LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Lafayette Police are searching for a 4-year-old last seen early this morning in the 2200 block of Schuyler Avenue in Lafayette.
The website AChildIsMissing.org lists a current alert for 4-year-old Trina Rodriguez. According to Lafayette Police Lieutenant Tom Davidson, Trina is a biracial young girl with curly black hair and brown eyes, who is approximately three feet tall and 40 pounds. The site said that Trina was last seen wearing blue leggings and a dark striped t-shirt with a star on it.
Davidson said Trina was last seen around 7:30 a.m. Tuesday by her relatives. She was in her bed at the time. He said a relative called police just after noon Tuesday, saying the child hadn't been seen since then.
"We're diligently searching right now," Davidson said. "You hope, as a minimum, it's just the child walked away, but we have to treat it as a serious matter until we locate Trina." He added, the department does not suspect foul play at this time.
As of around 2:00 p.m., Davidson said police believe Trina's aunt may have picked her up, due to information from neighbors who said they saw the mother's sister there with the child. However, the aunt does not have a cell phone and police have been unable to reach her, Davidson said.
Lafayette police were being assisted by Indiana State Police, including a K-9 unit. Davidson said at least 20 officers were searching the several blocks around Trina's home. They were knocking on neighbors' doors and searching the area for any signs of the child.
The A Child is Missing program has been in use by the Lafayette Police for approximately a year. As News Channel 18 explained in an April story , the program works somewhat like a more localized Amber Alert, sending automated phone calls to nearby residents with the missing child's name and a description.
If you have any information about Trina Rodriguez, please call the Lafayette Police Department at 765-807-1240.
Editor's note: News Channel 18 has received conflicting information regarding the name of the missing 4-year-old, and we have not been able to verify the correct spelling. This story uses the first information we received, but her name may be spelled "Trenia Rodriguez."
