A small-town pastor hurried to a local motel with a stack of business cards Monday after learning the body of a 5-year-old was found in one of the rooms over the weekend. The girl's mother had been found dead near railroad tracks about 100 feet from the Home Town Inn.
Rose Irene Warner, 31, of Topeka, Kan., apparently had been hit by a Union Pacific Railroad train, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Jessica Brown said. The body of Alexandria Leigh Warner was found in the room her mother had checked into on Saturday afternoon after their car broke down and a law officer took them to the motel just off U.S. 54.The OSBI is investigating the deaths as suspicious, Brown said. Brown said she didn't know how the child died. The bodies were taken to the state medical examiner's office, which did not release cause of death Monday on either the mother or the child. The Rev. Tommy Hull said he asked motel employees to call him if they ever find out a motel guest is distraught or otherwise in need."She slipped through the cracks,” Hull said. "If we would have known, we would have helped.”Hull said he is part of the Ministerial Alliance, a group of pastors who provide lodging, food and gas to stranded travelers.About 1,500 people live in Texhoma, which is in the Panhandle near the state line with Texas."There is a lot of transit traffic,” Police Chief David Butler said. The motel owner, who asked not to be identified, referred all questions to the OSBI but did say the motel's records reflect Warner paid for the room with cash. The bodies were found about 9 p.m. Saturday."The community is certainly in shock,” Butler said.Texhoma is about 20 miles southwest of Guymon and is part of a busy trucking route, Butler said.

TEXHOMA — A 5-year-old girl whose body was found in a Texhoma motel room after her mother was fatally hit by a train most likely died from being smothered and had anti-anxiety drugs in her system, according to an autopsy report released Tuesday.

The body of Alexandria Leigh Warner was found Oct. 30, face up and covered with a blanket, the report states. The girl would have turned 6 on Nov. 8.The child and her mother, Rose Irene Warner, 31, of Topeka, Kan., had checked into a room at the Home Town Inn after their car broke down earlier that day. A law officer took them to the motel just off U.S. 54.

Diazepam and a trace of nordiazepam, drugs used primarily to treat anxiety, were present in the child's blood, the report states. The same drugs were found in the mother's body.

The autopsy report stated the “most likely scenario is asphyxia through smothering.” The death was ruled a homicide, but the medical examiner said cause of death is unknown, based on the fact that the asphyxiation finding was “non-specific.

”Rose Warner's autopsy report was released in January, and the report states the mother had “acceptable levels” of diazepam and nordiazepam in her system.

The mother's death was listed as multiple blunt force trauma. The manner of death was listed as unknown because the medical examiner could not rule out either homicide or suicide, said Cherokee Ballard, state medical examiner's spokeswoman. Union Pacific spokeswoman Raquel Espinoza-Williams said Warner walked into the path of the train.

“The case is still an open case,” said Jessica Brown, spokeswoman. “There are items we still need to wrap up.”Kansas records show Rose Warner's divorce was finalized Oct. 13. Her daughter was withdrawn from school Sept. 30. Warner was facing a court case involving child support and other matters pertaining to Alexandria, records show.

Firm: Woman killed herself

Posted: November 6, 2010 - 12:55am
By Madelyn Bankhead-Vieth

Union Pacific Railroad officials confirmed Friday that a woman who was found dead Oct. 30 threw herself in the way of an oncoming train.

Rose Irene Warner, 31, of Topeka, Kan., was hit by the train about 9 p.m. Saturday near Second Street in Texhoma, Okla., according to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation.

Train engineers saw what was initially described as an "object" land over the tracks before hitting it at about 8:56 p.m., said Raquel Espinoza-Williams, Union Pacific director of corporate relations and media.

They immediately reported the incident and local authorities and medical personnel were called, she said.

Engineers could not confirm it was a person until the train came to a stop and the investigation began because it was dark outside, Williams said.

Union Pacific assisted Texhoma officials in investigating the death, she said.

A baby blanket was found near Warner's body, prompting officials to search for a child, OSBI spokeswoman Jessica Brown has said.

During the investigation, officials discovered Warner and her daughter, 5-year-old Alexandria Leigh Warner, had checked into the Home Town Inn on State Highway 54 earlier that day.

Warner's car had broken down Oct. 30 and a sheriff's deputy drove the woman and her daughter to the motel, Brown said.

Alexandria's body was found by police in their motel room, according to OSBI. Brown said Thursday that Alexandria's cause of death was not known.

Autopsy results on the bodies will not be available for at least a month, according to Cherokee Ballard, public information officer for the Oklahoma Office of the Chief Medical Examiner.

Results will not be finalized for about four to six weeks pending toxicology results, Ballard said.

Court records in Shawnee County show Warner's divorce from former husband Steven Warner, previously of Topeka, were finalized Oct. 13, according to Morris News Service.

Steven Warner, who moved to Ohio about three months before the divorce was finalized, had filed for parenting, child support and adjustment for long-distance parenting time in late July, Morris News Service reported.

Alexandria had attended kindergarten classes until Sept. 29 at Cair Paravel Latin School in Topeka, the news service reported.

Rose Warner unexpectedly withdrew Alexandria from classes Sept. 30, the school's headmaster, Michael Johnson, told Morris News.

Johnson found out about the deaths Tuesday, he said.

Circumstances surrounding the deaths remain unclear, and both are being investigated by the OSBI as suspicious, Brown said.

TEXHOMA — A woman who died after she was hit by a train in Texhoma had what the state medical examiner termed were “acceptable levels” of prescription drugs in her system, according to an autopsy report released this week.

Rose Irene Warner, 31, of Topeka, Kan., died Oct. 30. The body of her 5-year-old daughter, Alexandria Leigh Warner, was found in their room at the nearby Home Town Inn in Texhoma. The medical examiner has not released cause of death on the child, and her autopsy has not been completed.

The presence in Rose Warner's system of Diazepam and Nordiazepam, drugs used primarily to treat anxiety, were noted in the medical examiner's report.

“They were present in her system but not an amount significant to this case,” said Cherokee Ballard, state medical examiner's spokeswoman.

The cause of death was listed as multiple blunt force trauma. The manner of Warner's death was listed as unknown because the medical examiner could not rule out either homicide or suicide, Ballard said.

“We haven't seen any official report from the OSBI that officially declares her death a homicide or a suicide,” said Rick Caddell, Texas County sheriff.

Jessica Brown, Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, said the case is still under investigation.

Union Pacific spokeswoman Raquel Espinoza-Williams said Warner walked into the path of the train.

Kansas records show Warner's divorce was finalized Oct. 13. Her daughter was withdrawn from school on Sept. 30. Warner was facing a court case involving child support and other matters pertaining to Alexandria, records show.

The body of Alexandria Warner was found in the motel room her mother had checked into that afternoon after their car broke down. A law officer took them to the motel just off U.S. 54.
