DaLEON WILLIAMS - 2 Months - Houston TX
Houston Police homicide detectives are investigating the death of a
two-month-old boy. DaLeon Williams' mother, Nikita Watson, says
she doesn't know what happened to her baby. The Harris County
Medical Examiner's Office lists his cause of death as pending, but HPD
says an autopsy revealed "internal injuries not consistent with a natural death."
Child Protective Services removed Watson's
one-year-old son and a 10-year-old child living in the home until CPS
knows what happened to the infant.
"At this time we don't know who caused these injuries, but these were inflicted. This is not
something that happened by accident," said Estella Olguin, CPS spokeswoman.
On June 9th, Watson says her son was acting
normal. She fed him, changed his diaper and put him down for his nap.
Watson says the baby's father was the last to check on him before
leaving the house. When Watson peeked into the baby's room, she
found DeLeon covered in vomit and not breathing.
"When I picked him up I already knew that he had passed," she said.
HPD couldn't find any visible injuries.
"We don't harm children," said Camille Watson, the baby's grandmother.
The next day CPS says an autopsy revealed signs of abuse. "He had old fractures on
both sides of his ribs, and he also had a subdural hemotoma which is
indicative of shaken baby syndrome. Usually whatever caused that injury
the onset of symptoms, like becoming unresponsive and then dying,
happens pretty quickly," said Olguin.
The family says DeLeon was in a car accident four days before his death. He was restrained in a
car seat but never seen by a doctor.
"I do believe, had paramedics after the accident transferred the baby to a hospital for a
simple MRI these injuries would have been discovered. This baby would
still possibly be alive," said community activist Quannel X.
Watson says she's waiting for answers from police and CPS.
"I've been a mother first and always a mother first. I'm going to always take care of
my kids and never do anything to hurt them," she said.
HPD is still investigating and have not named any suspects in the baby's death.
