March planned for slain teen

Last year’s brazen murder of 15-year-old Laura Szendrei still touches a nerve in the community.

But her family and members of the Delta community are hoping a memorial walk scheduled for April 10 can help police find a break in the case and build something positive out of that horrific day Sept. 25.

“It’s still really, really raw,” said Brian White, chairman of the Walk, Run & Roll In Memory of Laura Szendrei. “As a parent, I still can’t get my head around it. Kids are scared. Hockey players in Delta now wear LS on their helmets and the soccer team still wears their LS armbands. [The community] is hurting.”

In addition to keeping Szendrei’s memory fresh, proceeds from the walk will be put into a scholarship to help two Delta students pay for post-secondary education.

By Tuesday afternoon, more than 1,700 people had confirmed their attendance on a Facebook event page.

To learn more or register, visit the walk’s website at www.lswalkrunroll.com.

An 18-year-old man has been charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of Laura Szendrei, police in Delta, B.C., announced on Monday morning.

The accused was arrested in the North Delta area on Sunday without incident. He was not previously known to police.

The suspect's identity was not released by police because he was 17 at the time of the homicide. He is expected to appear in court later on Monday.

Szendrei, 15, died in hospital after she was brutally assaulted while walking alone through Mackie Park on the afternoon of Sept. 25.

Delta police spokesperson Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said police believe the suspect did not know Szendrei and it appears attack was a crime of opportunity.

"It's very difficult to answer if it was random or targeted. There are two avenues in which someone could be targeted: either specifically as a person or because an opportunity presented itself. And we believe an opportunity presented itself," said Brooks.
Parents react to arrest

Szendrei's parents made an emotional statement at the morning news conference after police announced the charges.

"There's no way to describe the feeling of this arrest other than to say we are so thankful," said Rachael Szendrei. "We still have many questions not answered. And we don't understand why this happened to our Laura," she said.

"We feel the depth of loss, grief and heartbreak … but for the first time, we also have some relief."

Szendrei's father Michael said when the investigation began he was not confident a suspect in his daughter's death would ever be found.

"At the beginning …I really didn't think the police would come through … but they have," he said.

Furious and emotional, Michael Szendrei verbally lashed out at the young man accused of killing Szendrei’s 15-year-old daughter, Laura.

“Little chicken head. He’s lucky it wasn’t me he ran into,” Michael said outside B.C. Provincial Court in Surrey, where the accused made his first appearance Monday afternoon.

“I’d like to rip his head off . . . He’s in jail, I’m happy. I feel a lot better this guy’s not walking around where I am, eating dinner in the restaurant beside me.”

On Sept. 25, 2010 Laura was found badly beaten in the woods of North Delta’s Mackie Park. She was on her way to meet friends on a sunny Saturday afternoon when she was attacked.

Laura was rushed to hospital, but didn’t make it through the night.

An 18-year-old North Delta man was arrested in an area on the Surrey-Delta border early Sunday morning. He is charged with first-degree murder and cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act because he was 17 at the time of the offence he is accused of committing.

During part of his court appearance the slim young man, who wore a black button-down shirt, had his hands over his eyes. He also wiped away tears and clutched a tissue in his hand.

Laura’s family and friends were also in tears as the young man stood in the prisoner’s dock.

Before the young man was led out of the courtroom, Michael stood up and said, “See you, you little sh--.”

Laura’s mother, Rachael, said outside court that she was surprised at how the man looked.

“Someone that looks like that, all sweet and innocent . . . [I was] expecting a big, black, dark scary monster,” she said.

Prosecutor Wendy Stephen filed notice in court that if the young man is convicted she will seek an adult sentence.

The accused was ordered detained until his next appearance, scheduled for March 7.

At a news conference Monday morning, Delta police Sgt. Sharlene Brooks said there is no evidence that Laura knew her attacker and said the suspect is not known to police. Brooks said there is no evidence that there were other people involved in the crime.

Szendrei Accused Named Online Despite Publication Bans
February 24, 2011

Friends of Laura Szendrei may be unaware that they are violating a publication ban by naming her accused killer online, Delta Police say.

It is in fact a criminal code violation to publish or broadcast - even online - the name of a young offender under the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

"At this point, the Delta police will do what we can to educate people about this issue and remind them that participating in or facilitating the distribution of information identifying a young person is an offence and would make a person subject of an investigation," Brooks said.

"We are asking people to appreciate the seriousness of this and work with us to stop the continuation of such an offence and adhere to the laws laid out that apply to everyone."

Crown counsel spokesman Neil MacKenzie also said it's difficult to rein in online chatter about a high-profile murder case.

"Clearly, controlling the publication of banned information through social networking sites is a complicated issue," MacKenzie said.

"Whether any particular case constitutes a prohibited publication would have to be assessed based on the specific circumstances."

He said it would be up to police to investigate possible breaches in this case or any other.

"I would not want to speculate at this point about what action might be taken in this specific case," MacKenzie said.

Video glitch delays court appearance for Delta teen's murder accused
March 8, 2011

The teen charged with first-degree murder in the death of Laura Szendrei was unable to make a brief appearance in a Surrey courtroom Monday.

The 18-year-old North Delta man cannot be named because he was a youth at the time of the offence he is accused of committing.

The accused was supposed to make his appearance by video but there were technical difficulties.

He is scheduled to appear in court next on April 4.

Preliminary hearing next April for Delta teen's accused killer
May 12, 2011

Laura Szendrei

The North Delta teen charged with first-degree murder in the beating death of 15-year-old Laura Szendrei will have his preliminary hearing next April and May in Surrey provincial court.

The hearing is set for 14 days, to begin April 10. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 27, for a pre-trial conference.

He remains in custody.

The accused was 17 years old when Szendrei was killed, so it is illegal to publish his name as the Youth Criminal Justice Act shields his identity.

Szendrei died in hospital on Sept. 26, a day after she was viciously beaten in broad daylight while walking along a path in the Mackie Park forest, in the 8200-block of 110th Street in North Delta.

The Crown plans to seek an adult sentence if the accused is found guilty.

That would work out to life without eligibility to apply for parole until 25 years are served. Under the YCJA, a first-degree murder conviction carries a sentence of 10 years, with six in custody.

Police have not released how Szendrei was killed. There's speculation a baseball bat was used but police have not confirmed this. There was no sign of sexual assault.
