MEBANE, N.C. (WGHP) —
A woman has been arrested in Mebane and charged with child abuse after emergency officials found a 2-year-old boy unresponsive.
Deputies and EMS responded to Lot #4 of Norris Mobile Home Park, located at 1800 Highway 70 near Mebane, around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday. Officials said the boy's father called 911, and EMS officials found the boy unconscious and unresponsive when they arrived on scene.
The boy was transported by ambulance to UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill. He was last reported to be in critical condition as of Monday. The boy has multiple skull fractures, which caused him to go into a coma, court documents revealed. The boy also had bruises on his face, chest, arms and back, as well as a cut on the back of his head.
Christiana Julia Ayscue, 23, the girlfriend of the boy's father who was living in the home, was charged with felony child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury. She was placed in jail under a $750,000 secured bond.
Ayscue asked for a court-appointed attorney during her first court appearance Monday, and her next court appearance is scheduled for Jan. 11. The father of the boy and his relatives appeared in court Monday but refused comment.
Randy Jones, Alamance County Sheriff's Department spokesman, said the boy's mother is believed to be en route to Alamance County.

Toddler's Condition Improves after Being Found Unconscious in Home
ALAMANCE COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) —
A 2-year-old boy who was placed in a medically induced coma after being found unresponsive in his home on Saturday has made significant improvement in his condition, officials said in a release.
The toddler, Parker, has been taken off of medication in order to allow him to awake from the induce coma. The prognosis is in fact much more positive. Josh Haynes, the boy's father, expressed his gratitude for support and prayers from the community, officials said.
Christina Julia Ayscue, 23, the live-in girlfriend of the boy's father, was arrested and charged with child abuse after emergency officials found Parker unresponsive.
Deputies and EMS responded to Lot #4 of Norris Mobile Home Park, located at 1800 Highway 70 near Mebane, around 5:40 p.m. on Saturday. Officials said the boy's father called 911, and EMS officials found Parker unconscious and unresponsive when they arrived on scene.

Ayscue initially told investigators that a television fell on the boy before changing her story and saying that the child had fallen in the tub. Detective James McVey of the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office said in the search warrant that Ayscue appeared intoxicated when officers arrived and that she was uncooperative with investigators. Investigators believe she was the only adult present at the mobile home while the father was gone.
Detectives secured the search warrant after doctors at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill said the child’s wounds were inconsistent with Ayscue’s account. Authorities have not released the identity or condition of the child.
In a search of 1871 U.S. 70 lot four, investigators seized more than 30 items, including a blue towel with blood on it, a sheet from the child’s bed, three blood samples from the shower wall, a washcloth from the master bedroom, swatches from a couch in the living room, a pillow from the hallway, a blood sample from the wall near a microwave cart, a coat hanger, drain stopper and a bottle of Resolve carpet cleaner. They also seized samples of open liquor bottles and, in a separate search warrant, secured a blood sample from Ayscue at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Re: PARKER HAYNES - 2 yo (2010) - Mebane (W of Durham) NC
A Mebane woman pleaded guilty Monday to bashing a toddler’s head
against a wall while left to care for him, possibly causing the boy
life-long brain damage.
Christiana Julia Ayscue, 23, of Norris Mobile Home Park, pleaded
guilty to a Dec. 11 count of felony child abuse inflicting serious
injury. Investigators believe Ayscue became angry and slammed then
2-year-old Parker Haynes into a kitchen wall, causing skull fractures,
brain swelling and hemorrhaging in his eyes.
Alamance County District Attorney Pat Nadolski said doctors at UNC
Hospitals in Chapel Hill were initially uncertain whether the boy would
survive the injuries and, if he did, whether he would be brain damaged
for life. Though he has recovered and is verbally advanced for his age,
doctors aren’t sure whether the child’s brain will develop normally.
After hearing from members of the boy’s family, Ayscue’s father and
Ayscue herself, Superior Court Judge Wayne Abernathy sentenced her to a
minimum of 59 months and a maximum of 80 months in prison, between four
years 11 months and six years eight months.
Parker Haynes was hospitalized for 20 days after his father, Josh
Haynes, found him unresponsive in his crib the evening of Dec. 11.
Haynes had returned home from work and went to check on the boy. Haynes
and Ayscue were dating at the time. Ayscue had been at the home all day
caring for Parker and her 3-year-old son from a previous relationship.
Haynes called 911 when the boy began having seizures.
Ayscue initially told investigators that the boy had fallen in the
bathtub, then said a shelf had fallen on him before changing her story
again, saying a television had fallen on him. Alamance County detectives
found blood in the kitchen and the bathtub, Nadolski said. They also
found an empty bottle of tequila at the residence and believe Ayscue was
drinking.
“After a very long interview, she admitted to pushing him really hard
into the kitchen wall. She said that Parker kept asking the same
questions over and over again and she admitted that she just pushed him
really, really hard,” Nadolski said. “If you talk to him now ... you
wouldn't think this type of thing had happened. But because he’s so
young, we won’t know the full extent of his injuries until he’s older.”
The child’s grandparents, Janelle and Grady Haynes, asked Abernathy
for justice and to provide Ayscue with substance abuse counseling.
“I’m not out for revenge, but I am out to protect Parker,” Janelle
Haynes said. “As a grandmother, my biggest concern … was that she had
three opportunities to call for help for him but didn’t. She had the
presence of mind to try to clean up and hide what she had done but she
didn’t have the presence of mind to call for help for my grandson.”
Ayscue’s father, Randy Ayscue, and her pastor, the Rev. Stewart
Johnston, said she has accepted responsibility for what she did and has
turned her life around and become devoutly religious during her five
months in the Alamance County jail.
Christiana Ayscue tearfully read a letter of apology to the family
and asked for permission to write a letter of apology for the family to
read to the boy when he is older.
“I want you to know how broken and ashamed I am for what I’ve done,”
Ayscue said. “Because of my actions, it is a miracle that Parker is
alive … I’m so sorry for not being the woman or the mother you expected
me to be. I never met more generous, loving or godly people in all my
life. I can only ask that one day you will forgive me.”
There was no plea arrangement.
Defense attorney Early Kenan asked Abernathy for a mitigated
sentence, given the amount of support Ayscue has at her church. Many
family members and congregants were in the court room Monday.
Nadolski asked Abernathy not to give less than the state’s
presumptive level of sentencing, given that the child could have died if
the father hadn’t checked on him.
Abernathy issued the maximum sentence the state allowed. Ayscue has
no prior criminal record. He recommended substance abuse treatment and
recommended her for work release.
“This is not an easy case for me,” Abernathy said. “The sentence I
will give doesn’t increase Parker’s chances for 100-percent recovery …
Miss Ayscue, I do not believe that you are a totally bad person, but you
certainly did a bad thing.”
