(CNN) -- A second 2-year-old boy has gone missing in 10 days
from Yavapai County, Arizona, authorities said Tuesday as they
announced a major search effort under way for the toddler, identified
as Emmett Trapp.
Emmett's disappearance is believed to be
unrelated to the case of Sylar Newton, another 2-year-old who was
reported missing July 25 from a camping site in Rimrock, Yavapai County
Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said.
Sylar's disappearance is now being investigated as a criminal case, authorities said Monday.
Emmett was reported missing by his mother at 8 p.m. Monday, the sheriff's office said in a news release.
The
mother told authorities that she and her four children were at their
home in the Dewey-Humboldt area, about 80 miles north of Phoenix. When
the mother awoke from a nap Monday evening, Emmett -- last seen wearing
a pajama top and a diaper -- was missing.
The family dog had
also apparently wandered off with Emmett but returned when called. The
mother told police she searched around the home and immediate area
without success. Authorities have conducted aerial as well as ground searches for the boy, according to the sheriff's office.
"There is no evidence of foul play associated with the missing child as of now," the news release said. Meanwhile, D'Evelyn said Tuesday that the investigation into Sylar's disappearance is ongoing.
Sylar
was last seen shortly after midnight July 24, sleeping in a tent with
his custodial family at the Beaver Creek Campgrounds. About 1:45 a.m.
July 25, the family noticed that he was missing from his sleeping bag.
"The
sheriff's office believes Sylar did not wander from the campground, and
he is presumably dead," Yavapai County Sheriff Steve Waugh said Monday.
"The search effort is now in a recovery mode and the investigation has
become criminal in nature." Waugh said investigators have spent
three days searching more than 200 tons of garbage in a nearby landfill
"to try to determine if in fact the boy's body was there."
Sylar
was camping with Christina Priem and her children when he disappeared.
Priem has said she was in the process of adopting the boy from his
biological mother.
D'Evelyn said last week that "there's no
evidence" that the planned adoption played a role in his disappearance,
"but until we've exhausted every lead, all possibilities are being
investigated."
About 25 other people were at
the campgrounds the night of Sylar's disappearance, all of whom have
cooperated with investigators, according to the sheriff's office.

While the search for 2-year-old Sylar Newton's whereabouts continues,
the Yavapai County Sheriff's Office has launched a new search for another missing 2-year-old boy.
YCSO reported Tuesday afternoon that deputies, along with search and rescue
personnel, are currently searching for Emmett Trapp, who was last seen
at his home in the 1800 block of Lavender Sage Road in Dewey. Emmett has
brown hair, blue eyes, and was wearing a pajama top, diaper and no
shoes. He is about 26 pounds and is 3 feet tall.
Monday night around 8 p.m., the boy's mother called YCSO to report Emmett
missing. She and her four children had been home together and when she
awoke from a nap in the early evening hours, she could not find Emmett.
She searched around her home and property without success. The family
dog had apparently wandered off with Emmett, but the dog returned when called.
Emmett's mom contacted her husband at
work and called the sheriff's office to report him missing. Deputies
arrived within 10 minutes and began checking the home and surrounding
areas for Emmett. The search expanded overnight and included air
searches by the Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the search effort continues with additional teams
in the area. There is no evidence at this time of foul play associated
with the missing child.
Updates will be provided as they become available.
YCSO also reports that there is no known connection between this incident and the Sylar Newton case.
Anyone with information about either missing toddler should call YCSO at 928-771-3260.

BREAKING NEWS: Missing boy, Emmett Trapp, found dead
Emmett Trapp, a missing 2-year-old who vanished from his home in Dewey Monday night, was found dead Wednesday morning around 11:30 a.m., according to Prescott Valley police who were aiding in the search.
"Our searchers are heartbroken as you can imagine," Yavapai County Sheriff's Office spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn said at the scene. "Our prayers go out to the Trapp family."
Search and rescue personnel located Emmett approximately one mile from his home in the 1800 block of Lavender Sage Road. The area where the body was found has been contained and investigators are treating it like a crime scene which, according to authorities, is a common protocol in any unattended death to ensure that a complete and thorough investigation can be conducted to determine the cause and manner of the death.
"We are just devastated by the loss of this little boy," D'Evelyn said. "As a parent, hug your children closer."
No further details are being released at this time.

Damn it, why can't parents be responsible and watch their children? This just tears my heart in two, I was so sure they'd find him, alive. What bothers me even more is, he had wandered away from the house before!!!! DUH--didn't the parents know to fix it so he couldn't get out or at least get out of the yard. Parents can be so stupid & lazy.
Rest in Peace & God Bless Emmett, your safe now baby.

Yavapai County Sheriff's Office Spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn
during a press conference Wednesday afternoon, held shortly after Emmett
Trapp's body was found:
We have some heartbreaking news this afternoon.
Emmett Trapp has been found deceased. At approximately 11:30 today,
searchers discovered Emmett's body about one mile from the house. The
area where his body was found is being treated like a crime scene, which
is common protocol in any unattended death like this.
In consideration of family members, we ask the press stay away from that
scene, including air photography. We are working the scene currently
and are trying to find out what happened to this little boy.
Sherriff Waugh would like to thank all those involved in the search.
Our searchers are heartbroken, as you can imagine. Many of them are down
just talking to each other and sharing emotions about the search and
what happened to little Emmett.
Our prayers go out to the Trapp family and we ask that you respect their privacy
as they deal with this unfortunate death.
We will provide updates as they become available. The investigation is
ongoing as to exactly what happened to Emmett and how he died at this particular location.
That will be underway over the next several days. If I'm permitted to
release any further details, I will do so as soon as they become available.
We want to thank everybody in the public and the media for their
interest in this case. We are just devastated by the loss of this little boy.
We had hoped to find him alive, but that was not the case. As a parent,
hug your children a little closer tonight. It's been tough for everyone all the way around.
That's all I can say about the situation for now. I will be out on scene most of the afternoon.

