A Berino, New Mexico mother claims her one-year-old son fell off a bed
and began having seizures, but Dona Ana County sheriff's investigators
say it's a case of child abuse.The baby was in a coma at
University Medical Center in El Paso as of Saturday morning.



Authorities have charged 26-year-old Erica Sigala with intentional child abuse,
resulting in death or great bodily harm.UMC contacted Dona Ana
County sheriff's officials about the boy's injuries; according to a New
Mexico forensic pediatrician, the boy showed severe brain injuries.When
asked how his mother played with Jesus, Jr., his two-year-old brother
reportedly shook a doll back and forth, according to court documents.Sheriff's
officials say this is the third case of extreme child abuse in Dona Ana

Shock waves ran through the small town of Berino, when neighbors learned
that a 1-year-old boy had been abused, possibly at the hands of his
mother earlier this month.The child, Jesus Sigala, was listed in
critical condition due to severe non accidental brain injury, Dona Ana
County domestic violence investigator Bo Nevarez said.The child’s
mother, 26-year-old, Erica Sigala, was arrested Thursday on charges of
first-degree child abuse – intentional resulting in death or great
bodily harm.Court records show that on July 5, the baby was
airlifted to an El Paso hospital after his mother called 911.Sigala
told authorities she went to take a shower and left the baby asleep on
the bed, while she took a shower. She told investigators that she heard
a loud thump while she was in the shower and when she came out the baby
was on the floor having a seizure, the criminal complaint report said.However,
doctors said the baby’s injuries were not consistent with a fall from
the bed, especially since the bed is a little more than two feet high.
Doctors said the injuries were consistent with abuse on several
occasions.“It’s scary because we don’t want that in our
neighborhood,” said Rafael Lopez, a Berino resident.Sigala also
has three other sons who are 2,3 and 5 years old. When investigators
questioned them, one of the kids used a doll to demonstrate their mother
shook their 1-year-old brother.Her other child said a belt was
used to hit the back of Jesus, according to court records.
Investigators also asked her one of her sons if anyone told them not to
talk. They said the boy answered, "my mother."
Sigala was also charged with battery against a household member in
2008, according to Nevarez.

one count of intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm.

off a respirator and breathing on his own, but he did suffer traumatic
brain injuries and will be mentally disabled for the rest of his life.Sigala
also had three other sons who are 2, 3 and 5 years old. Investigators
said the children demonstrated on a doll how their mother shook their
1-year-old brother.

A baby whose mother allegedly shook him so hard
he went into a coma just days before his first birthday will likely be
severely mentally handicapped for the rest of his life, according to the
3rd Judicial District Attorney's office. Erica Sigala was
indicted Thursday by a Dona Ana County grand jury, who formally charged
her with intentional child abuse resulting in great bodily harm, a
first-degree felony.The 26-year-old mother of four was arrested
after doctors found the blood vessels in her baby's eyes bleeding
abnormally and evidence of a large field of bleeding in the baby's
brain, indicative of repeated abuse, according to court documents.
Sigala 's other young sons, who were also taken from her custody,
indicated to police that their mother had shaken the baby, slapped him
and hit him on the back with a belt.The resulting traumatic brain
injury, or "shaken baby syndrome," left the child on a respirator and a
feeding tube, but he has since been able to begin breathing on his own
again, according to investigators.The baby has been transported to the University of New Mexico's Carrie Tingley Hospital in Albuquerque."It
does appear the child will live, but the child will be severely
mentally handicapped due to his injuries," Deputy District Attorney
James Dickens said Thursday. "Just that morning, when he got up,
everyone agreed he had been healthy and normal."He added, "We certainly hope for the best, and infants' minds are sometimes able to rewire themselves, but we don't know at this time."Sigala,
of the 100 block of Feathergrass Road in Berino, south of Las Cruces,
remains jailed at the Do a Ana County Detention Center with a $100,000
cash-only bond.Her case will now proceed in 3rd Judicial District Court.
