CONNER BACHUSS - 2 yo - Paducah KY
McCracken County sheriff's detectives have arrested Ronald Saunders II
in connection with the death of two-year-old Conner Bachuss. The child
was found unresponsive at his west McCracken County home on Dec. 5. He
was taken to Lourdes hospital and transferred to Kosair Children's
Hospital in Louisville where he later died.
Examinations from the
state medical examiner and Kosair officials revealed that the child had
multiple small puncture wounds on the bottoms of his feet and other
areas of his body. Subsequently a push pin (tack) was found in his
stomach. The tack had apparently been ingested by the child. Saunders
was taken to the McCracken County Jail on one count of murder. Bond was
set at $1 million.

MCCRACKEN COUNTY, Ky. — In day two of a murder trial, the jury
saw detailed autopsy photos. Doctors and medical experts testify the
2-year-old victim was not only suffocated, but also beaten and abused.
Taking the stand, Dr. Donna Stewart testified, "This child was well and healthy."
But Stewart never saw little Conner Bachuss that way. She was the one
who performed his autopsy, one day after his December 2010 death.
The little boy had been suffocated and five days after being flown to
Kosair Children's Hospital in Louisville, he was declared brain dead
and taken off a ventilator.
Reports from Lourdes Hospital, where he was initially treated, also
showed puncture wounds on the bottom of his feet and in the genital
area, as well as fresh bruises on his head, neck and arms.
Several days later, McCracken County Sheriff's deputies arrested and
charged 25-year-old Ron Saunders with Conner's murder. At the time,
Saunders was dating the little boy's mother.
Stewart was asked if he had struggled in the moments before he died.
"In my expert opinion, he did," she said.
She pointed out and easily explained extensive bruising.
"Those could be say from the child trying to get away or banging, someone banging the head."
But puncture marks on his genital arms, chest and most commonly his
feet — 41 on the right, 47 on the left, she testified — could not be
explained.
Other medical examiners, testifying for the prosecution, agreed.
"Had Conner been abused?" Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Jim
Harris asked child abuse expert and pediatrician Dr. Andrea Taroli, who
had examined the body.
"Yes," she responded.
She added a plastic push pin had also been found in his stomach.
Also, she said, Conner's extensive injuries were not a result of
Saunders doing CPR, as had previously been suggested.
The defense painted their client as the good guy, pointing to
testimony from the other Bachuss children, who told then Deputy Devin
Brewer Saunders had been the one to comfort the child, asking for his
mother, saying, "It's okay, buddy," before putting him back to bed.
Also taking the stand was Amber Eaves, the mother to Saunder's son
Ian. The prosecution highlighted an instance when the little boy was an
infant and Saunders angrily told Eaves, "You're going to have to get him
to shut the f*** up."
But later, Eaves defended Saunders saying he rarely lost his cool.
She told the jury he was a good father, she was standing by him and she
believed in his innocence.
The final witnesses for the defense were a pair of workers from Kids Care, where several of the Bachuss children were enrolled.
Defense attorney David Bundrick said it was one of Conner's sisters, not his defendant, who suffocated the little boy.
"Olivia was upset and pushing some of her friends, hurting, pushing," one worker testified.
"And she went for Vada and went to choke her," another continued.
The daycare employees testified the little girl ended up being fine.
But as for her baby brother, it will be up to a jury to decide what
happened.
Closing arguments in this case are scheduled for 9 a.m. Thursday.
