ANAHI JUAREZ-GONZALEZ - 11 Months (2010)/ charged: 17 yo cousin - Denver CO
It happened Tuesday morning at an apartment at 1095 S. Quivas near W. Mississippi. Outside the modest apartment is a growing memorial for 11-month old Anahi Juarez-Gonzalez.
"She was really outgoing. She was crawling and already taking her first baby steps," said a relative who only wanted to be identified as "Maria."
Inside the apartment is a grieving mother--shell-shocked over the sudden and unexpected death of her baby.
Maricella Gonzalez-Gonzalez says in Spanish and through tears that her daughter died in so much pain, and that she still hasn't gotten to see her.
"Very unfortunate case where a relative was watching this little girl and, at some point, the relative found the child in a bathtub," said Denver Police Det. John White.
Police won't say how the child ended up in the tub, but Maricella said her husband's nephew was bathing her. They don't know how Anahi ended up drowning.
"You go somewhere. You leave her. You never expect to get that call that you're never going to see her anymore," said Maria.
Candles flickering in Anahi's memory, sit next to a donation box to pay for her funeral.
Her stuffed animals remind them of what they've lost. But also what they have to live for--a nearly 2-year-old son and another baby on the way. Maricella is four months pregnant.
The Denver Coroner did an autopsy but won't release any information pending further studies.
The immigrant family is lower-income and needs help paying for their baby's funeral.
Friends have set up the Anahi Juarez Memorial Fund. Donations can be made at any US Bank.

Denver police investigating bathtub death of 11-month-old in cousin's care
Denver police are investigating the death of a baby in a bathtub.
The 11-month-old girl died Tuesday at her home at 1095 S. Quivas St., police said.
The girl was being cared for by a 17-year-old cousin when the drowning occurred, said John White, a Denver Police Department spokesman.
The Denver Office of the Medical Examiner identified the child as Anahi Juarez-Gonzalez.
Family members on Thursday — including Anahi's parents, Maricela Juarez and Jesus Gonzales — said the death was accidental.
"It was an accident," Gonzales said in Spanish. Extended family members, who declined to be identified, interpreted for the parents.
The cousin who was watching Anahi and her 23-month-old brother, Jesus Jr., while their mother was at a doctor's appointment, had watched the children before without any problems, the family said. Anahi had just started walking.
Family and friends gathered around the parents Thursday afternoon, offering condolences and support.
Prayer candles and religious images were assembled in front of the family's apartment door.
Inside the apartment, Jesus Jr. squirmed in his mother's lap and cried as he tried to escape her embrace. The boy misses his sister, the family said.
Family members said they don't know exactly what happened because they've not been able to talk to their cousin. He's being held by police on an unrelated matter.
They said it's their understanding that Anahi suffered some type of head trauma.
The incident is being investigated as a possible child-neglect or child-abuse case, police said.
An autopsy has been performed, but "results are pending further studies at this time," the coroner's office said.

Anahi Juarez: Misery, mystery accompany parents at girl's grave

TENDING TO FAMILY. The family of Anahi Juarez, left, who died at the age of 10 months, visits the girl's grave at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Wheat Ridge in June. Anahi's mother, Marciela Gonzalez, grooms the grass around the grave marker, while her husband, Jesus Juarez, plays with their other children, Jesus, right, and Carolina. Anahi drowned in a bathtub Sept. 7, 2010, while she and her brother were in the care of Juarez s then-17-year-old cousin. The family tries to visit the grave weekly. (Craig F. Walker, The Denver Post)
Almost every week, Marciela Gonzalez and Jesus Juarez visit their daughter's grave.
Gonzalez wipes away tears as she plucks blades of grass from around the polished headstone; her husband kneels next to her, staring at a photo of his daughter.
Anahi Juarez's parents still do not know the details of how their daughter died Sept. 7, 2010.
Six months before Anahi's death, Denver Human Services opened an investigation because an intoxicated Juarez drove his son to the emergency room. Juarez admitted to driving drunk but explained that his son was having a hard time breathing and there was no one else to take the boy.
Juarez and Gonzalez accepted visits from child protection workers after the drunken-driving report and appeared to be making progress as a family, according to a state and county review of Anahi's death.
The last time the couple saw Anahi, she smiled, they said. Juarez left for work that morning. Gonzalez had a doctor's appointment, and the two left Anahi and her older brother, Jesus, in the care of Juarez's then-17-year-old cousin.
That morning, the teenager fell asleep.
The cousin told investigators that while he was sleeping, Jesus, almost 2 at the time, went into the bathroom and turned on the bathtub faucet. He told authorities that the 10-month-old Anahi must have then fallen into the tub and drowned.
The coroner's report lists drowning as the cause of death, and the manner of death was determined to be accidental. The teen was charged as a juvenile in the case, and his case file is sealed.

Apparently this case has been adjudicated and we will never know the results because he was charged as a juvenile.
