THADDEUS MAURICE CALVARY - 15 yo - Charleston SC
Thaddeus Maurice Calvary, a St. Andrews Middle School eighth-grader,
died Monday after being found unconscious in a school bathroom, the
boy's father said.
A report from the Charleston Police Department, which doesn't name
Calvary because he is a juvenile, said EMS took the boy to Bon Secours
St. Francis Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The boy's father, Thaddeus Calvary, confirmed that the child found in
the school bathroom was his 15-year-old son.
His son, who lived with his paternal grandmother, had not been ill,
the elder Calvary said.
Aurvella Calvary, the boy's stepmother, said her stepson is the child
of her husband and Sonya Anderson. She also said her stepson appeared
to be in good health and that he had played basketball Sunday.
Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelly Myers said Monday evening that
she had not yet determined the cause of death. An autopsy will be
conducted today, she said.
St. Andrews Middle School was placed on temporary lockdown as a
precaution after the boy was found, and police and extra district staff
were at the scene, said Elliot Smalley, Charleston County School
District deputy of strategic planning and communication. Extra
counselors and support staff will be at the school for the remainder of
the week to assist students and faculty, he said.
"Our deepest condolences go out to the family and to the St. Andrews
Middle School community," Smalley said.

Cause of death of St. Andrews student still not determined

St. Andrews Middle School Principal Benjamin Bragg got choked up
when he talked about his student Thaddeus Maurice Calvary, who died
Monday after being found unconscious in a school bathroom.
"He was a well-behaved kid with a bright future ahead of him," he
said of the eighth-grader. Thaddeus, 15, was a member of Bragg's
leadership team, loved sports, and was popular among students and staff
members.

Students at St. Andrews Middle were supposed to begin taking the
standardized PASS test Tuesday, Bragg said, but school officials were
able to put that off until Thursday to give students some time to grieve
the loss of their classmate.
Charleston County Deputy Coroner Kelly Myers said she has not yet
determined the cause of death. There was no trauma to Thaddeus's body,
and he hadn't suffered any injuries, she said. But she needs to do
microscopic and toxicology tests, she said, and it could take four to
eight week to get the results.
Bragg said school leaders gave students an extended homeroom period
Tuesday to help them cope with the tragedy. And the Charleston County
School District sent a crisis team to the school to help students. Some
members of that team will remain at the school until the end of the
week.
Groups of students made posters and cards for the Calvary family,
Bragg said.
The school will hold some kind of memorial service, he said, but
plans for the event are not yet complete. And students and staff members
are planning to plant a Magnolia tree and place a brick nameplate on
the school's grounds in memory of Thaddeus.
"He always had a smile," Bragg said. "He always came to school. He
was an all-around great kid, and he's going to be missed."
