Canoga Park CA ---- A 35-year-old woman and her 5-year-old daughter were
found stabbed to death of Friday in a home in Canoga Park, police said.
The bodies were discovered around 1:30 p.m. at a residence in the
6900 block of Remmet Avenue, near Sherman Way, said Officer Gregory Baek
of the Los Angeles Police Department. "Los Angeles firefighters
responded to the location and found the two dead," Baek said. "Each had
apparent knife wounds and cutting wounds." Few details were
immediately available, but Baek did say the killing was not
gang-related.

Los Angeles police today
identified one of the two victims of a double murder in Canoga Park as
Martha Carmona, 21, and they are still looking into the fatal stabbing
attack against her and her six-year-old daughter.
The woman's
husband was interviewed by detectives after the bodies were found, but
he was not taken into custody, police said today.
The victims'
bodies were discovered around 1:30 p.m. Friday at a small house at 6930
Remmet Ave., near Canoga and Hart avenues in the northwestern end of the
San Fernando Valley.
The little girl's name was not released by
police today.
The deaths were reported as two homicides by
stabbing, a coroner's investigator said. Police detectives and coroner's
investigators remained at the death scene early today, 12 hours after
the bodies were discovered, officials with both agencies said.
“Los
Angeles firefighters responded to the location and found the two dead,”
Officer Gregory Baek of the police department's Media Relations Section
said Friday afternoon. “Each had apparent knife wounds and cutting
wounds.”
Coroner's investigators were delayed in going into the
house because they had to get a search warrant, a spokesman for the
Department of Coroner said today.
Police originally told
reporters the woman was 35 and her daughter was 5 years old. They are
still not sure if the husband was the father of the child.
The killings were not
gang-related, Baek said, but did not provide an explanation. No
information was available about a suspect or suspects, said Lt. Orlando
Moreno of the Los Angeles Police Department's Topanga Station.
“Everything
is open,” Moreno said late Friday. “Detectives are looking at
everything.”
The neighborhood where the stabbing deaths were
discovered is about two blocks east of Canoga Park High School.

The uncle of a 21-year-old woman who was stabbed to death, along with

At a news conference this
afternoon, Los Angeles police Detective Dave Peteque identified the
suspect as 51-year-old Manuel Carmona, who was taken into custody
Tuesday at his home in North Hills. Carmona is scheduled to be
arraigned Thursday in Van Nuys Superior Court on two counts of murder in
the May 14 deaths of Martha Carmona and her daughter, Valeri Camacho.
The murder charges include the special circumstance allegation of
multiple murders, along with an allegation that he personally used a
knife in the commission of the crimes. Prosecutors will decide
later in the case whether to seek a death sentence against the
defendant. "There was not one item that pointed us to Manuel,"
Peteque said, adding that detectives conducted more than 100 interviews
and it was "basically a puzzle put together piece by piece, with the
entire investigation leading us to Manuel." The victims' bodies
were found May 14 at a small house at 6930 Remmet Ave., near Canoga and
Hart avenues. There was no word on a possible motive or the
relationship Manuel may have had with the other residents of the home.
The suspect, who is from Mexico and worked in construction, is
considered a flight risk and is being held without bail at the Van Nuys
jail facility, authorities said. The victims' bodies were found
by Los Angeles firefighters who had responded to the home, which is in a
neighborhood about two blocks east of Canoga Park High School.

Nearly three months after a 6-year-old girl and her 21-year-old mother were found stabbed in their Canoga Park home, the woman's uncle has been arrested on murder charges, officials said Wednesday.

Manuel Carmona, 51, was arrested Tuesday at his home in North Hills. He is scheduled to be arraigned Thursday on two counts of murder in the slayings of Martha Carmona and her daughter, Valeri Camacho.

"This was one of the most difficult crime scenes in my 20 years in the department that I've been to," L.A. police Detective Dave Peteque said at a news conference to announce the arrest.

"Any time a child is involved ... it's extremely difficult."

At the time of the killings, officials said, Carmona, the victims and five other relatives were living together in a small house in the 6900 block of Remmet Avenue.

Firefighters who responded to a call of a stabbing at the residence on May 14 found the bodies of Martha Carmona and her daughter.

Police said the crime scene and the subsequent investigation took an emotional toll on officers as well as on the victims' family. Martha Carmona's husband, her parents, her brother and a cousin also lived in the house.

"We were all shocked by the crime," LAPD Deputy Chief Kirk Albanese said.

Peteque said authorities conducted more than 100 interviews during the investigation, including with the victims' relatives.

Investigators declined to discuss a motive for the killings or the weapon that was used for fear of jeopardizing their case.

Carmona, who moved to North Hills after the killings, is a construction worker from Mexico who has legal residency in the U.S., police said. Authorities said they considered Carmona a flight risk, and arrested him on a no-bail warrant.

Albanese praised the detective work, which, after discovery of the bodies, included officers going over the crime scene meticulously for 36 straight hours.

VAN NUYS – The uncle and brother-in-law of a woman who with her 6-year-old daughter were stabbed to death at their Canoga Park home last year have been charged with capital murder, the District Attorney’s office announced today.

The defendants appeared in court briefly yesterday, but their arraignments have been put over until Feb. 24 in Department 100, Van Nuys Superior Court. Both are in custody without bail.

Charged in case No. LA065484 are Manuel Carmona, 51 (dob 6-12-1959), and Mario Estrada Ochoa, 32 (dob 2-25-1978). The men are charged with two counts of murder with the special circumstance of multiple murders. Although filed as a capital case, a decision on whether to seek the death penalty against either or both defendants will not be made until the case moves closer to trial.

The adult victim, identified in the complaint as Martha C., 21, and her daughter, Valeri C., were found dead in the family home on May 14, 2010, by the woman’s husband. Both had been stabbed to death, authorities said.

Los Angeles police detectives conducted an extensive investigation that led to the filing of a case against Carmona on July 6, 2010. A preliminary hearing had not yet been scheduled.

Police detectives continued their investigation, leading to the arrest of Ochoa and an amended criminal complaint filed yesterday.

It was alleged in the complaint that Carmona, Martha’s uncle and Valeri’s great-uncle, and Ochoa, the dead woman’s brother-in-law and the little girl’s uncle, used a knife during commission of the crimes.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorneys Mari Estrella and Jodi Taksar of the Family Violence Division.

DA Seeking Death Penalty In Canoga Park Double Murder

VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles District Attorney will pursue the death penalty against a man charged in the fatal stabbings of a Canoga Park woman and her six-year-old daughter.

Mario Estrada Ochoa, 36, is awaiting trial for the May 14, 2010, killings of his sister-in-law, Martha Carmona, and her daughter, Valerie Camacho, who had been found dead by Carmona’s husband in the family home in the 6900 block of Remmet Avenue, near Canoga and Hart avenues.

Ochoa’s murder charges include the special circumstance allegation of multiple murders.

City News Service reports he is due back in court for a pretrial hearing April 30.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy District Attorney Beth Silverman.
