Jacob Andrew Minton, who is accused of trying to kill his girlfriend's
2-year-old daughter at Brenner Children's Hospital
last weekend, was charged Thursday with 10 more counts of attempted
first-degree murder in the attack on the girl, bringing the total to 11.

Minton, 26, of 2750 Shingle Gap Road, Millers Creek, in Wilkes County, was also
charged with five counts of aggravated assault on a handicapped person
in the incident.

The girl, Maddison Long, was considered handicapped
because she was unconscious at the time, said Winston-Salem Police Capt.
David Clayton. He did not know if she was unconscious because of her
injuries or was in a medically induced coma. She was brought to the
hospital with a skull fracture and blood on her brain.

She was still in the hospital Thursday in stable condition.

Minton is accused of attacking the girl multiple times over about four hours
early Sunday morning. Police are not disclosing her mother's name.

According to warrants for his arrest, Minton slapped the girl's head, twisted her
foot and jabbed her stomach from 1:30 a.m. to 1:41 a.m. Sunday.

The warrants accuse him of pinching her nose and airway tube, preventing her
from breathing, around 1:40 a.m., and pinching her nose and airway
again at 3:01 a.m., 3:07 a.m., 3:10 a.m., 3:18 a.m., 3:33 a.m., 3:35 a.m. and 3:37 a.m.

The warrants accuse Minton of pressing her
abdominal area, twisting the fingers on her left hand, thumping her eyes
and back-hand slapping her head from 3:06 a.m. to 3:12 a.m.

The warrants also accuse Minton of leaning on her throat, preventing her from breathing, at 5:24 a.m.

Clayton declined to comment on whether the hospital had a videotape of the girl's room to come up with such specific times.

"We were able to document specifically, based on all the medical records,
and everything that was provided to us by Brenner Children's Hospital,"
Clayton said. "And also by our conducting interviews with both the
mother and with Minton himself."

The girl's mother has not been
charged. Clayton said investigators think the mother was asleep in the
room for at least part of the time during the attacks.

"We're just facing an uphill battle in the entire investigation when it comes to
talking about the mother's role," Clayton said. "And that's because of all the emotion involved."

The girl was flown to Brenner from Wilkes County early Sunday with a skull fracture and blood on her brain.
Minton was charged Sunday with one count of attempted first-degree murder.

Clayton said Wednesday that a machine monitoring the toddler's vital signs alerted hospital employees that something was wrong.
Minton is being held in the Forsyth County Jail with bond set at $1.6 million,
an increase over his initial $400,000 bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for April 15.
