I clicked on
reply at the bottom of page and then clicked on the B
or the A at the
top of the reply page

(switch editor mode) located on the right side of the icons

I wanted to post my own photo to my profile but it would not let me. Is it avatars only for profiles?

yes, photos are for the avatar.
