Police in Roanoke are looking for an 18-year-old woman who has been
missing since 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Cara Marie Holley was last seen in her Roanoke home and was reported
missing by a family member whom she was supposed to meet on Thursday,
Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson said.


Holley had been driving a white 2011 Kia Sorento, Johnson said. She
is about 5 feet 3 inches tall, weighs about 130 pounds, has brown hair
and hazel eyes and is missing her left arm below the elbow. She was last
seen wearing a bright yellow shirt, brown shorts and flip flops.
Family members told police it's unusual for Holley to leave without
advising relatives or friends, Johnson said.
Police are asking anyone with information on Holley or the SUV she
was driving to call 911.

A Roanoke teenager who had been missing since Wednesday was slain and
her body was found in Franklin County, Roanoke County police said today.
A 21-year-old man was charged with first-degree murder.

Cara
Marie Holley, 18, who lived with her family in Roanoke, was reported
missing by a family member, whom she was supposed to meet on Thursday,
said Roanoke police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson. Police believe she was
killed in Roanoke County and are searching an area near Bandy Road for
evidence, said Lt. Chuck Mason.

Carey Shane Padgett, 21, was
charged with first-degree murder and abduction by force, according to
booking records at the Roanoke County-Salem Jail. Padgett is scheduled
to be arraigned on those charges Monday. He is being held without bond.

A night shift worker with a temper that led to raging outbursts was
charged with abducting and killing an 18-year-old Roanoke woman who was
his friend after police said they caught him driving the slain woman's
new SUV on Friday.
Carey Shane Padgett, 21, of Roanoke was arrested behind the wheel of
Cara Marie Holley's white 2011 Kia Sorento in Franklin County, the day
after a family member reported her missing because she didn't show up
for a meeting, police said. Roanoke County police believe she was killed
on a Roanoke County farm and her body dumped in woods near Rocky Mount.
Holley, whom her friends described as caring and fun, was "good
friends" with Padgett, said Andrew Whitmire, 18.
"She just loved to be carefree and have fun," Whitmire said.
"Whenever someone was in deep, she'd help. She wouldn't talk bad about
anyone." He said Holley had been "like a sister" to him since meeting
their freshman year at Patrick Henry High School.Last year, when Whitmire and his girlfriend learned the girlfriend
was pregnant, Holley was the first to offer support, he said.
Holley had the same steady boyfriend -- not Padgett -- for years,
Whitmire said. Her boyfriend couldn't be reached Friday.
Padgett's Facebook profile says he had worked the night shift in
inventory management for Advance Auto Parts and at a Subway sandwich
shop as an assistant manager.
Those who know him said he appeared troubled for years.
"I just remember him having these crazy outbursts all the time," said
Celia Taylor, 22, of Moneta, who attended James Madison Middle School
and Patrick Henry High School with Padgett. "I just thought he was a kid
who was messed up or had problems at home."
Taylor recalled an incident at James Madison when Padgett had to be
restrained by at least one school resource officer after he threw a
chair at another student in the school's cafeteria. The officer forced
Padgett in a headlock and handcuffs, Taylor said.
"It was just another one of his outbursts," she said.
Meghan McClure, 21, of Roanoke, who said she has known Padgett since
kindergarten at Highland Park Elementary School, said he found trouble
frequently as he got older.
"He seemed to have a temper that could be switched on and off,"
McClure said. "But I never would have expected anything out of him like
this. At all."Holley was last seen at 6 p.m. Wednesday at her house, said Roanoke
police spokeswoman Aisha Johnson. She was reported missing about 4 p.m.
Thursday.
Padgett was arrested about 12:30 a.m. Friday and charged with
first-degree murder and abduction by force. He was held in the Roanoke
County-Salem Jail without bail. An arraignment was scheduled for Monday.
Roanoke County police said they expect to file more charges against
him.
Roanoke police investigating Holley's disappearance had believed that
it was suspicious and that Padgett was involved, Roanoke County police
Lt. Chuck Mason said in a statement. Mason wouldn't characterize the
relationship between Holley and Padgett.
Throughout Thursday night and Friday morning, Roanoke police worked
on the investigation. They obtained arrest warrants for Padgett charging
him with illegal use of Holley's credit card. They also determined that
Padgett was in Franklin County, and deputies there were asked to look
for Padgett and Holley's Kia, Mason said.
A Rocky Mount police officer spotted the SUV and held Padgett until
Roanoke officers arrived.
The investigation led police to Holley's body, covered with scraps of
wood and leaves in a wooded area off Crandall Drive south of Rocky
Mount. The medical examiner's office in Roanoke will determine the cause
and time of her death, Mason said.
Roanoke County police combed through a farmer's land in the 5000
block of Bandy Road early Friday morning, where they believe Holley was
slain.
Padgett was convicted of disorderly conduct in 2007 in Roanoke City
General District Court. He was ordered to serve 20 hours of community
service.

Family and friends gathered in a Roanoke
schoolyard Saturday night seeking solace and comfort, one day after a
teenage girl turned up dead.

On Thursday, a family member reported Cara
Holley missing when she didn't show up for an appointment. Clues
eventually led authorities to the teen's body in neighboring Franklin
County. Police have charged Carey Padgett with the 18-year-old's death.

More than 100 people came out to Patrick Henry High School to remember Cara Holley.

They brought photos, shirts printed with her face, and memories.

"I love my girl, and I miss her so much," said Cara's father Mike Holley.

He held his daughter's photo close as he spoke at her vigil.

"I miss my girl, and I'm just so impressed with all the people and what everybody's done," he said.

Her mother, Lisa, spoke of how Cara touched so many people.

"Cara changed the world," she said. "The world is going to be a different place without her, but it's another
place because of her, I know that."

Jacob, Cara's boyfriend of almost seven years, tried to look on the bright side.

"Let's celebrate her living, what she did forus, how nice she was how sweet how caring," he said.
"She was a breath of fresh air."

"She never said a bad word about anybody,
always thought good of people," said Cara's step mom. "If she could help
somebody she did."

"I'm going to carry on for Cara, and that's all I can do," said Mike. "That's all I can do."

A Roanoke County grand jury indicted Shane Padgett on two additional capital murder charges.
Padgett is charged with the murder of Cara Holley, 18, of Garden City, on July 7, 2010.
The grand jury indicted Padgett on two more capital murder charges involving sex crimes against Holley.
He was already charged with capital murder in commission of a robbery, and capital murder in commission of an abduction.
His trial is scheduled to begin in mid-August.

A trial date has been set for the man accused of killing a Roanoke teen. Shane Padgett is charged with capital murder in the death of Cara Holley.
Police say he choked and then beat the 18-year-old to death last July. They say he killed her for her car.
Padgett wavied his right to a speedy trial on Wednesday. His case will be heard January 23. If convicted, he could face the death penalty.

Shane Padgett Found Guilty Of Capital Murder

Salem, VA - The man accused of beating a young woman to death in 2010 with a tire iron in Roanoke County, then dumping her body in Franklin County, has been found guilty.

Shane Padgett was found guilty for the capital murder of Cara Holley in 2010.

Monday in Roanoke County Circuit Court Padgett pleaded guilty to four charges, including Capital Murder during a robbery. He also pleaded no contest to the remaining six.

A judge then found Padgett guilty of all ten charges.

The plea does not involve a plea deal, according to Cara's mother, who said the death penalty is still on the table.

Padgett will be sentenced early next year.
