Four Children living in squalor - Chillicothe OH
Filthy conditions at an East Second Street home led to the removal of a 6-year-old boy and three other children.Chillicothe
Police went to the home at 365 E. Second St. after a boy was reported
missing about noon Wednesday.
The boy eventually was located underneath
debris in the kitchen.“It is probably one of the worst houses I’ve ever been in,” said Chillicothe Police Chief Roger Moore. The boy’s parents and the parents of two of the other children were arrested and charged with misdemeanor child endangerment.Moore
said almost every room in the two-story home was piled nearly to the
ceiling with trash and that there were holes in the roof. Dead rats also
were found inside buckets set out to catch rain water, he added.“It smelled like dead bodies. I was afraid we would find the child dead,” Moore said.
When
police failed to find the boy after an initial search of the home,
police and other agencies, including the Chillicothe Fire Department,
began a search of the neighborhood. The boy had last been seen at 3 a.m. and was reported missing after his father awoke at noon and could not find him. The
boy slept in the same room as the father. There was an alarm on the
door to alert if someone opened it, but the father told police he never
heard the alarm sound. At least eight officers had searched
the home over a two-hour period before the child was found hiding under
the kitchen table. There was a small opening in the debris that led
under the table, said Capt. Larry Bamfield.“He was scared.
He had apparently been disciplined by his father and told he would call
the police and they’d take him to the ‘bad boy jail,’” Bamfield said. The
boy’s 4-year-old brother also was removed from the home as well as a
3-year-old and 4-year-old belonging to another couple living in the
home.
