No bail for woman accused in son's beating death
July 20, 2010 2:30 PM
A Bronzeville woman accused of murder in the death of her toddler son told police she had been drinking when she swung him in the air and lost her grip, causing him to hit his head on a radiator, a prosecutor said in court today.
A judge ordered Doulesha Wyatt, 22, held without bail this afternoon at a bond hearing. Authorities have charged her with the death of her 21-month-old son Jaymeon, who died Sunday afternoon at Comer Children's Hospital.
Police said Jaymeon's head injuries were consistent with a beating, and an autopsy by the Cook County medical examiner's office concluded that he died of head and brain injuries due to blunt head trauma.
Wyatt sobbed uncontrollably through her hearing today before Judge James Brown as a prosecutor outlined the allegations against her.
Her husband had gone to work early Saturday, leaving her to care for Jaymeon and her two other young children by herself, said Assistant State's Atty. Laura Ayala-Gonzalez. At some point in the morning, Wyatt went to a liquor store and returned with beer and vodka, which she drank at home, the prosecutor said.
At about 11:30 a.m., she was playing with Jaymeon, raising him up in her arms and swinging him "in a circle" in the air, Ayala-Gonzalez said. Wyatt told police in a videotaped confession that she got dizzy and lost her grip on the boy.
According to her account, he flew across the room and hit his head on a radiator, the prosecutor said, and afterward, when he wouldn't stop crying, Wyatt hit him several times on the back of the head. When the boy's breath became shallow, she shook him violently, Ayala-Gonzalez said.
Jaymeon lost consciousness, and when Wyatt could not revive him, she alerted a neighbor. The boy died at the hospital a day later.
Wyatt's lawyer, Assistant Public Defender K.S. Galhotra, told Brown he believed his client's husband was abusive.
In response to the judge's question about the taped confession, Galhotra said: "Well, judge, there are such things in the this world as false confessions."
Outside the courtroom a group of Wyatt's relatives asserted her innocence.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, which is also investigating Jaymeon's death, had previously received two allegations of neglect involving the woman's three children in May.
One of those allegations was found to be credible, according to a DCFS spokesman who said the family was referred for "services." It was unclear what that entailed.
DCFS has taken custody of the woman's two other children in the home as part of the probe of the Jaymeon's death.
