Casey Anthony: hair, dogs and an outburst — all in a day at court

WFTV-Channel 9’s Steve Barrett called today’s testimony very serious and very technical. WESH-Channel 2’s Amanda Ober said there was a lot of technical testimony and a surprising outburst. Adam Longo of Central Florida News 13 said that Casey Anthony was “diligently taking notes.” WKMG-Channel 6’s Tony Pipitone said Anthony “took some serious notes.”
Television stations described the atmosphere at today’s Frye hearing, which featured spirited debates over admissible evidence. Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee. The trial is set for May, and Chief Judge Belvin Perry will determine whether the jury will hear the debated evidence.
The issues:
The hair: WOFL-Channel 35’s Holly Bristow explained, “There were dozens of hairs that were found inside the back of Casey Anthony’s trunk by investigators at the Orange County Sheriff’s Office, but only one of those hairs, they’re saying, showed signs of human decomposition. The defense argued in court today that’s not an accurate science, and they want it thrown out.”
FBI expert Karen Lowe, via video conference from Virginia, said the hair had a death band — a black ring that appears only after a body decomposes. The state wants that evidence in.
“Both sides were very passionate on their positions, barely allowing each other to talk,” Bristow said.
WKMG’s Pipitone noted that such hair evidence has been introduced in New York, but not in Florida.
WFTV’s Kathi Belich offered this analysis: “The defense had a tough day today. It started off trying to keep out its own confidential expert’s research, which actually validates the hair evidence the defense wants thrown out as junk science.”
Belich said that defense attorney Dorothy Sims’ “repeated improper questioning” of Lowe prompted a lecture by Perry. And Belich added that Perry told prosecutor Jeff Ashton to stop interrupting Sims.
The cadaver dogs: WESH’s Ober said, “Witnesses stated that the dogs, which sniff for dead bodies, alerted to a scent not only in Casey’s car but also at three separate spots at the Anthonys’ home. The defense claims the dogs’ alerts are not reliable and could prejudice the jury.”
Pipitone said, “In the state’s defense, they say that, hey, it’s reliable. Two dogs alerted on both the car and the trunk. And they say proving Casey was the killer is precisely the point.”
After prosecutor Linda Drane Burdick objected to a defense expert’s take on the dogs, defense attorney Jose Baez complained that Drane Burdick “doesn’t do her homework.”
Belich found Baez’s comment “snarky,” and added, “Baez was not so snarky when the prosecutor reduced the defense expert to an observer and a reader” who acknowledged a lot of his testimony was based on his reading.
WFTV legal analyst Bill Sheaffer said that Anthony is the only person who could explain a lot circumstantial evidence. “She comes with too much baggage,” he added.
“So he does not think the defense will put her on the stand,” Belich said.
The outburst: The stations highlighted a dramatic moment. A man in the gallery said, ”The Lord is showing himself in Japan with destruction.”
Judge Perry shouted, “Out. Remove that person from the courtroom.”
That man “caused the biggest outburst,” Belich said.
Pipitone: “The man was shown the door and ordered not to return.”
The Frye hearings continue Thursday and Friday.
