A Fresno toddler still at the hospital, in critical condition, after police say his own mother stabbed
him repeatedly.
Now police are trying to find the answer to the question… why?
The mother is still in custody, but she's not in jail.
Police can put suspects on a 72-hour mental hold, so a psychiatrist
can evaluate them for a possible mental disorder.
"As a society in general, we are behaving worse than we were 10-15
years ago. As that trend continues, we'll see more aggressive behavior,
usually from folks we don't expect to hear it from," said marriage and
family therapist Paul Mavrogeorge.
Relatives describe 30-year-old Vanessa Rincon as a single mother of two.
Stress and postpartum depression are common issues for many moms.
"A lot of times it's really easy to get scared and think ‘Ohmigosh
I'm going to end up like one of these bad moms that's going to kill
their kid.' The parents who are thinking that usually aren't the ones
who are going to do it," said Mavrogeorge.
He says the ones who will hurt their children, have a history of
violence or abuse or are abusing drugs. A possibility in the case of
3-year-old Noah Rincon… who's mother allegedly confessed to police, that
she stabbed him more than a dozen times and pushed him down the stairs.
"If we see those things going on, and mom is stressed out and
overwhelmed, that's something we need to be concerned about, that's when
we need to step in and intervene," said Mavrogeorge.
He says meth in particular can cause violent and erratic behavior, even psychosis.
"The lesson we can learn, if you have a family member that is out of
control and they are not responding to you, you need to make contact
with people that can help," said Mavrogeorge.
Police aren't confirming what Vanessa Rincon's status is or whether
she had drugs in her system, but say they expect to file criminal
charges against her in the next couple of days.
At the very least, Rincon is expected to be charged with attempted murder.

Re: NOAH RINCON - 3 yo (2010) - Fresno CA
The Fresno County District Attorney's Office filed
felony charges late Thursday afternoon against the woman who admitted
stabbing and critically injuring her own 3-year-old son.
Vanessa Rincon, 30, is accused of attempted willful,
deliberate premeditated murder against Noah Rincon.
She also is accused of corporal injury to a child.
Police Chief Jerry Dyer said the little boy had been
stabbed 15 to 20 times, and a witness said he saw Rincon push
the little boy down the stairs of their two-story apartment complex on North Pleasant Avenue
Authorities found Rincon's other child -- a 2-month-old baby girl -- unharmed.
They also found the knife they believe was used in the attack.
After police took Rincon into custody, she was placed under a suicide watch
in a local mental institution because of certain
statements she made to police.
Rincon faces the prospect of life in prison. She makes her first court appearance Friday morning.

Fresno mom found guilty in attempted murder of 3-year-old son
Tuesday, December 13, 2011
FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- A Fresno County jury found Vanessa Rincon guilty of attempted murder and injury to a child Monday.
The trial took more than two weeks, but jurors needed only a few hours to decide she was guilty, and not insane.
For the first time during the trial, Rincon's family wasn't there to back her up Monday, and she broke down when the verdict came in.
Rincon was a mother overcome with guilt. The 31-year-old started crying after a jury found her guilty of an attack on her then 3-year-old son.
The boy suffered 25 stab wounds, and after the knife attack, his mother threw him down a flight of stairs, cracking his skull.
Rincon never denied the charges, and at the time, even told police not to save her son because he was possessed.
In court, she claimed her actions came during a psychotic break down as a result of postpartum depression and other issues. But she tested positive for methamphetamine and prosecutors argued that was a more likely explanation for Rincon's out-of-character behavior.
"A lot of people believe substance abuse is a victimless crime, but here, some lives have been destroyed, a family has been disrupted," said prosecutor Bob Whalen.
Rincon's attack and arrest last May shocked her family, and they swooped in to take care of the boy and his infant sister. 18 months later, the entire family came to her defense in court. They didn't get the verdict they'd hoped for, but agreed with prosecutors on one good outcome from the case.
"The good news in this case is that the little boy is doing well," Whalen said. "He has recovered from these injuries."
In fact, the boy's adopted mother showed Action News recent pictures of him and he looks both healthy and happy.
Rincon is set to be sentenced in January. Prosecutors say she's facing about 25 years to life in prison.
