Casey Anthony: George’s attorney says he ’stands by daughter’

George and Cindy Anthony learned about six weeks ago that their daughter’s defense planned to accuse him of sexual abuse, the couple’s attorney told NBC’s “Today” this morning.
“It wasn’t a surprise. The only surprise was the detail that was added by Mr. Baez,” attorney Mark Lippman told Ann Curry.
What do you think about that?
Lippman said he was “angry on behalf of my clients” about defense attorney Jose Baez’s opening statement Tuesday.
In a previous “Today” interview with Meredith Vieira, George Anthony said he wanted to find out happened to Caylee and that he couldn’t turn his back on Casey. Casey is charged with first-degree murder in daughter Caylee’s death.
This morning, Lippman characterized the “interesting” situation this way: “You have the love of a father for his daughter versus the truth. And here’s George Anthony’s nothing but the truth. He’s always maintained that he would always tell the truth as to what happened, what he knows, and he’s done so each and every time he’s either been cross examined, deposed or any statement he’s ever given. So certainly he stands by his daughter, and hopes that whatever happens, that the truth comes out at the end of the day.”
Lippman said he was concerned about Casey’s “mental stability” because “issues that have been raised by the defense are, at this point, nothing by conjecture.” And he added: “If they are supported by their client, then it does raise concerns for her mental stability.”
Lippman said if nothing during the trial is offered to support the allegations in the opening statement, he might take legal action against Baez. Lippman said that without any support the opening statement would be “nothing more than a story presented to hurt this family even more than they’ve already been hurt.”
Lippman added about Baez: ”It’s interesting to have him say those things without any sort of support. In any deposition that he’s been a part of with George Anthony, those questions have never been asked.”
