A man
and woman are in custody and five children have been removed from
their Apple Valley home after a 2-year-old boy in their care was
admitted to a Loma Linda hospital in critical condition. Devon Durrull Kirk and Thursday Denise Young, both 24, were
arrested Wednesday at their home and booked into the West Valley
Detention Center in Rancho Cucamonga on suspicion of child abuse.
The 2-year-old was admitted to Loma Linda
University Children's Hospital suffering from a skull fracture,
chronic brain injuries, and abdominal injuries requiring surgery,
said sheriff's Detective Roxanne Bessinger, of the Crimes
Against Children Detail. The child remained on life support
Thursday. His brother, 3, and sister, 4, show
signs of chronic abuse, but did not have any injuries that
required immediate treatment, Bessinger said. The three siblings
were in foster care in the home, she said. Kirk
and Young appear to have been fostering children since March
through the Joshua Family Foster Agency, Bessinger said. Clair Murray,
owner the agency, refused to comment until she had spoken with an
attorney. The couple's two biological
daughters, ages 3 and 1, were placed with the county Department
of Children and Family Services, the detective said.
Jail records indicate that Kirk's bail on the abuse charge
was set at $100,000, but authorities cannot release him because
of several outstanding, unrelated warrants for an arrest in Los
Angeles County. Young's bail was set at $200,000
