Casey Anthony: the hair, the baseball tickets, the narcolepsy

Day three of jury selection in the Casey Anthony case told us more about the public — and about Casey’s hair.

The speakers on “In Session” were struck by several perspective jurors, notably the man with narcolepsy, the woman who goes to Mass every morning and the woman who hasn’t been away from her husband in more than 40 years.

The man with narcolepsy dozes off if he sits too long. And there was the man, a St. Petersburg city worker, who said he has baseball tickets to take grandma out to see the Milwaukee Brewers.

In noon newscasts, the topics ranged from Anthony’s look to the process in Clearwater. Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

WFTV-Channel 9’s Kathi Belich focused on Anthony’s hair. “She has a new hairdo, but her hair’s a mess,” Belich said. “Our legal analyst thinks she’s purposely trying to look sad.”

Belich offered more on the hair: “Casey Anthony has cut her hair. She now has long bangs and sometimes hides behind them.” (This is not an issue I can relate to.)

Belich noted that Anthony’s crying wasn’t as intense today but she shook her head more as the charges against her were read.

Central Florida News 13’s Adam Longo said today was “essentially a carbon copy” of Monday’s jury selection but that Anthony ”was able to hold her emotions a little more in check than on Monday.” News 13 anchor Jackie Brockington said the process “seemed to be taking a step backward.”

But WKMG-Channel 6’s Mike DeForest said the process was “going very, very smoothly.” Chief Judge Belvin Perry made sure to warn prospective jurors “early and warn them often that they are not to talk to absolutely anybody about Casey Anthony,” DeForest said.

WESH-Channel 2’s Bob Kealing recapped that Perry dismissed nearly 50 prospective jurors after some had been discussing the case. “By our unofficial count, around 130 prospective jurors have now been questioned over the last three days,” Kealing said. “Roughly 50 of them have been retained through this first round of questioning. That’s generally the number that Perry’s spokeswoman said they were looking to find.” But Kealing added that more complicated questioning about the death penalty will be in the next round.

DeForest put the count at 47 prospective jurors who could commit to the trial, which could run six to eight weeks.

Longo said eight of the people questioned this morning would return. And he added that 35 retained Monday and Tuesday would be asked this afternoon about the death penalty and Anthony.

One of the people dismissed this morning was the top lawyer with U.S. Central Command, Longo reported. “The judge dismissed him for reasons sensitive to national security,” Longo added.

Then there was the prospective juror who was held in contempt and fined $450 by Perry.

According to “In Session,” that prospective juror wanted out of jury duty and sought advice from an “In Session” field producer about how to do it.

Sunny Hostin “In Session” said the fine was harsh because the man works at Publix. But Casey Jordan sided with Perry for sending the message: “I’m the judge. You’re the prospective juror. You do exactly as I say.”