Re: EMMETT COLE TRAPP- 2 yo - Humboldt (SW of Flagstaff) AZ
The worst fears of those who searched for little Emmett Trapp were realized
Wednesday when they found his body in a sludge pit about a mile from his home.
"Our searchers are heartbroken, as
you can imagine," said Dwight D'Evelyn, a spokesman for the Yavapai
County Sheriff's Office. "Our prayers go out to the Trapp family."
The 2-year-old disappeared Monday evening after wandering off from his
Dewey home set in a hilly, rural area. This marks the second toddler to
go missing in slightly over a week in Yavapai County.
What happened to Sylar Newton, 2, of Flagstaff remains a mystery after he
was reported missing from a campground in Beaver Creek on July 25. The
search for Sylar is now a criminal investigation, D'Evelyn said.
"We're hoping to find out where his body might be," D'Evelyn said about Sylar.
At about 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, rescuers found Emmett's body in a sludge
pit near a mine about a mile from his home in the 1800 block of Lavender Sage Road.
"He may have gotten stuck and couldn't get out," D'Evelyn said. "He fell forward in this pit. It's
just a tragedy, all the way around."
Although barefoot and wearing only diapers and his pajama top, officers estimate
that Emmett actually walked about three miles on an indirect route over
rough terrain to get into the muddy pit, D'Evelyn said. He called the
small child's trek "quite a feat."
A civilian searcher who lived in the area of the pit noticed small footprints and
alerted the sheriff's office, said D'Evelyn. Based on computer modeling
and past experience, the YCSO drew up a search parameter and the area
where Emmett's body was found was just outside it, he said. A team of
searchers and the Department of Public Safety Ranger helicopter
converged on the sludge pit at the same time, he said.
Around 8 p.m. Monday the child's mother called YCSO to report him missing. The
mother and her four children were at home together and when she woke up
from a nap in the early evening she couldn't find Emmett. She checked
her house and the yard without finding him, and then called the YCSO.
The family dog, a Labrador-golden retriever mix, who may have been with
the boy, returned home when the mother called for her son.
Deputies arrived about 10 minutes after her call and began to search the area.
More than 90 people from the Sheriff's Response Team, Jeep Posse,
Volunteers in Protection, the FBI, Prescott and Prescott Valley police
departments looked systematically for Emmett. The state Department of
Public Safety and Department of Corrections officers participated as
well. Horseback and ATV riders along with bloodhounds helped look for the boy.
The searchers "are just devastated by the loss of this little boy," D'Evelyn said. "As a parent, hug your children closer."
Molly Kutsick, a Dewey neighbor and the mother of three young children,
called Emmett's death "horrible." Her children, ages 6, 3 and 1, all
wanted to help search for the lost boy, she said.
"That's devastating that something like that can happen," Kutsick said. She had
been praying that Emmett would be found alive and well. "Our heart goes
out to the family. I cannot imagine what they're going through."
"It's heartbreaking," she added. "You never know what can happen. You have to
watch (children) every moment. I know how quick they can get away from you."
Delilah Buetzow, a mother and grandmother, who also lives in the area, was in tears at the sad news.
"It's so hard to get them to understand," she said about very young children.
"Sometimes they feel like they're invincible ... It's so heartbreaking.
The little guy won't be forgotten."
Buetzow and her family moved to five acres in Dewey for the lifestyle, so the
children could be outdoors. It's hard to keep children in, beyond
"padlocking" the doors, she said.
"If they want out, they get out," Buetzow added. "I don't want to even imagine what
that family's going through. It's just enough to crush your spirit."
Her daughter-in-law, Alex Bushee, whose children are 9, 5 and 3, said she
wished the sheriff's office had let local residents, who hike and ride
ATVs in the area, help with the search.
"We know the land," Bushee said. "We wanted to help find that baby."
D'Evelyn responded to Bushee's comments by saying that YCSO uses "qualified,
certified" people who have undergone background checks. They know how
not to destroy evidence and not to jeopardize scent dogs' ability to
track. Also, YCSO could face liability problems if untrained searchers
become ill or injured, he said.
He noted that the man who discovered Emmett's tracks near the pit was not officially part of the search.
He thanked everyone who helped.
"We had offers from all over the country," D'Evelyn said. "The crews are
extremely saddened by this. They wanted nothing more than to find this little boy."
Dewey-Humboldt Mayor Len Marinaccio
wrote to Sheriff Steve Waugh saying, "On behalf of the Town of
Dewey-Humboldt, I want to personally thank you and your dedicated
commanders, lieutenants, deputies and staff for their overwhelming
response to the disappearance of Emmett Trapp. ...While the ultimate
outcome was tragic, it should be evident to all that your organization
did everything it could to recover the child."

County sheriff’s deputies have been searching for the 2-year-old boy

Re: EMMETT COLE TRAPP- 2 yo - Humboldt (SW of Flagstaff) AZ
Such a heartbreaking story. The police mentioned not wanting local residents to participate and one of the reasons was not to interfere with the scent for the searcher dogs; it doesn't appear that they used dogs and I always wonder why that isn't the first thing to do when a child goes missing from their home. And this baby was barefoot so wouldn't you think that would even be easier to track?
