone of authority in his
courtroom. No one
ever questions who's in charge once you walk into
Judge Perry's
courtroom," WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said.Judge
Perry has
overseen tough cases before. He took over the case involving a

homeless man's murder, because another judge allowed the suspect to get
out of jail on bond. Also, last year, he sent two men to prison for
life
when a jury found them guilty for murdering Orlando Police Officer
Al
Gordon.

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35) - On Friday
attorneys on both sides of the Casey Anthony case met with the new
judge in charge. The hearing was merely a formality. Judge Belvin
Perry got acquainted with the case’s key players and discussed
deadlines, including the deposition of all witnesses, as well as
deadlines for future motions. Another hearing will be held on May
6th about the defense team budget. Additional hearings will be held on
May 11th and 12th for defense death penalty motions. FOX 35
Reporter Holly Bristow will have full reports during FOX 35 News a 5PM
and 6PM.

Judge Belvin Perry took over the case when Judge Stan
Strickland recused himself. Judge Perry wanted the attorneys on
both sides to know he has strict rules and he expects them to be
followed. An order went out to both prosecutors and Anthony’s defense
attorneys to make sure the rules are clear. Counsel has to stand when
court is opened and adjourned. And disparaging personal remarks won't be
tolerated. Judge Perry is also mandating deadlines for new discovery
and pushing to move past any unresolved motions. The order also says the
attorneys must refer to everyone by their last names only, ask
permission before approaching the bench, and they can't make gestures or
facial expressions that show any disapproval while witnesses are
testifying.

Since the Caylee Anthony case first broke nearly two years ago,
we've seen investigators haul vacuum cleaner after vacuum cleaner out of
the Anthony's home. Casey Anthony's mom, Cindy, told deputies she
cleaned Casey's car when it came back from the tow yard because it
smelled so bad. In Friday's discovery we learn that investigators tore
apart four vacuum cleaners taken into evidence. FBI lab notes
show the vacuums were examined for human hair with characteristics of
human decomposition, but, none were found. That's good for Casey
Anthony's defense, something her attorneys will likely point out when

Fla. -- Casey Anthony on Friday made her first appearance
before a new judge, who made it clear that her trial will be held in
Orange County although the jury may be chosen elsewhere.

case-management hearing in courtroom 23 at the Orange County Courthouse,
discussing several items concerning Anthony's murder case.Perry
set a closed-door hearing on defense costs, which will be paid for by
taxpayers, for May 6; several other open-court hearings will be held the
following week.Later in the hearing, Perry said that the May 9,
2011, scheduled start date for Anthony's murder trial will likely
remain.Perry also discussed a possible change of venue.The
state said it will not oppose most of the defense motion for a change
of venue, but that only means a jury would be chosen in another Florida
city. The jurors would then be brought back to Orange County for the
trial, which attorneys predicted could take up to nine weeks.Although
a ruling has not been made on the change of venue, Perry indicated that
if it happens, the jury would likely be sequestered in a hotel room."It's

death of her daughter, Caylee Anthony.Caylee was 2 years old when
she was reported missing in July 2008. Her remains were found in
December 2008 in a wooded area near the Anthony family's east Orange
County home.Anthony, who has pleaded not guilty, is being held at
the Orange County Jail on no bond.

Perry took over the case after Judge Stan Strickland recused
himself at the request of Anthony’s lawyers.The defense said
Strickland had an inappropriate
discussion with a blogger covering the case.Some analysts,
however, said Strickland’s replacement could be more difficult to deal
with as they try to defend Casey against charges of murdering her
2-year-old daughter, Caylee.Analysts had called Perry a
“no-nonsense” judge, and that was reflected in the first court hearing
in the case.The judge was all about the calendar, pushing both
the prosecution and defense to be ready for trial.At one point,
when Perry was talking to defense attorney Jose Baez about his budget
for the Justice Administrative Commission to pay for Casey’s discovery
process, he said: “That needed to be done, like, yesterday.”Perry
set the hearing for May 6, then started pressing the attorneys to get
all their pending motions resolved, and until May 10 to prepare them for
his decision.Both sides said they had a lot to do -- for
example, the state trying to get depositions from as many as 250
witnesses.Perry said he wants a schedule of when they will
take depositions. Anyone who misses a set deadline could be held in
contempt of court.“I will not be taking the excuse, ‘They don’t
show up; we need a delay.’ Give them a courtesy call, and if we need
him, I’m sure the sheriff, Jerry Demings, will be helpful in making
those witnesses available,” Perry said.At one point, a prosecutor
said she might not be able to make a hearing, because she was scheduled
for jury duty in Orange County.Perry said he knows people, and
he’s pretty sure he could get her out of it.Attorneys on both
sides were forced to talk about things in open court they may not have
