A 4-month-old girl was returned safely to
her mother after her father was accused of taking her Wednesday, May 12, triggering an
Amber Alert.
The incident started just after 2 p.m., when Michael J. Howard, 29,
reportedly showed up at the mother’s house, 573 Greenwood Court, in violation of a
court ordered protection order.
The mother called 911 and Howard took the baby before police arrived,
according to New Lebanon police Chief Rick Daulton.
Police were in contact with Howard as he drove around with the infant,
Daulton said, and police issued the Amber Alert after Howard became agitated
and threatened to leave the state with the baby.
He eventually agreed to meet a friend of the baby’s mother, and the
woman drove him and the infant back to New Lebanon where he was taken into custody.
Howard is being charged with violating a protection order and disruption
of public service. Police will meet with prosecutors Thursday about more charges.
