Casey Anthony: George Anthony recalls pleading for time with daughter

George Anthony’s second day in a row on the stand drove television coverage at noon today.
WFTV-Channel 9’s Steve Barrett highlighted the defense’s attempt to suppress statements made by Casey Anthony’s family. She is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee. The defense doesn’t want the jury to hear the family’s statements; the trial is scheduled to start in May.
On the stand, George Anthony said he had pleaded for time alone with his daughter, Casey, to find out where Caylee could be. ”I said I would love to have a chance to talk to her,” he said.
WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing highlighted that George persuaded Casey to write a letter to then-Sheriff Kevin Beary a letter for such a meeting.
“But it was blocked at the last minute at the jail by Anthony’s attorney,” Kealing added. “This testimony from George Anthony is part of a defense motion to have Casey’s statements thrown out, alleging the family was being used by law enforcement as agents of the state.”
George Anthony also testified that investigators told him that his daughter might be in danger in the jail’s general population.
WFTV’s Barrett said, “Defense attorneys are trying to convince the judge that investigators tried to convince George Anthony to help them question Casey Anthony and go around Jose Baez, her attorney.”
George Anthony also said that investigators told him that they had explicit photos of Casey, Barrett reported.
On the stand, Orange County Sheriff’s Sgt. Reginald Hosey said the actions of his officers were guided by George and Cindy Anthony’s concerns over Casey’s erratic behavior and the missing Caylee.
Kealing explained that Anthony’s “defense argues that Anthony was never read her rights and any statement she made to Hosey and other law enforcement should be thrown out.”
WKMG-Channel 6’s Tony Pipitone focused on Hosey’s testimony: The officer said he went on a walk with Casey Anthony on July 16, 2008, and she told him she feared her parents were trying to take Caylee away from her.
“He never put it in writing. He never told anyone until that deposition, apparently,” Pipitone said. “The defense clearly hinting that Sgt. Hosey cannot be believed.”
The hearing is continuing this afternoon.
