CORAL SPRINGS —
Roosevelt Thermitus didn't know that police
tracking dogs, a helicopter, and dozens of officers and volunteers were
combing streets and canal banks for him for six hours early Tuesday. It wasn't because Thermitus, 15, is blind and couldn't see all the ruckus. It's because he was busy sleeping. The
teen's family reported him missing at about 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, telling
police he was home when they went to sleep but was gone when they woke
up.
Many hours later, safely back at
home, Thermitus told the Sun Sentinel he had been angry with his family
and decided to go for an early morning walk. Eventually he met up with a
friend. They went to a nearby Dunkin Donuts,
where surveillance cameras caught footage of the teens hanging out for
an hour starting at about 4:30 a.m. Thermitus asked one of his friends
if he could stay over."He said yes, but said his mother was probably going to call police," said Thermitus. And that's exactly how the scenario played out.The friend's mother discovered the teen sleeping on her couch shortly after noon."When she walked in, she said, 'Is that the kid who's missing?'" Thermitus said. Earlier, while he slept, police put tape around the family's four-unit apartment complex in the 7900 block of Northwest 35th Court in Coral Springs. Television crews broadcast live reports in front of the house, urging the public to help.Thermitus' mother sat in a chair outside, surrounded by friends and an umbrella to protect her from the sun.Blocks
away, police bloodhounds sniffed around area canals and yards. Police
had their first clue that Thermitus was OK when someone called to report
the sighting at the donut shop.At one point, representatives of
the school Thermitus attends, run by Lighthouse of Broward, and from the
Florida Division of Blind Services, met with reporters to explain about
the special cane and portable Braille device the teen was believed to
be carrying.At about 12:30 p.m. a family member got a text
message from the teen's friend: Thermitus was safe. Police picked him up
and took him home. Thermitus wouldn't reveal what made him so angry that he left his house. His relieved mother promised to spare him any sort of punishment."We're just glad he's safe and glad God took care of him," said Duielimene Tima.
