On June 9, Thornton Police were dispatched to an apartment complex on Woburn Keep on a report of a physical domestic incident in progress. When they arrived, they found the baby girl with her eyes closed and breathing. Jazmyn was rushed to Children’s Hospital where doctors determined that she had suffered neurologic devastation. They had to drill a hole into her head to relieve brain swelling and save her life. Griffin explained to police how he violently shook his daughter, then later recanted saying that he didn’t remember what happened, prosecutors said. He also admitted to being under the influence of methamphetamine at the time. As a result of her injuries, prosecutors say Jazmyn’s head will never grow because of the death of her brain matter. She is blind for life and, at 18-months-old, is unable to walk or talk and is being fed through a stomach tube. "This case is beyond tragic”, states Adams/Broomfield County District Attorney Don Quick. “An innocent child will suffer for the rest of her life as the result of horrible choices made by her father. He will pay the price for those choices for 24 years, but Jazmyn will pay for the rest of her life.”

A 23-year-old man in Thorton was sentenced today to 24 years in prison and 5 years of parole for severely shaking his daughter when she was less than 3 months old, causing irreversible brain damage.
Now, at 18 months old, the child is fed through a tube in her stomach, and is unable to see, walk or talk, and doctors have said her head will never grow.
The man, Daniel Griffin, also admitted during the investigation that he was on methamphetamines at the time, according to the release from the Adams and Broomfield County district attorney.
Thorton police responded to the incident on June 9, 2009, finding the baby girl, Jazmyn Griffin breathing, and with her eyes closed.
The girl's mother reported to police that she had left the girl in the room with Griffin when the girl was crying and spitting up her bottle. After returning, she noticed something wrong with the girl. She told police that Griffin told her he may have squeezed Jazmyn too hard.
After Jazmyn was transported to the hospital, doctors confirmed she suffered neurological devastation. A hole was drilled into her skull to relieve brain swelling.
Doctors also discovered damage above her liver indicating that she had been squeezed very hard.
Griffin plead guilty to the original charge of knowing reckless child abuse causing serious injury on June 25, 2010.
His sentence will include credit for the 458 days he has already served.
