"Baby John" LONG - 2 Months - Henderson (S of Evansville ) KY
A two-month-old baby boy is in critical condition at a Louisville
hospital. This, after Kentucky State Police say his father shook him.
Jennifer Hayes is a mother of three and is shocked to find out her next
door neighbor is behind bars.
"I thought he seems like a really, really nice guy, doesn't seem like
it would be something that he would do," Jennifer Hayes said.
Kentucky State Police say Demond Long was arrested for abusing his
two-month-old son. Troopers believe Long shook the boy because the
infant wouldn't stop crying.
The incident happened last Tuesday. On Friday, Kentucky State Police
got a call from the hospital saying the baby's injuries looked
suspicious.
The baby boy suffered from brain trauma and was taken to Kosair
Children's Hospital in Louisville.
"It's very serious. It could've been potentially life threatening
injury especially at the young age of this child and anytime you have a
head injury no matter what your age, it's a terrible thing," Lt. Keith
Payne said.
"That's just crazy, I mean anybody that can do that is just crazy. I
mean honestly I was scared because I had seen it on TV earlier and it
kind of scared me at first because I thought, oh now I've got three
kids," Hayes said.
Troopers say the child had surgery Monday to relieve some swelling on
the brain. They say his condition has improved.
"I think people sometimes just lose control with their anger and for
various reasons, people have all kinds of reasons, there's no excuse
for it, but people use excuses as far as work, stress at home, anger,"
Lt. Payne said.
The investigation is on-going, and troopers are still talking with other
people about what happened to a young little boy.
Long is being held in the Henderson County Jail on two counts of
criminal abuse to the first degree. If the child doesn't make it,
troopers say the charge could be upgraded to a murder charge.
